If Benn had fought Graham in 1990

Post by nobleart1978 »

If Benn had fought Herol Graham in 1990 with the WBO middleweight title on the line, how do you see it panning out.

Super elusive Herol against wild heavy hitting Benn.

Would have been a big event I reckon. Too many great fights were never made...

For me Benn was possibly too strong. The fight could have ended with one big hit from Benn. However, if Graham could have frustrated Benn by keeping it distance he could have beaten him on points. 12 rounds is a long fight to keep it at distance without making any errors.

I feel Benn would have caught him at some point.

Graham was a small hall fighter who’d been around since the 70s waiting around. Benn and his whole team would need to be drugged for him to face Graham, a £10,000 fighter (McCallum purse) to Benn’s projected £1M v Eubank or $5M v Leonard.

Graham stands him on his head.

Graham was the best in the business over four or five rounds - McCallum was struggling to lay a glove on him for the first half of fight. He then somehow got really sloppy though down the stretch, falling about and doing wrestling flips. It’s like he lacked stamina in his big legs.

Certainly a 22yo cocky Eubank didn’t lay a glove on him in their four-rounders in the gym. Then Ron Essett would get in and start landing after a few rounds, with the jab especially. Then the last four rounds a fresh Slugger O’Toole would body spar him. Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Eubank and O’Toole had good work together on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Eubank always chasing.

Benn, Eubank and Watson were ‘go-getters’.

Graham wasn’t.

Graham would have been all wrong for Eubank and would have shut him out. I reckon Benn might have been able to catch up with him though with his aggressive and sometimes swarming style.

Too good for his own good but mind numbingly boring so even beyond a casual (real boxing fan) really didn’t want to go see a tap dancer touching and moving and dodging

It was a shit combination, hence needing 10 years and 40-45 fights before a title shot

At Old Trafford in ‘93 the security was totally inadequate - guys were smashing through the turnstiles without tickets and standing in the gangways for the main event! Even when the police arrived they seemed unable to dislodge all of them, having successfully dispersed of touts outside. And punters in very expensive seats had to stand to get a view of some of the rounds. Those were dark days, dark brilliant fantastic times

But nevertheless topping the bill in an arena. Graham was brilliant against Douglas that night which probably is a more comparable fight than any other regarding Benn

He didn’t. Graham walked himself onto it with his hands down.
