I gotta go Olivares. even though he was past-peak he still had enough to TKO Chacon a year later. looking at the alternatives, I guess Escalera and Mancini would be the first two that come to mind, Escalera's record doesn't overly impress me (though I'm open to arguments on that one) and Mancini, well I happen to think the version of Mancini that fought Arguello was the best I ever saw in the ring, I don't think I ever saw him move his head and use feint as he did in the early-middle rounds against Alexis. Still, Mancini/Olivares Mancini/Olivares? I'll go with Ruben.

I am glad to see Arguello getting some attention here. He was always a class guy and a top 25 pound for pound boxer of all time. He was outstanding. It is too bad he died so young. Yes. i believe that Mancini did give him a tough time but was overmatched and outclassed by the great Alexis. Arguello was too experienced for a 20 year old Mancini. Mancini gave it his all but came up short. Arguello took total command in the championship rounds and took Ray to school.

I picked Olivares because Ruben was a legend, but the Mancini fight was the most important for gaining him wider support/acknowledgement in the US market because it was on national TV and they did a ton of pieces on Mancini's personal story about his dad being a fighter who missed out on a title shot because of WWII. Real heartstrings stuff. Arguello had been on US TV many times before and beat better opponents, but that was a big fight for gaining him recognition beyond the diehard fight fans, IMO

If to rank his top 10 wins I'll go this way:

1. Ruben Olivares. The first World championship win and it's against such accomplished operator in a so hard-fought affair.
2. Ray Mancini. A great fight against a rising contender, who still would come on top in future.
3. Bobby Chacon. Another highly accomplished competitor.
4. Alfredo Escalera 1. Dethroning Escalera for the SFW championship after a great reign.
5. Alfredo Escalera 2. Repeating the 1st fight in a more brutal fashion.
6. Jose Luis Ramirez. A tough fight, another win over a competitor with a future.
7. Jim Watt. Outclassed Watt after a solid reign, conquered the 3rd division.
8. Cornelius Boza Edwards. Yet another win over a rising fighter with a future.
9. Rafael Limon. A tough competitor of his era.
10. Vilomar Fernandez. An avenged loss over a stylistically bad fighter for Arguello to be matched against.

WTKO13 Ruben Olivares. It was a war of attrition. He was behind on points. And a star was born.

The great Alexis Arguello's finest hour. After that, he won 19 consecutive world title fights in 3 weight classes.

He never lost his belts while being champion.

I'd rank Olivares as the best fighter Arguello ever beat, by far; so, that fight is my choice. The list of guys Arguello stopped is fantastic ! What a great fighter he was.
