Tom Brown: Of Course Hearn Wants Andrade Off His Platform, PBC To Pay For Charlo Fight

The primary promoter for Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions doesn’t consider Jermall Charlo-Demetrius Andrade as big of a fight as Eddie Hearn sees it.

Andrade’s promoter expressed a willingness after Andrade’s most recent win to send Andrade to a PBC platform for one fight just to make Charlo-Andrade happen later this year. Tom Brown, president of TGB Promotions, questioned Hearn’s motivation for suggesting PBC platforms for that middleweight title unification fight.

“The problem is this: nobody wants to see a Demetrius Andrade fight,” Brown told Boxing Scene. “And then I wanna steal a line from Eddie Hearn – Demetrius Andrade is absolutely horrendous to watch. So, of course Eddie would like to get Andrade off his platform [DAZN] and have PBC get stuck paying for [a Charlo-Andrade fight].”

Hearn has had difficulty securing a high-profile fight for Andrade since the unbeaten two-division champion signed with Matchroom Boxing and DAZN nearly three years ago.

Brown also took issue with Hearn’s criticism of Charlo’s upcoming optional WBC middleweight title defense against Juan Macias Montiel. Houston’s Charlo (31-0, 22 KOs) is heavily favored to beat Mexico’s Montiel (22-4-2, 22 KOs) in a fight Showtime will televise June 19 in Houston, but Brown believes Hearn should know better than to underestimate determined Mexican underdogs.

“Eddie should know better than anyone after bringing Mauricio Lara over to the UK and he destroyed Josh Warrington,” Brown said of Lara’s ninth-round, technical-knockout win February 13 in London. “This was an unknown, 21-2, tough Mexican kid that came to fight. So, I’d rather have a Juan Macias Montiel, with 22 knockouts in 22 wins, any day of the week in an action slugfest than a Demetrius Andrade stinker.”

Andrade (30-0, 18 KOs) dropped mandatory challenger Liam Williams in the second round of their 12-round fight for Andrade’s WBO middleweight title April 17 in Hollywood, Florida. The left-handed Andrade went on to beat Williams (23-3-1, 18 KOs) by unanimous decision in a main event DAZN streamed from Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

Hearn called out Charlo and IBF/IBO champ Gennadiy Golovkin, whom Hearn’s company co-promotes, to fight Andrade after his victory over Wales’ Williams (https://www.BS.com/hearn-i-don ... de--157073). The outspoken promoter also chastised Charlo for fighting Montiel, who was knocked out by countryman Jaime Munguia (36-0, 29 KOs) in the second round in February 2017.

Brown defended the 30-year-old Charlo’s resume, particularly the two-division champion’s signature wins against Julian Williams (27-2-1, 16 KOs, 1 NC) and Sergiy Derevyanchenko (13-3, 10 KOs).

“He’s coming off an impressive victory over Sergiy Derevyanchenko,” Brown said of Charlo’s dominant points win versus Derevyanchenko on September 26. “Derevyanchenko gave Golovkin his most grueling fight to date. He handled him easier than both Triple-G and Danny Jacobs did. So that was a huge victory over a very talented fighter. And then Mall’s a two-weight world champion. His last fight against a 154-pounder was against the undefeated number one contender in the IBF, Julian Williams. He retained the title in a fifth-round stoppage. He dropped him I think once in the second round and twice in the fifth round before the fight was stopped. So, he’s got a bit of a resume, and a lot more than anyone’s giving him credit for.”

To be fait to Hearn, he did offer $7m to Jermall (his highest purse) to fight Andrade on DAZN.

Jermall and his team don't reply, or don't want to fight on DAZN, other option is fight under the PBC banner.

Also, who is Brown to say the fans don't wanna see Andrade vs. Charlo.

When Bob Arum claimed he was losing money promoting Terence Crawford, Eddie Hearn said he sympathises, because he faces the same predicament with Demetrius Andrade.

Everyone appears to be blaming Charlo for not facing Andrade, but Demetrius can't get a fight against anyone.

And there has to be a reason for that. It doesn't have anything to do with fear/cowardice either.

How many fighters (not named AJ, Canelo or their opponents) command $7m payday's from Matchroom/DAZN? Not many (if any?).

How much does Andrade earn per fight? Would it be optimistic to say he maxes out at $1.5m, with his opponents receiving a fraction of that?

Is Hearn claiming he was willing to lose millions promoting the Andrade-Charlo event? I'm not sure I believe him.

Or was the $7m part of a bigger multi-fight DAZN deal?

I can't remember, but $7m seems high to me.

For instance, Eddie Hearn only offered Andy Ruiz Jr. $4m for the Dillian Whyte fight, but that bout would have been partially-funded by a combination of DAZN's subscribers and Sky Box Office PPV's buys.

It was part of the US DAZN deal.

Hearn has lost DAZN plenty.. He paid Ramirez $4m to fight Hooker on DAZN, then paid Mikey Garcia $7m to fight Vargas (who was paid $3m)..

Charlo has been saying he wants to unify and then fights Montiel. He’s been offered a fight with Andrade and it sounds like it wasn’t even considered.

There aren’t too many options for Charlo if he wants to unify. I’d much rather watch Andrade/Charlo than Montiel/Charlo, as would many others I think.

Tom Brown is just deflecting.

DAZN’s (recent) middleweight roster included names, such as Danny Jacobs, GGG, Canelo, Jaime Munguia, Billy Joe Saunders, Chris Eubank Jr., David Lemieux etc.

If Eddie Hearn can make money matchmaking Andrade against those guys, then Demetrius would be facing fellow stablemates, but he isn't.

Eddie Hearn has already conceded (during an iFLT TV interview) that he loses money promoting Andrade's events.

I agree. Jermall Charlo facing Juan Macias Montiel is a pretty dire fight!

To be fair though, if you review the WBC’s ranking’s (those fighters ranked above Montiel):

• Jaime Munguia is in line to face GGG towards the end of the year and already has a stay-busy fight lined-up in June. He has bigger fish to fry than Charlo, since he'll earn more money elsewhere.
• Jermall Charlo has already beaten Sergiy Derevyanchenko. There’s no reason for a rematch.
• Maciej Sulecki has only beaten a journeyman since his loss against Demetrius Andrade. He hasn't achieved anything at 160lbs.

The remainder of the WBC’s top-15 rankings are pretty bad!

Lose money or not, Hearn already offered to pay for it and giving Jermall his highest purse..

Alternatively, they said Andrade will take the same money as Derev did for it to be on PBC.

It’s a better sell than Mall-Derev.

This is 2 Black American middleweights, unifying the middleweight division.

Matchroom have tried to pay for it (no one had disputed that from what I can tell) but didn’t hear back. I think Eddie realised that he needs to get Andrade a big fight to even get close to be taken as a top boxer in the US.

Jacobs fought Canelo on DAZN and both have been fighting higher than middleweight since mid 2019 so it’s understandable why Andrade hasn’t fought either.

Eubank Jr, Lemieux, Mungia aren’t promoted by Matchroom. They might be on the same network but that doesn’t always make things straightforward. Eubank Jr was with PBC until this weekend and seemingly left because he wasn’t being kept active.

Billy Joe was down to fight Andrade. It was signed and sealed but Billy Joe tested positive and then moved up to Super Middle.

The fighters I listed are all aligned with DAZN.

That’s precisely what I claimed.

Eddie Hearn can’t orchestrate bouts between Andrade and his fellow DAZN stablemates.

We haven’t heard both sides of the story about the Charlo-Andrade situation, because Al Haymon, without exception, NEVER talks to the media. And the PBC chief is in control of Jermall Charlo’s career.

Bob Arum, Oscar De La Hoya, Kathy Duva and Eddie Hearn have all made bizarre claims in the past about Al Haymon or his fighters, but the PBC boss never responds.

So they can get away with saying anything, because it won’t be refuted by Haymon.

And finally, Eddie Hearn said he loses money every time he promotes Andrade’s events.

Your excuses contained within your opinions are intriguing, but the facts I’ve cited cannot be refuted.

People are focussing the blame on Jermall Charlo for Demetrius Andrade’s predicament, whilst ignoring glaringly obvious facts.

Eddie Hearn loses money pitting Andrade against anonymous borderline contenders. That’s the reason why Demetrius can’t get fights... AGAINST anyone half-decent.

Demetrius Andrade only has two fights remaining of his contract with Matchroom.

Andrade pulled out of a previous contract to fight a Charlo so they don't want to do business with him. This is the biggest obstacle.

This is what Charlo has said:

“I’m hungry to consider myself one of the best in the world. I’m out to fight the best out there. That’s been the hardest achievement right now,” Charlo told the PBC Podcast. “My team has reached out to guys like Golovkin, Canelo [Alvarez], and [Demetrius] Andrade. Whoever has a belt at 160. I’m obviously one of the top-tiers in the division, so it’s not as if they can avoid me. But, of course, I’m one of the most avoided, but all I’ve got to do is keep fighting and keep winning.

“Yeah, [Golovkin is] a fight that I really want, yeah it’s a fight that can be made. It’s just a matter of time. It’s a matter of how we can get Golovkin in the ring with Jermall Charlo. We both want things our way, A-side, B-side. I’ll take the B-side. I’ll fight in a big ring if they want to fight in a big ring. I’ll fight in their city if they want to fight in their city. I don’t pick the fights, I’m not into the management group.”

“F--- the money, f--- the fame, f--- the networks,” Charlo said in an Instagram post following Alvarez eighth-round stoppage win over Billy Joe Sauders. “I’ll lose my title and go to 168, make the fight happen now.”

“I fight whoever they put in front of me, so regardless I train hard for every fight. Every time I get up in the morning and I look at those world titles on the ceiling, there’s more out there, there’s more to come … I’m going to showcase my talent on June 19th on Showtime so you guys get a chance to see me again. [Montiel] deserves a shot.”

Jermall Charlo wants Andrade to beat Montiel, then he’ll fight him

WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo says he wants WBO champ, Demetrius Andrade, to earn a fight against him by beating his recent challenger Juan Macias Montiel.

Jermall looked both irritated and nervous when he was asked about his thoughts on a fight between him and WBO 160-lb champion Andrae (30-0, 18 KOs) for his next made.

Initially, Jermall seemed like he was keeping it together in giving a measured response to the question. Still, then he seemed to lose his cool, talking nervously, saying that the commissions, sanctioning bodies, and networks could create an obstacle to him fighting Andrade.

It looked like Charlo came unglued from a small question.

With the way Jermall was sounding so pessimistic about the possibility of him fighting Demetrius, it seemed very, very obvious that he wants no part of taking the fight with the talented WBO champion.

When Jermall suggested that Andrade fight Montiel to earn a fight against him, it was crystal clear that he wants no part of fighting the Rhode Island native.

Jermall wants Andrade to beat Montiel first

“I’m down to get in the ring with anybody,” said Charlo at the post-fight news conference last Saturday night when asked if he’d be interested in fighting Demetrius Andrade next.

“I just showed y’all a fight like, you know. Let’s see if he could beat the dude [Juan Macias Montiel] I just fought. And then we’ll talk.’

Call it fear or whatever but it sure does look like Charlo wants no part of Andrade, and it’s understandable after watching him struggle against Montiel last Saturday.

Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs) defeated the #4 WBC ranked Montiel (22-5-22 KOs) by a grueling 12 round unanimous decision last Saturday night in a Showtime Boxing televised fight at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.

The fight was supposed to be a gimme for the 31-year-old Charlo, who some boxing fans believe is the #1 fighter at 160.

However, the younger fighter, 27-year-old Montiel, walked through Charlo’s shots all night long to punish him with shots to the body and head.

In the later rounds of the contest, Charlo’s gas tank was totally depleted and was hurt multiple times by Montiel to the head and body.

Charlo putting up roadblocks for Andrade fight

“We going to clean up the division sooner or later,” said Jermall. “I don’t make the fights. I don’t pick the fights.

“You know, whatever circumstances that he in, I’m not here for none of that,”
said Charlo talking fast and sounding highly agitated.

“I’m a fighter. But I don’t have rights to make the sanctioned bouts and to make the commissioners of each belt and he fights on a different network. I’m not into all that, all right?’

“But he’s a horrible fighter. He’s a horrible fighter. I mean, it’s gonna be a horrible fight,” said Charlo in making excuses for why he shouldn’t have to fight Demetrius.

Andrade’s fighting style, after the first three rounds of bouts, is utterly appalling.

And Demetrius hasn’t beaten anybody to deserve to engage in a marquee bout.

None of Boo Boo’s big-name rivals at 160lbs or 168lbs will be remotely interested in facing him.

People keep blaming others for Andrade’s predicament, because they’ve only got short-term memories.

They need reminding that as well as rejecting the Jermell Charlo bout, Andrade also rejected opportunities to face Sergiy Derevyanchenko, Matt Korobov and Erislandy Lara. Demetrius also previously conceded (on video) that he wasn't ready to face Billy Joe Saunders.

Once upon a time guys were proud to EARN their shots. In this era, guys (like Andrade) want to crash a few press conferences and then expect to stumble on a big payday.

Everyone appears to be blaming Charlo for not facing Andrade, but Demetrius can't get a fight against anyone.

And there has to be a reason for that. It doesn't have anything to do with fear/cowardice either.
There are 2 sides to everything

Andrade is boring and has no fans
Charlo takes less money to fight garbage

They are both at fault. Its why boxing is at its all time worst

There aren’t too many options for Charlo if he wants to unify. I’d much rather watch Andrade/Charlo than Montiel/Charlo, as would many others I think.

Tom Brown is just deflecting.
This.

Montiel came to fight and he gave Charlo good work. I don't know who is gonna fight Charlo next to earn better money than the offer of Hearn ?(to fight Andrade)

The thing with Andrade is that he's a good boxer with solid boxing fundamentals that he knows what he is doing in the ring when he's boxing smart. He's not that boring like Lara. BJS was not more exciting fighter than Andrade. Yet Canelo fought both Lara and BJS.

I guess Charlo is trying to stay safe/undefeated, move up at smw, get a belt and then wait Canelo's call. It's just business.
