Are Sky sports boxing on the ropes.. Matchroom boxing jumping ship?

Up until recently I thought there was no way that Eddie would leave Sky, but It looks like the writing is on the wall and he is off to DAZN. The only question mark I have is whether AJ goes with him and how that all works out with the Fury fight contracts

I dont really understand why the likes of Joshua/Fury at this stage of their career sign multi fight contracts with any broadcaster/promoter at this stage of their careers.

The Canelo approach seems the smartest way to me. Fight on a fight by fight contract and dont tie yourself down to any one promoter/broadcaster.

Can't remember what they are called, but they claimed to be the worlds biggest sports agency and then tried to emphasise that point by getting some meat head who plays for Wycombe (currently bottom of the championship) to say a couple of words.

In truth, Kalle signing a deal with sky any time soon is highly unlikely as he only has Eubank junior in his UK stable at the minute and he genuinely believes he is a PPV star.

I disagree with the view that sky CANNOT provide a global platform for matchroom.....Sky WERE providing a global platform until DAZN UK...came on the scene. They were showing matchroom USA Bills, showing fights in Italy etc.

Are you referring to them showing international shows in the UK? I think the global platform is in relation to having a broadcast partner in various key terrorises around the globe - matchroom will give the global rights to shows to DAZN and work as partners to create new markets. Sky can't provide that.

There’ll be an announcement in the next 10 days or so confirming Matchroom going to DAZN for their U.K. output. Will be a 5 year deal but will exclude AJ/Whyte who may stay on Sky but will have their deals so could still be on DAZN.

I’m disappointed by it as I think they’re underestimating the work done by Sky is promoting fights and getting fighters known.

I’m sure lots of people will be glad as several people on here still hate Matchroom having sole access to the Sky boxing fund but I think they’ll be very difficult to replace, even in aggregate.

More than that, picture this: Someone at SKY gets a promoters license. No need to cut in a promoter, they can be very competitive in attracting fighters.

They gave up Champ League as it cost too much....same with recent India/England test series.

Eddie said last year (pre-Covid) you’d need to put more money up to encourage better shows as they money wasn’t there with rights fee for Sat Night fight night to put stacked card on.

Boxing is one sport Sky make money from with PPV platform - lot of the other sports don’t offer that but they need to also be paying out more (but after Covid) is that likely ?

Yeah soon as DAZN UK launched we didn’t get one other card and Sky have bought no Intl Shows either.

He doesn’t have the roster for it at present - not enough even for one decent Sky show I don’t think.

That may come with time though but I can’t see Hobson getting the/a deal with Sky.

More likely I think they will throw their platform open to the smaller promoters - That's what they will have to do if they want to have UK shows.

Where is the money? In Hearns pocket? Spent on Froch, Smith etc? idk.

A good example is Whyte & Chisora. Why do they have to be on 'stacked ppv' shows and not part of the normal subscription...? Stick all the 'good undercard' fights on their own show and id watch the shit out of it and if im interested in a main event im probably going to watch a shit-mismatch-undercard like normal either way.

Sky sports football went in hard against that europe super league but the bussiness men involved have been desperate for ppv football for years.

Sky should go back to the days where they were showing different promoters card each week. Sky were at their best during the Warren, Maloney, Matchroom and Hennessy days.
