It’s funny, the one time Watson dropped his hands getting cocky he got dropped. He certainly didn’t drop them against Benn in range!coghaugen11 wrote: ↑21 Apr 2021, 05:41 Unfortunately Brian Schumacher wasn’t up to much cop as a pro - captain of the 84 team. Michael Watson had beat him twice, should’ve been him that year facing Virgil Hill. But Scotland’s Russell Barker dropped him in the ABA semi and they gave him a 3-2

Brian had an extremely “colourful” life away from boxing. By the time he reached the pros, he was lost to the game.

Watson also had a 30-second win over John Beckles in the London ABAs. Beckles was beating the best Russians internationally, and beat Steve Collins in Ireland.

Highly touted Beckles, but he had no chin.
Billy Joe can certainly put on a masterclass over the first five or six rounds similar to amir Khan - after that it’s crunch time - but who knows he might do it and thinking I might have a bet on him
sorry to offend everyone on here who thinks he is the most evil man to ever put on a pair of boxing gloves
. Cruel to horses as well apparently, can you imagine the outrage if he’d knocked one out ?

I think making 75kg affected Beckles against Watson, usually he was a light heavy see. He had a great showing against the legendary Cuban Pablo Romero a year or two after the big Watson dust-up.
The hype for Beckles-Watson was something else. Beckles was beating everyone in Europe at 81kg and Watson was getting great sparring reports vs Kirkland Laing and Dennis Andries (plus the wins over Schumacher and NABC titles). He fought Beckles on his 19th birthday, people feared for opponents’ health v John Beckles at light heavy so for Watson to come out and do that was bonkers

Thing is Canelo is quite flat footed and can be outboxed - Lara and GGG beat him and Amir made him look pedestrian. But Saunders can’t just run and fiddle like a snide and a coward, can’t cheat and scum his way through against the Champion you have to actually plant your feet and take it. And he can’t because he’s not remotely in that league. Just a schmucky side-on southpaw fencer type.

That stiff short overarm right of Watson was some weapon - couldn’t miss it v Don Lee from the outset and cut him up with it (as a 22yo late sub!), knocked over Stackhouse and Christie in 30secs with it (Stackhouse gave Duran and Graham good fights). He couldn’t miss Eubank with it in their second fight when stepping up close to work, but Chris somehow absorbed them all night. It’s the shot that took big John Beckles out

Poor Errol was shot to pieces by the time they fed him to Watson.
Might be doing Beckles a disservice by calling him chinny but I recall he got blasted out inside a round on another big occasion.

Errol was never ever shot he just couldn’t hold a punch. See him in the gym in Brentwood sparring Crawford Ashley in 1990 and he’s lighting him up with incredible combinations.

To be fair it may have been against a Cuban
there is a classic video on YouTube of Beckles against Steve Collins

Has the B&I board merged with Boxing History board? Every time I come on here, people seem to be debating the ‘90s.

I see a couple of posts regarding the early 80s, no Brit pop 90s stuff.Boxerbeetle wrote: ↑21 Apr 2021, 07:58 Has the B&I board merged with Boxing History board? Every time I come on here, people seem to be debating the ‘90s.
We’re probably just reminiscing about those dark dark days when Linford, Colin Jackson and Sally Gunnell won gold and that.

These are the times of which we’re speaking mate:
Christie and Beckles going to Europe as kids, Bruno getting his eye done, and Eubank being Robin Hood (selling real Raybans on Peckham Market for a fraction of the RRP)

Seems that way - most threads are seemingly ending up debating British middleweights from the 90s. Getting boring now.Boxerbeetle wrote: ↑21 Apr 2021, 07:58 Has the B&I board merged with Boxing History board? Every time I come on here, people seem to be debating the ‘90s.

Incorrect. Graham and Christie are 80s middles. Wrong decade.

The reality is I don’t know anyone who knows who Canelo Alvarez or Billy Joe Saunders are.
I don’t know anyone who didn’t love Bruno, Eubank, Prince Naseem and Barry McGuigan.
That’s the real world.
DAZN is greed and MTK is murderous. These are genuinely tragic times.
