Jermell Charlo-Brian Castano To Headline Showtime Telecast; Date & Venue TBA

Jermell Charlo has secured his chance to become boxing’s fully unified 154-pound champion.

Boxing Scene has confirmed that Charlo and unbeaten Brian Castano have agreed to terms for a title unification fight. Showtime is expected to televise Charlo-Castano as a main event either in June or July, though the date hadn’t been solidified as of Sunday.

Their fight likely will take place in Houston, Charlo’s hometown. Charlo, 30, and Castano, 31, will fight for Charlo’s IBF, WBA and WBC championships and Castano’s WBO belt.

La Nacion, a daily newspaper in Castano’s home country of Argentina, first reported that a deal is in place for the Charlo-Castano clash. An official announcement of Charlo-Castano could be made sometime this week.

Their 12-round bout will be the second straight title unification fight for Charlo, who made it clear Castano was his opponent of choice once Castano became a two-time champion February 13.

The Houston native knocked down Jeison Rosario three times and stopped him with a body shot in the eighth round of Charlo’s most recent fight, which took place September 26 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. Charlo (34-1, 18 KOs) defended his WBC crown that night and took the IBF and WBA championships from the Dominican Republic’s Rosario (20-2-1, 14 KOs) in their Showtime Pay-Per-View fight.

Charlo and his twin brother, Jermall Charlo, co-headlined Showtime’s pay-per-view event September 26. Jermall Charlo convincingly defeated Ukraine’s Sergiy Derevyanchenko by unanimous decision in their 12-round fight for Charlo’s WBC middleweight title that night.

Jermall Charlo’s next fight has not been announced, yet he, too, is expected to headline a “Showtime Championship Boxing” broadcast this summer, at some point after Jermell Charlo and Castano meet.

Castano, meanwhile, will get another opportunity to knock off a prominent opponent in his division.

The Argentinean champion fought Cuban southpaw Erislandy Lara to a 12-round split draw in March 2019 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Castano (17-0-1, 12 KOs) retained the WBA super welterweight title, though he was later stripped of that belt because he declined to defend it against mandatory challenger Michel Soro in France, Soro’s home country, due to financial concerns.

Castano became a two-time champion February 13, when he beat Brazil’s Patrick Teixeira by unanimous decision in their 12-round bout at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California. The favored Castano was the WBO’s mandatory challenger for Teixeira’s title.

Once Castano dethroned Teixeira (31-2, 22 KOs), he became the obvious opponent for Jermell Charlo’s next fight. Castano holds the only 154-pound championship Charlo doesn’t own and both boxers are affiliated with Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions, which made their fight easier to put together.

There is no better fight at 154..

Both are ranked at #1 and #2 at the division.

This will determine the true champion at the division.

Ring Magazine, Lineal Championship. No arguments.

The best matchup at the weight indeed. It looks that good not only on paper, it gotta be competetive. Anyway, I'd pick Charlo to win, I think his power will be crucial and Castano isn't a type of a fighter to avoid it for all time.

Jermell Charlo-Brian Castano Title Unification Fight Announced For July 17 On Showtime

The first full title unification fight in the history of the 154-pound division was officially announced Thursday.

Premier Boxing Champions and Showtime revealed that champions Jermell Charlo and Brian Castano will fight for four 154-pound titles July 17. Showtime will televise Charlo-Castano, as Boxing Scene reported Sunday, from a venue to be determined.

Their fight could take place in Houston, Charlo’s hometown. Wherever they meet, Charlo, 30, and Castano, 31, will fight for Charlo’s IBF, WBA and WBC belts and Castano’s WBO championship.

Their 12-round battle will be the second consecutive title unification fight for Charlo (34-1, 18 KOs).

The Houston native knocked down Jeison Rosario three times and stopped him with a body shot in the eighth round of Charlo’s last appearance, a Showtime Pay-Per-View main event September 26 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. Charlo captured the IBF and WBA belts from the Dominican Republic’s Rosario (20-2-1, 14 KOs) and defended his WBC crown.

Charlo and his twin brother, Jermall Charlo, co-headlined Showtime’s pay-per-view show September 26. Jermall Charlo clearly out-boxed Ukraine’s Sergiy Derevyanchenko to win a 12-round unanimous decision and retain his WBC middleweight title.

Jermall Charlo’s next fight was announced Thursday as well. The heavier Charlo (31-0, 22 KOs) will headline a “Showtime Championship Boxing” broadcast June 19, when he’ll make an optional defense of his WBC belt against Mexico’s Juan Macias Montiel (22-4-2, 22 KOs) at a venue to be announced in Houston.

Castano (17-0-1, 12 KOs) became an obvious opponent for Jermell Charlo once he beat Brazil’s Patrick Teixeira (31-2, 22 KOs) by unanimous decision in their 12-round fight for Teixeira’s WBO junior middleweight title February 13 at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California. Argentina’s Castano, who was the mandatory challenger for Teixeira’s title, became a two-time 154-pound champion two months ago.

Castano previously held the WBA super welterweight title. The WBA stripped him in June 2019 because Castano declined to defend his title against mandatory challenger Michel Soro in France, Soro’s home country, due to financial concerns.

Castano defeated Soro by split decision in July 2017 to win the WBA interim super welterweight title. It took the promoters of that event in Evian-les-Bains, France, approximately 10 months to pay Castano his purse from that fight in installments, which was why he was hesitant to work with them again for a rematch against Soro (35-2-1, 24 KOs).

my guess is that the winner soon vacates their titles to move up, as almost always happens when someone becomes undisputed, then timmeh fights for a vacant wbo title

Press Release | Tripleheader Lands in AT&T Center, San Antonio

Unified WBC, WBA and IBF World Champion Jermell Charlo and WBO World Champion Brian Castano will battle for undisputed status at super welterweight as all four 154-pound belts hang in the balance for the first time in history on Saturday, July 17 live on SHOWTIME from AT&T Center in San Antonio in a Premier Boxing Champions event.

SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and will also feature unbeaten Interim WBA Lightweight Champion Rolando “Rolly” Romero taking on Austin Dulay in the co-main event, plus unbeaten middleweight Amilcar Vidal matching up against veteran contender Immanuwel Aleem in a 10-round bout that opens the telecast.

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by Lions Only Promotions and TGB Promotions, are on sale now and can be purchased through www.attcenter.com. Romero vs. Dulay is co-promoted with Mayweather Promotions.

After years of scintillating matchups, memorable showdowns and drama-filled bouts, the super welterweight division will crown an undisputed champion on July 17 when the unified champion Charlo puts his three titles on the line against the hard-charging world champion Castano. The winner of this matchup will become the first four-belt champion of the 154-pound division.

Houston’s Charlo (34-1, 18 KOs) became a unified champion in his last fight, dropping Jeison Rosario three times on his way to an eighth-round knockout that earned him the WBA and IBF titles. Before that fight, Charlo had avenged the only loss of his career, as he reclaimed his WBC belt via an 11th-round knockout of Tony Harrison in one of 2019’s best fights. The 31-year-old is trained by Derrick James in Dallas and won his first world title in his debut fight with James by scoring an eighth-round knockout of John Jackson in 2016. He followed up that victory with three successful defenses, knocking out Erickson Lubin and Charles Hatley, while winning a decision over former world champion Austin Trout.

The 31-year-old Castano (17-0-1, 12 KOs) put on a spectacular performance to capture the WBO title in February, as he dominated Patrick Teixeira to wrest the belt away via unanimous decision. A native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, a win on July 17 would be a monumental achievement in the storied history of Argentine boxing. Prior to winning his title, Castano fought to a draw against two-division world champion Erislandy Lara in a 2019 action fight, and also owns triumphs over Michel Soro, Cedric Vitu and Wale Omotoso. A highly experienced amateur, Castaño notched victories over unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. and top middleweight Sergiy Derevyanchenko before he turned pro.

A rising prospect in the Mayweather Promotions’ stable, Romero (13-0, 11 KOs) won his interim title in August 2020 via unanimous decision over then unbeaten Jackson Marinez. The 25-year-old followed that victory up with an impressive seventh-round TKO over Avery Sparrow in January. Representing his hometown of Las Vegas, the undefeated Romero began his pro career with knockouts in 10 of his first 11 fights.

Dulay (14-2, 10 KOs) enters this fight the winner of three out of his last four bouts, as he seeks a career-best triumph over Romero on July 17. The 25-year-old most recently defeated Jose Gallegos by unanimous decision in November 2020, putting him back in the win column after a decision loss against former title challenger Diego Magdaleno. Fighting out of his hometown of Nashville, Tennessee, Dulay’s only other pro loss came against unbeaten rising interim super featherweight champion Chris Colbert.

Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, Vidal (12-0, 11 KOs) now fights out of Coachella, California, having beaten previously undefeated fighters in his last three bouts. The 25-year-old made his U.S. debut with a stoppage of Zach Prieto in November 2019, then returned quickly to knock out Leopoldo Reyna in January 2020. Most recently, the undefeated middleweight stopped Edward Ortiz in the second round of their November 2020 clash.

The 27-year-old Aleem (18-2-2, 11 KO) has been sparring with WBC Middleweight World Champion Jermall Charlo as he prepares to make his return to the ring. Born in East Meadow, New York and now residing in Richmond, Virginia, Aleem will look to bounce back from a draw against Matt Korobov and a majority decision loss against Ronald Ellis in his last two fights. Unbeaten in his first 18 pro bouts, Aleem owns an impressive stoppage victory over then unbeaten Ievgen Khytrov in their memorable 2017 brawl.

Charlo: Nothing Worries Me About Castano, We'll See if He Can Take The Pain I'll Bring

WBC, WBA and IBF junior middleweight world champion Jermell Charlo has promised to punish unbeaten Brian Castano, who holds the WBO's version of the world title.

The two champions will collide in a full division unification on Saturday, July 17, in a Showtime televised main event from the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas.

The winner will become the first four belt champion in the history of the junior middleweight division.

Charlo (34-1, 18 KOs) became a unified champion last September when he knocked out Jeison Rosario in the eight round to add the WBA, IBF titles to his collection.

Before that fight, Charlo avenged the only loss of his career, and reclaimed the WBC title, with a knockout of Tony Harrison in the eleventh round.

Now only Castano (17-0-1, 12 KOs) stands in the way of unifying the entire weight class.

Castano capture the WBO title in February when he dominated Patrick Teixeira over twelve rounds to secure a unanimous decision.

“I’m more than excited for July 17. I have so much potential and I’m just doing everything I can to get better and do better day by day. I’m hungrier than ever because I know I’m on the verge of capturing this undisputed title and doing something that nobody has ever done before at 154 pounds," Charlo said.

"There’s nobody out there that’s as fast, strong and elusive as me. Castano doesn’t possess anything I haven’t seen before, and we’ll see if he can take my power and the pain I’ll bring. But there’s nothing that worries me about this fight. I’m training super hard and aggressive and just taking it one day at a time. I’m so ready for this and more than likely he’ll walk into every shot I throw.”

“This is going to be a monumental and historic event on July 17 at AT&T Center in San Antonio,” said Tom Brown, President of TGB Promotions. “Charlo and Castaño will be vying to become the first undisputed champion at 154-pounds in the four-belt era.

“This is a big moment for the sport and I’m expecting both fighters to do whatever it takes to accomplish something that’s never been done before. Whoever emerges victorious on July 17, will cement their legacy and become the undisputed top fighter in one of the most stacked divisions in all of boxing.”

After years of scintillating matchups, memorable showdowns and drama-filled bouts, the super welterweight division will crown an undisputed champion on July 17 when the unified champion Charlo puts his three titles on the line against the hard-charging world champion Castaño. The winner of this matchup will become the first four-belt champion of the 154-pound division.

A highly experienced amateur, Castaño notched victories over unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. and top middleweight Sergiy Derevyanchenko before he turned pro.

“This is the biggest opportunity of my life and I won’t let it get away,” said Castaño. “I’ll make Charlo suffer more than he ever thought was possible. I’m training with only one goal in mind, to leave the ring with all of the belts on July 17.”

“I’ve watched some clips of Dulay fighting, and he definitely isn’t going to want to get hit by my power,” said Romero. “My trainer Bullit Cromwell and my dad are always by my side in camp, so we haven’t been working on doing too many things differently, we’re just fine-tuning. People said that all I have is power, so in my last fight I carried Sparrow the entire fight so I could show a different side. But for this fight, I don’t think I’m going to need to do that.”

“I moved my whole camp to Atlanta to focus mentally and to prepare physically for this fight,” said Dulay. “I’m bringing everything I got for this opportunity. But honestly, my training began over 20 years for this. It’s my time!”

“Training has been going great for July 17,” said Vidal. “This is the best camp of my life. I will be stronger and hit harder than ever before, which is not good news for Immanuwel Aleem. The fans should watch this fight because I have a spectacular knockout to show them. My opponent has excellent experience and is a very good fighter, but I have full confidence in my punching power and my ability to beat him.

“This is another great opportunity for me. I grew up dreaming of doing exactly this in the ring, fighting in America against great opponents who will test me. This is a chance to be one step closer to reaching my goal of becoming a world champion from Uruguay and I will make the most of it.”

“I’m excited to take advantage of this opportunity on July 17,” said Aleem. “Vidal has an undefeated record, so I know he’s going to come in with confidence, which should make this a great fight. I can’t wait to show off everything I’ve been working on. You’re going to see the very best version of myself in this fight and I’m going to do whatever it takes to have my hand raised.”

4 belt unification, at one of the best weights (not in terms of roster, just a great weight for boxing, 154s can whack, but are quick with good gas tanks) and yet noone seems to know its happening. Hope the promoter hasnt got any big Garrentees locked in..

I think Castano isn't very well known. He was Lara's hardest opponent since losing to Hurd and some thought he edged this bout ruled a draw. Most people seemed to like the draw.

Austin Dulay (Knee) Injured, New Opponent Sought For Rolando Romero on Charlo-Castano Card

For the second time in as many fights, a scheduled opponent for Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero wasn’t prepared to sign up for kayos.

Las Vegas’ Romero is on the hunt for a new opponent after Austin Dulay was forced to withdraw from their scheduled July 17 clash. A knee injury forced Dulay out of their planned Showtime-televised bout, which was to serve in chief support to the undisputed junior middleweight championship between Jermell Charlo (34-1, 18KOs) and Brian Castaño (17-0-1, 12KOs) at AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas.

“We had to pull out of the fight due to a knee injury that we got during camp,” Dulay revealed overnight, hours after rumors circulated of his withdrawing from the fight. “We didn’t have time to make up for lost time.”

Boxing Scene has learned that a replacement opponent is in the process of being finalized, though not officially signed as this goes to publish.

The fallout marks the second straight time where Romero (13-0, 11KOs) is forced to settle for a late replacement. The current WBA interim lightweight titlist saw his last fight fall apart at the scale, after Justin Pauldo showed up 3.6 pounds over the 135-pound divisional limit for their scheduled January 23 clash in Uncasville, Connecticut. Efforts to have the fight take place at 140 pounds were scrapped altogether after Pauldo failed a pre-fight physical.

Romero would go on to face Philadelphia’s Avery Sparrow, whom he stopped in their seventh round of their non-title fight.

The bout with Dulay would have marked the first defense of the WBA interim lightweight title for Romero, who claimed the secondary title in a disputed 12-round decision over Jackson Mariñez last August. Always quick with an unkind word for his divisional peers, the unbeaten 25-year-old lightweight voiced his displeasure in his own way over the change of plans ahead of his next fight.

“I don’t know how anyone could decline a world title shot and more money than they ever made,” Romero openly questioned via social media upon learning of Dulay withdrawing from the fight. “My opponent had a panic attack and pulled out of the fight.

“I know I say this often but I found the new biggest bitch in boxing… Austin Dulay.”

Naturally, the commentary wasn’t well received by the stated target.

“No one is scared to fight you, Rolly,” responded Dulay. “We asked to fight you. We want to fight you. I’ll give you 10K of my fight purse to push back the fight to a later date.

“Your toughest fight, you lost. Everyone knows it! So if you think it’s sweet, push it back and let’s run it. There’s no bitch in my blood. And if you wanna run your mouth, you do it. Your fan girls are mad annoying.”

The balance of the show will move forward in present form. In addition to Charlo-Castaño, the three-fight telecast will also include an intriguing middleweight clash between Uruguay’s Amilcar Vidal (12-0, 11KOs) and Immanuel Aleem (18-2-2, 11KOs), a Long Island-bred product now based out of Virginia.

Every indication points to Romero remaining on the card, pending approval of a replacement opponent. Sweden’s Anthony Yigit (24-1-1, 8KOs) is on the undercard and currently without an opponent, with the former title challenger rumored to land the assignment.

Representatives from Showtime and Premier Boxing Champions were not in a position to comment as discussions are ongoing regarding the matter.

For such a big fight this one has had a lot less promotion than it deserves.
