Aaron Pryor vs Alexis Arguello I
A great fight, but also a sad one, acknowledging that the classy fighter lost to a cheater. Actually, I don't pay much attention to regular PED cases, I'm pretty sure, that all pro-athletes juice up it during their camps, but to give a fighter some sort of an energizer between rounds is over the top. Furthermore, people majorly seem to notice "the mixed bottle" only before the 14th round, but the same phrase was heard before the 3rd one, while exactly that bottle can also be seen used before some other rounds. So, Pryor was constantly being reinforced during that bout. Also, Arguello was landing the biggest punches of the fight frequently, including his devastating right hands, which floored and KOed many fighters, even right in his previous bout against Rooney, but Pryor was taking everything like a robot.
One thing: I wonder if Pryor have a choice.....Panama Lewis as an evil man..
Also, Pryor won the rematch too, BUT I have to say by then the scandal had worn Alexis down psychologically.
Pryor obviously had a choice. Those two f*ckers got lucky with a failure of the investigation. Only if they didn't take part in that failure occuring.
Yes, Pryor won the rematch too, but Arguello was worn down not only psychologically. Tough fights and knockouts take it from fighters on the first place. Arguello had a lot of tough fights. The Pryor bout was the final straw to start a decline for Alexis.

That is very true, those punches diminish one's ability to take them with bone injuries and all that.
One thing about the rematch: It was a classic too. People seem to forget how action packed the "sister" was... and Arguello was oh so close to winning it in round two! Pryor was badly hurt!

Right. I even have Arguello up by a one round in the rematch, but Pryor up on points because of Arguello's KDs and a point deduction for low blows. Pryor wasn't the same without the energizer, Arguello wasn't the same after a tough KO loss, his reflexed and punch resistance became worse. The fight itself was great anyway.
Spinks beats Muhammad by UD to become World Light Heavyweight champion, dropping him once en route, not a great watch, a lot of feeling out rounds early, low workrate throughout especially first half, Muhammed edged the early rounds mostly by being slightly busier of the two, it wasnt until the 8th Spinks got to work, he pretty much won the fight on the jab, it was class when he used it
Spinks put Muhammad down in the 12th, two left hooks then a big right dropped Muhammad heavy and he took a pounding the rest of the round, Spinks a bit crude headhunting going for KO, Muhammad had hands up high, body was wide open but Spinks was too intent going upstairs, still Spinks seen the end out fairly easy to become World champ

There will always be a "what if" element to the first fight...
Spinks stops Cooney in 5 to retain his World Heavyweight titles, excellent showing from Spinks, a rare quick start from him, working the jab, moving and looking in control, Cooney for his part walked forward trying to work his left hand but Spinks was too cute and sharp for him
In the 5th Spinks opened Cooney up with both hands and finally dropped him like a stone, clubbed him with rights and landed a lovely left uppercut amongst the barrage, Cooney got up bit another onslaught had him down again, he bravely got up a second time but Spinks was teeing off and landing at will when the ref stepped in

This fight took place June 15 1987 at AC. I seen it on closed circuit television in the Trenton NJ area. Anyway i was sitting at a table and nearly everyone there thought this will be Gerry Cooneys redemption. He will win by knockout. I disagreed and told them dont count on it. Spinks fought a brilliant fight and absolutely putting a whipping on Cooney. This was one year before The Tyson-Spinks encounter.
Terrell outpoints Williams over 10 rounds comfortably, Williams stopped Terrell in 7 of the first fight but Terrell ran out a clear winner here, Williams punches carried more weight and he landed better shots but too far inbetween, Terrell picked him off with the jab and never stayed still, barely used the right but didnt really need to, it did look like Willliams knocked Terrell down early in 3rd but Terrell jumped straight back up and ref ignored it, the way Terrell held on suggests he was hurt though, still Terrell pretty much dominated Williams over the course

Spinks is criminally underrated because of the Tyson blowout.
Agreed. That was his last fight and he never fought again. He was a mediocre heavyweight. He was one of the all time greats as a light heavyweight. He was good enough to defeat an aging Larry Holmes. His style baffled and confused Holmes and i believe in the first fight Holmes may have taken him lightly.
After the Pryor dilogy and retirement Arguello tried brief comebacks. This was the first fight after Pryor II. Jefferson tried the best known tactics against Arguello, moving around and boxing from the outside. For two rounds Jefferson was looking good, but Arguello got rid of the rest pretty quickly. In the next two rounds Alexis started to break Jefferson down. In the 5th Jefferson was hurt both to head and body, down 3 times and waved.
Costello was edging early on, as he moved well and was pretty fast, but such slow starts had often turned good for Arguello and Alexis calculated Costello eventually. In the 4th round both threw one-twos, Arguello's one landed. Costello was hurt badly, he struggled to get up and was finished off on the ropes.

I too had Terrell the winner but much closer. I had it 46-45 on the 5 point must system used in the fight. 5-4-1 in rounds. A decent fight though.
Terrell outpoints Machen over 15 rounds to win the vacant World Heavyweight title, bit of a snoozer but a clear win for Terrell who was effective with the left lead, jabbing, moving and piling up points, Machen done enough to make it competitive but was never in it, any time the fight opened up it would get messy and the ref would need to seperate them, no drama, boring but a deserved win for Terrell

It was clinch fest? Machen just never seemed to get going. Guess you have to give Terrell some credit for doing enough.

Terrell decisions Chuvalo over 15 to retain his World Heavyweight title, classic clash of styles, Terrell the upright boxer, 99% of all punches he threw were left jabs, that shot along with his legs were all he used and needed for the win, Chuvalo def had his moments as well when he got up close and banged the left hook in, he landed the better punches and was the stronger guy in there, trouble was he was outworked and outlanded and Terrell was able to run out a wide winner keeping it simple, jabbing and moving

This fight was fixed. Terrell himself admitted so, on a documentary about Chuvalo. He said he knew when Chuvalo told him in round nine that he was threatened after Terrell asked him why wasn't he fighting harder..

Was Terrell ever in a good fight?
Didn't mean tp put a question mark after clinch fest. It certainly was a clinch fest.
Terrell certainly was not an exciting fighter, however the Machen fight seemed particularly hard to watch.
Toney stops an outclassed DeWitt after 6 rounds of a non title Super Middleweight fight, DeWitt retired on his stool after taking punishment the whole fight, he never hit Toney with anything and as early as the 1st he was in survival mode, Toney was quality, landed at will, lead left hooks, lead right hands, leading with the uppercut, oozed class, DeWitt done well to avoid going down at all, especially in the 5th when Toney opened him up with sharp accurate punching, still after 6 DeWitt had had enough and it was stopped
Dwight Muhammad Qawi v Matthew Saad Muhammad (1) and v Mike Rossman. Both absolutely superb examples of a much shorter fighter outjabbing his opponent. Brilliant stuff from Qawi.
Toney stops Barkley after 9 one sided painful rounds to become World Super Middleweight champion, Barkley pulled on his stool after his left eye was swollen shut, brave effort from Barkley he never stopped comong forward and trying to put it on Toney but he was made to look basic and crude and it was target practice for Toney
Toney put on a masterclass of defense and offense, looked so relaxed in there, slipping, parrying and countering everything that came his way, making Barkley miss and making him pay, every shot in the book and it was clear by the 1st it was a mismatch, only Barkley's heart kept him in it, Toney was a class apart though and each passing round, Toney was dishing out more punishment and Barkley was looking more busted up, by the 7th it was painfully one sided and it was no surprise to see Barkley pulled out after 9, incredible performance from Toney
