He’s a tough guy. Don’t like the odds of Beter KOing him, but he might bust up Joe enough for the official to step in and waive it off. Joey’s only chance is a war. He’s got to come in and trade punches. He’ll never outbox Beter.

Hard to imagine anyone who is a good matchup for Beter. I love this fight. Joe is a sizeable underdog I agree but at least he’s got the old puncher’s chance.DrDuke wrote: ↑20 Mar 2021, 13:41That's right, but I can't imagine him outfighting Beter, who is damn powerful and can methodically deliver his brute force. This matchup is all wrong for Smith.bobcatbox wrote: ↑20 Mar 2021, 13:10 Smith’s only knockout loss came to this guy early in his career: https://boxrec.com/en/proboxer/386798

Arum: Beterbiev-Smith Could Go Either Way; Whoever Wins, It’s Gonna Be Entertaining
Now that Artur Beterbiev has handled Adam Deines, Bob Arum is halfway toward making the light heavyweight title unification fight that the promoter can’t wait to put together.
If Joe Smith beats Maxim Vlasov on April 10, Arum’s company can begin working on a deal for Beterbiev and Smith to meet sometime later this year. Arum has told BS.com and other outlets that he would like to bring that intriguing 175-pound title fight to Madison Square Garden once COVID-19 protocols will allow a substantial amount of fans to attend.
“That’s the type of fight that a promoter wants to put together,” Arum told Boxing Scene. “With all-action fighters, nobody knows who’s gonna win. I mean, it could go either way. You can argue either way on the fight. But whoever wins, it’s gonna be entertaining. I wanna do fights like [Oscar] Valdez and [Miguel] Berchelt, a terrific fight. Joe Smith and Beterbiev is the kinda fight we wanna do.”
Russia’s Beterbiev basically beat up Germany’s Deines for nine-plus rounds Saturday night at Megasport Sport Palace in Moscow. Their scheduled 12-rounder was stopped in the 10th round, after Beterbiev’s left hook sent Deines to the canvas for the second time in their fight.
Beterbiev (16-0, 16 KOs) first floored Deines (19-2-1, 10 KOs) with a right hand that grazed the top of Deines’ head late in the first round.
The 36-year-old Beterbiev, who is co-promoted by Arum’s Top Rank Inc., retained his IBF and WBC light heavyweight titles.
The 31-year-old Smith (26-3, 21 KOs), of Mastic, New York, and Vlasov (45-3, 26 KOs), of Samara, Russia, will fight for the vacant WBO belt April 10 at Osage Casino Hotel in Tulsa, Oklahoma (ESPN). They were scheduled to fight February 13 at MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas, but Vlasov tested positive for COVID-19 during fight week and was forced to withdraw February 11.
Arum anticipates another impressive victory from Smith, who knocked out former WBO champ Eleider Alvarez (25-2, 13 KOs) in the ninth round of his last fight, August 22 at MGM Grand Conference Center.
“He has learned how to box, to go with his power,” Arum said. “And therefore, he’s very, very dangerous because you can see he’s setting up his punches better, he’s moving better. He’s becoming a complete fighter. And to have a homegrown, working-class guy competing at this level is something special.”

Re: Artur Beterbiev vs. Joe Smith - TBA
as i said in another thread, if smith-salamov happens next like i expect, they should make smith-salamov and bert-vlasov, then have the winners faceoff
i doubt smith won too many believers the other night, but worth noting that vlasov is totally different stylistically than berterbiev and moves his head much more. bert obviously has the major firepower but is also more there to be hit. with smiths power and chin joe is a dangerous one for sure

Re: Artur Beterbiev vs. Joe Smith - TBA
Joe definitely an even bigger underdog after squeaking one out against Vlasov that arguably was the wrong result. I’m still pulling for the guy though. How does smith win this fight?
Idk if he can actually knock out Beterbiev. But a decision seems even less likely. So I’m going with Joey by KO in the 7th. He’ll need to catch Artur early enough before he gassed out. And it will take more than one I think to put Beterbiev down.

Re: Artur Beterbiev vs. Joe Smith - TBA
he wins by drawing bert into a slugfest. look how wild bert was vs callum johnson when he got dropped and in many of his previous fights. he used to fight like a crazy man
he has settled down in his last few performances, but if it turns into a slugout then joe has a legit shot of knocking him out
bert is superior to vlasov but his style works better for joe, that's how you can end up with cases where a guy does better than you'd expect just going by the level of the opponent

Re: Artur Beterbiev vs. Joe Smith - TBA
i dunno my man, bert is right in front of opponents and unlike vlasov, who constantly moved his head, bert's head is a static target. vlasov also scored mainly with long straight shots, but bert is several inches shorter than vlas and is more a short punch guy.
although bert is better than vlasov, i think styles help smith be in with a live shot against him. smith has power and a good chin, and that can go far vs an opponent who is in front of him trading punches. bert has been wild and caught and dropped before, if he engages in a fire fight as hes done in the past he could be surprised
joe smith has scored had least 4 upsets (alvarez, fonfara, hopkins, hart), so he's used to winning when people doubt him

Re: Artur Beterbiev vs. Joe Smith - TBA
I thought Joe Smith Jr. just about deserved to gain the nod over Maxim Vlasov, but the outcome could have gone either way.
And I did say that Smith Jr. beating Vlasov would be a phenomenal recovery for Joe from the Bivol loss.
I don't know about you guys, but I always thought Maxim Vlasov was a very decent operator - a good fighter.
I was more impressed about Smith Jr's performance against Vlasov than Beterbiev's against Deines.
Artur under-performed during most recent outing. And he even said it himself, he looked "bad".
That's not to say I don't consider Beterbiev as being the betting favourite; it's just that I reckon Joe Smith Jr. has an excellent chance of scoring the upset over the inactive heavily-hyped Russian.

Should be a good action fight however it goes. Both are tough, aggressive guys.

Artur Beterbiev Hopes To Finalize Joe Smith Unification in Coming Days
WBC and IBF light heavyweight world champion Artur Beterbiev of Russia is expecting the contract for his fight with WBO beltholder Joe Smith to be signed in the coming days.
World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman was notified that their highly anticipated light heavyweight unification is scheduled for September 18 in New York.
Beterbiev, who wants to unify the entire weight class, is very motivated to capture another world title.
"The fight with Smith on September 18 has not yet been confirmed. I'm waiting for the contract. I think that issue will be resolved in the coming days. Of course I would like to have this fight, because after all Smith has the belt. In general, I don't care who I go up against. The main thing is to win the belt," said Beterbiev to Ildar Satdinov.
Smith looked less than spectacular in his last fight back in April, when he secured a twelve round majority decision over Maxim Vlasov to capture the WBO title.
Beterbiev is certainly not overlooking Smith's abilities in the ring.
"I don't have the thought process that Smith has no chance in a fight with me. Any boxer has a chance of winning. Smith is not an ordinary fighter, he is experienced, he boxed with strong opponents, showed good boxing," Beterbiev said.
For his part, Beterbiev saw action back in March. At the Ice Palace in Moscow, he put away German contender Adam Dienes in the tenth round of action.
Beterbiev has a perfect record with 16 wins and all of them have come inside the distance. On the account of Smith, there are 27 wins (21 of them by way of knockout) with three defeats.
