Jake Paul: I Have Early Signs Of CTE, My Brain Is On The Line For Boxing

Gen Z and the boxing public alike are used to Jake Paul dishing out headline-grabbing material.

His latest exposé ahead of his third professional boxing match Saturday night versus Ben Askren on Triller pay-per-view was a startling proclamation relating to his mental health.

“You know, it’s a dangerous sport. And that’s why, when people question my dedication to it, it’s like, I’m showing up every single day. I’m putting my mental health on the line, my brain is on the line … I’ve gone and gotten brain scans and have early signs of CTE,” Paul said during a press conference Thursday. “But, I love this sport and wouldn’t trade it for anything else. And I’m a fighter and people will see that. Whether it’s after Saturday night or whether it’s a year from now, they will see that I’m a fighter.”

Actively competing in combat sports with signs of CTE is certainly an issue that Paul should be taking seriously. The 24-year-old content creator turned KO artist did expand much further on the subject of CTE.

However, Paul did continue ramping up the promotion of his main event fight with the former MMA champion Askren.

Paul even compared his ascent in boxing to be far greater than the recently anointed fighter of the decade.

"I'm in my third pro fight, I'm fighting eight rounds, headlining one of the biggest pay-per-views that could happen this decade," Paul said. "If you look at Floyd Mayweather, his third fight was six rounds, he got paid $7,000 and I don't think anyone in this room probably watched it."

Regis Prograis (25-1, 21 KOs) will make $850,000, while opponent Ivan Redkach (23-5-1, 18 KOs) will take home $250,000.

Jake Paul (2-0, 2 KOs) will make $690,000, but will increase significantly depending on PPV buys. Ben Askren (19-2 MMA), will earn $500,000.

Frank Mir (19-13 MMA) will make $350,000 in his pro boxing debut. Steve Cunningham (29-9-1, 13 KOs) will earn $150,000 for his first fight in four years.

Colombian reggaeton artist Reykon is making his pro boxing debut will get $80,000. Joe Fournier (8-0, 8 KOs), who will return after a four year layoff will make $220,000.

That’s a good point. But I just see Paul bouncing hard, accurate shots off Askren’s big head and just overwhelming him. It’s not like Ben’s going to be moving much with his hip. It’ll be a massacre in my opinion. Askren is basically retired and can’t turn down half a mill. He may lose a little dignity but in the end he won’t be remembered for this. He has plenty of excuses he can make afterwards.

Slow twitch is exactly it. Paul starts fast though which is why I can see Askren’s head getting pummelled with hard shots and getting put over spectacularly. People talk about his chin, but in the first round fighters can be vulnerable. I think he’s gonna get bombed out in 1-2 rounds.

You better hope so. Askrin took a massive amount of shots from Robbie Lawler, a bonafide elite-level puncher, in the opening of their fight, and still went on to stop Robbie later that round by submission. You're pretty ballsy to bet on this. Paul is too much of an unknown. But we do know that Askrin is a world-class competitor. I have no idea who is going to win this.
