it's amazing how many fights you can see where Arguello's opponent visibly crumbles like that, you can see the fight drain out of them

Yeah, Arguello was a monster. A composed hard-hitting boxer with a variety of punches in his arsenal.

Close and competitive fight. Duran showed flashes of brilliance but he was way past his best.
Sims showed he had heart but not the quality of his brother.

Great show. Hearns and Graham on the bill and the fight before was McGuigan-Cruz.
I loved that show!

DeLeon stops Spinks after 6 rounds of a non title Cruiserweight fight, another fast start from Spinks, no problem backing DeLeon up and battering away to head and body, DeLeon too passive early on but around the 5th he turned the tables hitting and hurting Spinks with sharp jabs and quickfire combinations, Spinks was busted up and after 6 rounds he was retired on his stool
I saw this fight recently too!

Alexis Arguello vs Rafael Limon

A bloody slugfest. The fight started with both fighters bringing it on. There were some unintentional head clashes, which caused cuts on Limon's face, all were missed by the referee Tony Perez. The fight was quite even at the start, but gradually Arguello took over. In the 11th round the bout was stopped due to cuts on Limon's face. Limon appeared to be a very tough fella. He was bleeding a lot, he was taking tons of punishment, but he was standing his ground.

Michael Spinks vs Yaqui Lopez

Spinks stops Lopez in the 7th round of a non title Light Heavyweight contest, Lopez came out banging to the body, really putting it on Spinks who was trying to establish his jab, great action, it took Spinks a few rounds to figure Lopez out, even by the 5th when Spinks was getting on top Lopez was always dangerous, in his face throwing leather

There were signs in the 6th Lopez was starting to unravel but as i say still kept slugging, in the 7th Spinks rocked Lopez with some rights then dropped him heavily with a left hook, Lopez got up and tried to duke it out but a Spinks combination dropped him a second time and it was waved off

I remember watching this one when it happened. There were so many fun fights in that division around that time.

Alexis Arguello vs Cornelius Boza-Edwards

A good scrap. The fight started close and both had their moments, Boza even rocked Arguello with a left hand in the 3rd. Yet Arguello was gradually outboxing Boza and breaking him down. In the 7th Boza was hurt badly, in the 8th even worse. After that round Boza was saved by his corner.

I remember from also watching on youtube that Limon was quite angry after the stoppage!

I've heard some fans-usually hard-core Sanchez fans-say Gomez had no heart and only got up because he didnt have a choice!! That's a load of crap, and that's when I knew those fans did not know anything about boxing ..lol Most Mexican fans-those who do know which is the vast majority about 99 percent of them always tell me that Gomez was a warrior...

Sandy Saddler vs Willie Pep 4

An (in)famously dirty fight. Pep actually looked good early on and I see him winning at the early stages. However, Saddler was making it dirty and Pep was accepting this, which was a mistake. Pep shoud have boxed instead of all that wrestling, holding-and-hitting. Well, probably Pep also was affected by the cut. Anyway, by the mid-rounds Saddler began to look better, he received the dividends from the dirty display. After the 9th the frustrated Pep retired due to the cut. Thus Saddler went 3-1 in the rivalry, which he should have lost. Sometimes the better fighters lose.

Michael Spinks vs Marvin Johnson

Spinks KOs Johnson in the 4th of a non title 175 fight, quick start from Johnson backing Spinks up with the southpaw jab, landing the left hand, he was able to counter Spinks as well and arguably won the first 3 rounds, Spinks was showing glimpses by the 3rd, countering with the jab over Johnson's own jab, the ending in the 4th however came out of nowhere, a left uppercut from Spinks had Johnson flat on his back out cold, stunning KO

Eusebio Pedroza vs Ruben Olivares

A great fight. Olivares was an aggressor early on, but Pedroza was slicker and faster. Olivares had Pedroza on the ropes on several occasions, but Pedroza felt comfortable there and he was outfighting Olivares. With the progress of the fight Pedroza became more aggressive, there were more brawls closer to the center of the ring. Pedroza was getting better of the most of the exchanges. In the 12th Olivares was taking a lot of punishment, his corner threw in the towel at the same moment when Olivares fell down from the barrage of punches.

You know Gomez was never the same when he moved up from 122 pounds. He was the absolute king at super bantamweight. When he became a featherweight and junior lightweight he lost something. He was to me pound for pound one of the best.

Alexis Arguello vs Jim Watt

A solid tactical affair. Arguello methodically outboxed Watt. Arguello dropped Watt in the 7th with a lead left hook of the left - right combo and barely gave away a round. Watt was tough, as he lasted for all 15 rounds and took a lot of punishment well, despite having his face busted up. Arguello became a LW champion.

Arguello was in another league over Watt and Mancini. He was an all time legendary great and Mancini and Watt were tough warrior with hearts of a lion but not with great overall skills.

That's right, however, Mancini gace Arguello a much tougher fight than Watts. I watched the Mancini bout now as well. It was even for the 2/3 of the distance, but then Arguello prevailed. Mancini was explosive and sharp, but Arguello was more durable, precise and composed. At the end of the 12th Alexis scored a perfect counter one-two on Ray sending him down. In the 14th round Mancini took a series of hard blows and went down, while the fight was finally stopped. Arguello masterfully stayed cool and outfought the strong banger.

Arguello took Mancini to school. His experience and overall superior skills proved too much especially going into the championship rounds. Mancini was 20 years of age at the time. He hung in there and prevailed and became a World Champion several months later.

Alexis Arguello vs Roberto Elizondo

Elizondo tried hard to pressure Arguello and to outfight him, but Arguello was outboxing Elizondo. Although in the 3rd round Elizondo trapped Arguello on the ropes with a solid scored combo. Yet it was both good and bad for Elizondo, because, when he tried the same stuff in the 4th round, Arguello scored a series off the ropes and knocked Elizondo down. In the next rounds Arguello's dominance was even more clear and in the 7th Alexis finally stopped Roberto.

Alexis Arguello vs Bubba Busceme

Arguello outboxed and battered Bubba in front of the pro-Busceme crowd. Bubba had his moments, but he still wasn't able to provide any real threat for Arguello. In the 6th round Alexis unleashed a barrage of punches on Busceme, where left hooks and right hands were crucial. Bubba was wobbled, he turned his back and got waved by the ref.

Alexis Arguello vs Andy Ganigan

A great brawl. The southpaw Ganigan started strong. At the end of the 1st round he provided a combo on Arguello and Alexis did a mistake with going straight backwards, as the ropes stopped him and he wasn't able to dodge the left hand of the Ganigan's combination. Arguello was down from that left hand, but he wasn't bothered much, he got up and remained cool. Arguello started to take over. In the 3rd already Ganigan was down, from Arguello right hand, but Andy still had his moments later in the round. At the bell of the 5th Arguello unleashed a barrage of hard shots up- and downstairs, Ganigan was down and counted out.

Alexis Arguello vs Kevin Rooney

Arguello destroyed the white mini-version of Floyd Patterson (and proto-version of Mike Tyson) in two rounds. Rooney came as a classic peek-a-boo aggressor, what was a gift for the composted and faster fighter in Arguello.

Aaron Pryor vs Alexis Arguello I

A great fight, but also a sad one, acknowledging that the classy fighter lost to a cheater. Actually, I don't pay much attention to regular PED cases, I'm pretty sure, that all pro-athletes juice up it during their camps, but to give a fighter some sort of an energizer between rounds is over the top. Furthermore, people majorly seem to notice "the mixed bottle" only before the 14th round, but the same phrase was heard before the 3rd one, while exactly that bottle can also be seen used before some other rounds. So, Pryor was constantly being reinforced during that bout. Also, Arguello was landing the biggest punches of the fight frequently, including his devastating right hands, which floored and KOed many fighters, even right in his previous bout against Rooney, but Pryor was taking everything like a robot.

One thing: I wonder if Pryor have a choice.....Panama Lewis was an evil man.

Also, Pryor won the rematch too, BUT I have to say by then the scandal had worn Alexis down psychologically.

Great women's fight...Ward could have arguably been DQ'd in the third though...
