Rocky Balboa looks good shocker
Yeah he was.... he should be going for more character driven roles like that. The original Rocky films had very strong characterization... the main problem with those films is that after Rocky 2 they basically follow the same plotline... Rocky faces mayjor challenge--- comes close to giving in--- then knuckles down to superior training---- comes through brutal fight to win....KOJOE90 wrote:Stallone was very good in Copland.
Silkov, thats why I thought Rocky V was good - it was back to the characterisation more. Rocky struggling to come to terms with losing his money and dignity - thats why I stated that I thought Stallone did a good job. I hope the 6th one is similar, it sounds fairly promising especially early on from what the synopsis is.
I agree he was good in Copland although maybe over played it a tad early on. He was supposed to be deaf, but when it started off I thought he had some pretty major mental disabilities - just was giving me the impression that he was playing it like he was backward, not just deaf.
If you have seen the Stallone biography on the biography channel, then it will say there that a regular pattern of his is too get a Rocky and a Rambo (and its often been Rocky, followed by Rambo) out when his career is struggling. He was saying no more Rocky's after the third one.
His career struggled between Rocky 1 and Rocky 2 (he was exceptional in F.I.S.T in this interim mind) and generally between all the Rocky's. But the Rocky/Rambo saga seems to get him back in demand enough for him to have one other box office success film between them - before struggling.
The odd one out is Rocky 5 which didn't do great, but Stallone had a fair few big films out after that. The likes of Cliff Hanger, Demonlition Man, Judge Dred, The Specialist etc.
Obviously high time now though to do the old trick again.

There were some good things in Rocky 5 but a lot of it was a bit too corny, especially the showdown between Rocky and whats his name!.
I really would have liked to see a Rocky where Stallone is the trainer given a chance to redeem himself by taking a fighter to the title... the idea of his fighting again in 6 is just too farfetched for me... thats why I dont think that this will be a hit either, because like Rocky 5 it just stretches the boundaries of credibility too far...

Yes, I do agree - although probably winning in a street fight is more realistic than winning under queensbury rules (its actually moves illegal in boxing that got him the edge).silkov wrote:There were some good things in Rocky 5 but a lot of it was a bit too corny, especially the showdown between Rocky and whats his name!.

Stu, that's not quite how I read that film. For one think his character was partially deaf, not deaf. Also I thought what Stallone was trying to put across with that character was that due to his disability he lacked a lot of confidence in himself and his ability to comunicate with others in a social or professional enviroment.stujones wrote:I agree he was good in Copland although maybe over played it a tad early on. I thought he managed to portray that quite well.
Its far fetched but personally I don't blame the guy. Nobody is forced to see films they don't want to, and its not as if Stallone's the only one flogging a dead horse. We've just had X-Men 3, no doubt there's more of those in the pipeline, in fact any successful Hollywood film seems to spawn sequels, even crappy comedies like Big Momma's House and Cheaper by the Dozen. Clint Eastwood must have done more Dirty Harry films than Stallone's done Rocky films, the difference being the Dirty Harry films didn't have sequential titles.
The Rocky franchise is known throughout the world and this new one has been done on a modest budget so it need not break records in order to turn a respectable profit. Good luck to him, from the looks of the advert he's not above poking fun at his age and the general implausibility of the central concept of the story, eg, when Burt Young (Paulie) asks him if he thinks he's yet to peak, and the advert's closing dialogue between Tarver and Balboa. In fact, credit where its due - the idea of a computer fight between Balboa at his best, and the new kid on the block, creating public interest in a fight between them, is quite an interesting one. We'll see.
I read somewhere that Foreman's title win over Moorer inspired Stallone to make another Rocky movie, even though George was considerably younger at 45. Let's just hope that life doesn't imitate art, we don't want George, Larry, Ernie or Ken making comebacks

Sorry partially deaf.... yes, I can how you read it. However, I thought how can someone who has been in his job for so long and considered a good cop depite his disability lack confidence in the proffesional enviroment? If he was an inexperienced young cop then fair comment. He was coping with his dissability well and really should have got back to the swing of things.KOJOE90 wrote:Stu, that's not quite how I read that film. Social enviroment is a different kettle of fish and one would expect him to lack confidence. Obviously, if thats how he intended to potray it as - then he did a good job, but I think it was a fault of the directors - cause I failed to see why he would lack the confidence. Thats why in the begining I thought "he's not all there" but then thinking "but he is a good cop, he should be intelligent".

I agree, I think he tried to get across the fact that some people treated him as if he was stupid because of his deafness.
I think this had a resonance for Stallone as he was looked at that way quite a bit when he was young because of his slight speech impediment...
For those curious about how this latest film ends... don't worry I won't spoil it but I just spent five minutes trying to find out; Stallone has filmed three endings (he is a pretty successful director, and has directed this film), a victory, a loss and the death of Balboa, and apparently he's already ruled out the latter. It will probably be included as a DVD extra.
I suppose by filming three outcomes the studio can keep people guessing between now and xmas, when the film is released. Films can be knackered before release if too much info gets spread among fans on the internet before the release (the most crucial info being that the film is shit, of course).
Judging by the number of posts about Rocky Balbao on the Internet Movie Database over the past few days (since the trailer was released), there is quite a bit of interest in this latest instalment.

And we wonder why Tarver was so poor against Hopkins???.... obviously Rocky softened him up!!....lvlarc_uk wrote:Let me guess, Rocky gets knocked down in 1st, chances look shady, gets battered untill his miraculous heroic comeback in the 12th ends in a double knockdown, Rocky gets up at 9.9 with Tarver still stretched out on cavas, Rocky lives to fight another day and crowd all go home happy.
Anyone notice that in the clips of the trailer where they hype up Tarver's character - showing him attacking someone, I'm sure that is Stallone he is beating up.
They probably couldn't get any real footage of him being that aggressive.
I've heard the draw option is one of the endings mentioned and he has filmed several (I heard 5 altogether). Fair play they're doing a fine job conceling it - I did a 5 minute search also but no-one is letting on. I thought surely someone would describe the ending they saw filmed.
I think there was a death scene filmed as a possibility in Rocky 5 also.

Where I live it will practically be on DVD before it comes to the Cinema - so I will no doubt no the ending before I see it anyway. Thats part of the reason.nickd wrote:Why would you search for the ending befor seeing it?
The second reason is cause I'm always like that.... I often want to whats going to happen before I see it. I can never stop myself from looking at Teletext with a Sunday Morning delayed Sky show. Even though I know it is the most realistic ending, I don't think I would watch it if I knew Rocky dies in it.
I think its because I absolutely cacked myself when I saw Jaws for the first time as a kid.
I blooming still have to leave the room when the fisherman starts singing "Show me the way to go home" I'm thinking... not long now till your fish food.nickd wrote:Is there anyone who didn't?stujones wrote: I think its because I absolutely cacked myself when I saw Jaws for the first time as a kid.
Now I don't mind the blood and guts or I'm a soppy bar steward, I just don't like watching it when good characters like that suffer a not satisfactory ending. So I think thats why I did the Rocky search, similar reason. I properly will give it a miss if I know its going to be a sad ending.
