Larry Holmes' height

Post by Finkel »

Please could I confirm Larry Holmes' height?
https://boxrec.com/en/proboxer/150
It is listed as 190cm
Other online sources seem to put him either at 190.5 or 191cm

Is 190cm correct?

Sorry if this is the wrong forum for such a question

Everyone is 1cm taller in the morning as you shrink slightly throughout the day. 0.5cm or 1cm is tiny. No tale of the tape is accurate anyway and most measurements are made up. Even scales measuring weight differ from machine to machine.

Thanks for the response. I did note that he was entry 150 in the database. So I thought it might have been a legacy typo. But you are correct in what you say.

Is the listed height with shoes on or off ? I knew a guy who had a piece of Gerry Cooney and he told me Cooney is actually 6'4"-without shoes. I suspect Holmes' listed height(6'3") is with shoes on and also a roundup.

I met Larry Holmes at his Round One Club in Easton on July 11 1987. It was 6 months before the Tyson fight. In fact the Tyson fight was not even signed at the time. I am 6 foot 1 inch tall and Larry was several inches taller than me. I would say 6 foot 3 or 6 foot 4. He was enormous and he was not in training at the time so he was walking around heavier than what he fought at. I tried to talk boxing with him but he was more interested in flirting and schmoozing the women.

reality is that the difference between an inch is totally tiny , when you're deadling with 6'2 - 6'3 guys it's pretty meaningless and hardly noticable

also, you'll find that pretty much everyone think they're actually an inch or two taller than they are, or at minimum generously round up their height

I agree, especially when someone having a larger forehead or longer skull could just be difference

I remember some of Holmes fights where he was listed at 6'4 and others 6'3.
Foreman seemed to be listed at 6'3. Then during his comeback, he seemed to be 6'4.
Always wondered if they really measure a guy for every fight.

Agree that lot of guys aren't the height they think they are, or at least what they say they are.

I remember when I used to work in retail and had to get a drivers license when someone wrote a check. At really tall woman who seemed like she was at least 6'0 always listed herself as 5'11.
However, I never saw a guy that was 5'11 on his license. Saw an awful lot who listed on their license that they were 6'0 who sure didn't seem that tall.

I’m not sure anyone is, I’ve read posts from pros saying they’ve never been measured. Tyson was always recorded as 5’11.5 then it changed to 5’10. I remember watching a video of Tyson being measured when he first hit the scene, and he was shown standing by a height chart showing 5’11.5” but he was standing about a foot away from it so it was all smoke and mirrors to make him look taller.

I am 6', but I always tell people I am 5'11", just to piss them off even more when they are shorter than me and claiming to be 6'.

Lots of people exaggerate their height, my mate is 6'5" but I've heard him tell people he's 6'7" when they've asked how tall he is. He often wore quite thick basketball type trainers or shoes with bigger heels to look taller. I also had another mate who swore he was 6'2", he wouldn't believe he was shorter as he looked identical in height to me and I'm 6'0", when I stood back to back with him, without shoes on, he was only half an inch taller. He still wouldn't accept he wasn't 6'2" and said I must be taller than I thought :brick:
