I know he's a bigger name than the ones you mentioned obviously because he won the WBA title. I might as well say Calzaghe has the better resume still then.

I want them to fight but only because of the belts. I wouldn't assume Kessler as a favourite yet even though Beyer looks poor lately. Beyer will be his biggest name on Mikkel;s resume too.

Plus Beyer has more championship rounds and more experiance so he can make it competitive.

I'm not making excuses, Joe and Warren will go for what the casual fans will want and hardly any of them will have heard of Kessler. They've probably heard of Beyer more because of his fights with Woodhall and Catley.

What does the better resume have to do with it? Calzaghe has been a champion for 9 years to Kessler's 1 and a half of course its better. You can't even compare at this point.

The point is why does Calzaghe dismiss talk of Kessler as an opponent yet is happy to fight lesser fighters it doesn't make sense. Let's see who he fights in October as Johnson and Woods are not available, I'm betting its not the promised 'superfight'.

Because you brought up names thats why. You sure compare Kessler to Calzaghe's easy names and not the best names he's fought though.

Warren didn't seem to dismiss talks of Kessler on Ian's BBN article.

My point is not the names, but Calzaghe dismissed Kessler yet has fought far less known fighters so his argument that Kessler is not well known enough is absolute hogwash.

Only the Danish and the fans such as us on boxrec only care about wanting the match. Sure the casual fans will watch it and pay to see it, put Warren and Joe want the most marketable fighters.

Didn't look shot to me, more like shut out and busted up by the best kept secret in boxing (aside from Lorenzo Parra). Siaca was shut out out and beaten up, too, and he was good enough to beat Mundine and Byron Mitchell (officially he lost to BM, but under dodgy circumstances!).

Lucas has fought Roy Jones, Fabrice Tiozzo (good enough to beat down Mike McCallum), Glenn Catley, Danny Green, Marcus Beyer. And he said that after Jones, Kessler was the best he fought.
Because he could of put up a better fight than that against the way Kessler was fighting. Plus he's probably had some wear and tear from those loses too and like James said he had a long term Illness so that would have some affect.

Best Kept secret? He's only that way becasuse he hasn't got much market value outisde of Denmark and before Beyer than what was the point of overpricing himself?

Patience and a good jab? You need more than that against Calzaghe to be competitive.
Good points. Let's be realistic here, there are two sides to every argument. It's all well and good dissing Calzaghe for 'avoiding' Kessler, but consider also that Kessler's camp are only telling their side of the story.

allegedly stated that team Palle (I think that's his promoter) asked for ridiculous sums of money to fight Calzaghe. Now I know Lacy was very well paid, but Lacy was a big name big exposure fighter in the states, where there's a lot of boxing money. Whilst Kessler is popular in Denmark, there is nowhere near as much money in a fight between Calzaghe and Kessler, as there was for Calzaghe v Lacy, by my reckoning anyhow. How many PPV buys would they get in Denmark compared to the USA.

Kessler, despite the talk of confidence, surely knows that Calzaghe is by far the most dangerous opponent he could face. He is probably pretty confident about beating Beyer (maybe misplaced, perhaps Beyer is cute enough to to pull out a decision), but knows that Calzaghe is a different kettle of fish.

So why risk his massive following in Denmark, when he can unify against Kessler and rack up more defences? It's quite possible that Kessler's team will be happy to price him out of a fight with Calzaghe, and vice versa of course. It sucks that boxing is this way, but those are the realities of the business end of things.

Yes but are you not getting my point? Kessler is better known than other guys Calzaghe has fought yet they were acceptable. So why is he dismissed? I am not saying he is ducking him but he needs to fight him no idea why he keeps dismissing talk of it.

Because he might want someone who will bring more money to the table as I've said. Now that he whooped the tar out of Lacy, at least he's trying for good names now and not tomatoe cans as a substitute.

See my above post, they were accepted because their demands weren't excessive. At the end of the day, boxing is run by promoters who have to fund big showdowns out of their own pockets, with the help of TV money, it's a balancing act with risks and rewards. Fighting some putz who wants peanuts is a lot easier to arrange, than fighting a risk who wants paying handsomely. If there's not much in it for the promoter, and he stands to lose value on his asset, the chances are it won't happen, unless there is a big reward available to balance the risk.

It's a bit like your mate asking to borrow your 1988 fiat punto to go shopping in, chances are you'll say 'sure.'

Same guy asks to borrow your other car, the Mercedes SLK Sportline, and suddenly the proposition doesn't look so good.

His massive following Denmark...

The boxing is on a very small channel. If there are 100K viewers per card its a good card.

Kessler is not that know in Denmark. He has only fourght once of a big channel, vs Craig Cummings, all his other fights have been on either PPV on small-ish channels.

Parken will not even be close to be sold out, their are just having the card their since our best boxing facility can hold 7-8000. I think Team Palle should be thankfull if there will be 15K spectators. Allthough it has been mentioned in the press that only a small part of Parken will be used, so that their can only be 12K spectators

Economical this is both Kessler and Beyer's career high purses. Beyer is getting 1½mill Euro + german TV rights, while Kessler number havent been made public yet (I guess it depends on the danish PPV figures).

The card will be a co-promotion between Palle and Sauerland, so some of Sauerland's other fighters should also be on the card.

While a Kessler fight will not get Calzaghe as much £££££££ as perhaps Glen Johnson or someone the chance at becoming the undisputed champion at 168 surely offsets that? Too good an opportunity to miss. Its not like he needs the money desperately.

Lets see who he fights in October. I bet its not a big player.

Thanks for that Freiheit, the way team Palle talk, you would think he was a national hero in Denmark they are obviously trumping up his popularity.

Therefore if he isn't even that popular in denmark, why was he asking for more money than he had ever earnt before to fight Calzaghe? Didn't he ask for £1,000,000, (probably + danish TV rights) which is obviously a lot more than he's earnt before. Seeing as Beyer is only getting 1.5m EUROS and is definetly the better known of the two fighters.

It's not all down to Joe though, do you think allegedly is going to just say, sure Joe let's take a pay cut, and pay Kessler what he wants, if you did lose, no big deal, you've had a good career?

Whatever it takes Calzaghe should fight the winner.

Some of the monentum he gained beating Lacy has been lost already with the farce with his July fight, winning the undisputed title at 168 is the way forward.

I'd much rather Calzaghe unifies this weight than fight Glen Johnson seriously.

Johnson is having a bit of a renaissance but thats as much to do with 175 being piss poor as him being markedly better than he was earlier in his career. Of course he has improved, but elite competitor he is not. Hopkins showed just what level Tarver/Johson are at.

Though Kessler has the style that would suggest a long career / long title reign would be very possible, he has suffered injuries & I believe he wants to get the biggest fights while they are there, and while he is physically good to take these fights. He has showed urgency, trying to get Lacy when Calzaghe pulled out of the Lacy fight for their initially sheduled meeting. He went to Mundine's backyard to make his first title defense, and was going to do so again before the Beyer fight was finalised.

Hopkins is an all time great though, so I would dispute whether that makes Johnson sub-elite level.

Johnson reminds me of old timers like Bennie Briscoe, mixed in good company, lost a lot of times against generally good fighters, got jobbed a few times, difference is, in this era, Johnson was able to get a title shot due to all the belts eventually.

Johnson is not an elite level fighter, never. A good contender yes but not elite level. 175 has been piss poor for a long time.

No disrespect to Woods, although a world champion is about a European title level operator. Johnson and him are on a par pretty much.

EDIT - let me clarify what I mean is Woods would have been Euro level a few years back and nothing more. In this day and age its a lot easier to make it on the world scene.

Interesting. Out of curiousity, how highly do you rate Kessler, Freiheit? I'm guessing you've seen a hell of a lot more of him than anyone else on this board.

Calzaghe took a paycut to give Lacy a whooping, he could do it for Mikkel but fighters are not willing to do that everytime they want the best opposition.

Of course he has. The farce with his July opponent followed by pulling out the day after the Johnson fight was agreed has definitely lost some of the momentum from the Lacy fight.
