Porter on Facing Conor Benn: I Don't Think There's Much To Gain For Me
Former two-time welterweight champion Shawn Porter has issued a warning to rising contender, Conor Benn.
Last Saturday night, Benn (18-0) stopped the usually durable Samuel Vargas in a single round.
After the fight, the unbeaten boxer called out several names - including Amir Khan, Kell Brook - and Porter.
Porter firmly believes that Benn will not be able to blow through the top names at 147 like he blew through Vargas.
He feels the budding star is getting way too ahead of himself.
"When you're getting in the ring and you're blazing through guys, in a round or two, it's great," Porter told the Toe To Toe Podcast on Sky Sports.
"It looks phenomenal, but you really don't know. You can use that and say, 'I'm just going to blow through those guys', but nobody blows through Shawn Porter, nobody blows through Kell Brook, nobody blows through Errol Spence Jr. When that doesn't happen, you need to know that you've got some other tools in your tool box, and you can go to those things to weather whatever storm that we're going to bring you.
"That's what I say when Nigel Benn says, 'my son is ready for Shawn Porter, my son is ready for world championship contention'. Has he been through things yet in the ring, if he hasn't grown enough yet in the boxing ring as a professional? He certainly did not do it as an amateur, like Vergil Ortiz, Jaron Ennis. Those guys have been through the amateur program, they know all about it. It's only a matter of time before they get to the big time."
Porter is focused on securing the biggest names in the weight class - and he doesn't see any particular reason to get in the ring with the 24-year-old Benn.
"There really isn't [a reason.] I don't think there's much to gain for me," said Porter.
"Right here in this particular situation, something that not many people understand, especially the fighters, they don't really understand the business of boxing. The business of boxing says eight years at world championship level contention does not get in the ring with five years of boxing professionally. There's no comparison there. If the phone were to ring. I don't foresee it happening, but if it were to ring, we would kind of lean with that right there."

Re: Porter on Facing Conor Benn: I Don't Think There's Much To Gain For Me
Does anybody remember when Porter "blew through" the "usually durable" Paulie Mallignaggi like he was nothing? I remember thinking he looked like an absolute beast. He seems to go points a lot these days, doesn't he? Regardless, He's kind of an odd person for Benn to call out. Porter's durable as anything and runs elite fighters close even in losing.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑15 Apr 2021, 06:20 Porter on Facing Conor Benn: I Don't Think There's Much To Gain For Me

I don't think Benn has any real intention of fighting him at the moment.
Re: Porter on Facing Conor Benn: I Don't Think There's Much To Gain For Me
porter talks sense. he has done it all, and bar crawford, has been inwith every top welter in the world. he's always in close fights and is a top 3 welter in my opinion.
benn has done nothing and beaten nobody compared to what porter has achieved....the two shouldnt even be mentionned in the same sentence really.

Benn should fight at British level before anything.

Re: Porter on Facing Conor Benn: I Don't Think There's Much To Gain For Me
This is the problem with the modern game, fighters fast tracked to the top with quick wins without any real experience. Too much emphasis on undefeated records. Nigel Benn learnt the hard way, blazed his way through a load of Mexican roadsweepers as he called them and when he faced his first true challenge lost. His style changed as his career went on and he boxed more than rather than rushing in like a mad man. Thats what experience teaches.
I can see that Edgar Berlanga falling into the 'I can knock everyone out' trap, he will end up getting stopped and then he will learn from it.

Re: Porter on Facing Conor Benn: I Don't Think There's Much To Gain For Me
Conor is no Nigel. People were weighing up Benn’s chances vs Middle king Frank Tate in 1987 months after turning over! There was huge talk of Hearns and Nunn in mid-88, little over one year as a pro.
He was that good. That hot. That hard hitting.
Conor is slow burning because he wasn’t anything special - his dad clearly was.

Re: Porter on Facing Conor Benn: I Don't Think There's Much To Gain For Me
The only reason that Benn isn't facing Porter next is because Hearn isn't paying Porter the big bucks to come over and demolish his temporary cash cow. If Hearn believed Benn was that good he would be trying to make those fights as soon as possible like he did with Joshua/Taylor/Okolie etc instead of comparing Benn to Porter while suggesting the likes of Khan as an opponent.
Re: Porter on Facing Conor Benn: I Don't Think There's Much To Gain For Me
Don't believe for one minuite Conor wants them ,,, he's called out who he's told to call out , and funny enough i think he's actually cocky enough to believe he'll beat them ... But there not stupid , just like Conor says bla , bla is a backward step , Hearn knows Conor will get the same answer ,, except for naybee Khan ,, This is a fight i believe Hearn would take , knowing if Conor jumps him and manages to crack him early he just might pull it off ,, If he doe'snt he can say its a good learning fight for Conor .
Whats next for Conor simple , Khan or another Vargas type .

McGuigan matched Taylor. Did a near perfect job. He's had less fights than Conor! Except his 100+ top level, international and Olympic amateur career.....joshj909 wrote: ↑15 Apr 2021, 08:07 The only reason that Benn isn't facing Porter next is because Hearn isn't paying Porter the big bucks to come over and demolish his temporary cash cow. To get Benn to a world title fight its not who he fights it's who he doesn't fight. Porter would outbox him.

It’s a scandal and embarrassing that Benn’s name is getting linked with Shawn Porter.
Re: Porter on Facing Conor Benn: I Don't Think There's Much To Gain For Me
No way Benn fights Porter. His team and Eddie know he would get battered.

Yeah absolutely. I’ve nout against Conor but I’m sick to the back teeth of Eddie and his PPV policy and we know that Conor will knock over a couple more very carefully chosen opponents before Eddie try’s to put him on PPV. The Porter fight won’t happen but it would be wonderful to see a class act time served world class operator like Porter put a huge spanner in the works

YES ABSOLUTLY
Don't even think its gonna take a world class operater, too put a spanner in the works , just someone who has a decent dig who comes to win ,,, You can't help but notice the big improvement in Benn from start to now ,, but improve he should , he's been fed with a silver spoon , good trainer , hand picked opponents , matchroom bankrolling him , while others have to work , deal with covid and train , he's not , had to worry about these things .... he's traded a long way of his dads name .
Unfortunate thing is now he's believing his own publicity , what did he say after the last handpicked win , I was learning but now i'm there ,, Bring hm a tough Aussie , Micheal Zarafa will do ,, see how he goes when its not a powderpuff puncher in front of him , but a guy with a dig limited skills but a big heart , someone like himself , ,,, Or stuff it ,, pay Brooks the money , or Porter , put an end to it and just shout Next ,, get the hype machine rolling for someone else .
i'M WITH YOU , i' love to watch someone evolve and improve , and go on the journey with them , become a fan ,, but theres a fine line between confidence , and cockiness , and i think Connor has found it and started to believe his own publicity,,, he really is bodering on the cocky side , not relizing at the moment he's a koala , ((protected species ) , but realisticly he's been going for what 5- 6 years now had 18 fights all wins , its time to let him off the leash and play with the big dogs , so Cmon Eddie put the money up grab Porter or Brook , and lets see what he's got ,, win win , if he loses blame it on a learning fight ans start looking to back another horse for the future PPV star , if he wins , Bingo you got your star
Re: Porter on Facing Conor Benn: I Don't Think There's Much To Gain For Me
I meant Katie Taylor but Josh Taylor's matchmaking is also matchmaking for a guy you have confidence in. Benn's is not.mickey1975 wrote: ↑15 Apr 2021, 10:54McGuigan matched Taylor. well spen oliver says benn takes down crawford and spence, so i doubt porter would be a challenge at all
fact is, when you beat sam vargas, you've earned a spot among the elite

Good luck to Conor but honestly, putting him in with a top welterweight like Porter would probably end up going like Pele Reid vs Julius Francis.
