worst managed fighters

Post by margaret thatcher »

past or present, any level

for present: since bivol and smokin joe smith fought, bivols only fought lenin castillo

smith has fought hart, alvarez, and vlasov and won a title. nows he's a solidly big attraction on us tv and bivol is forgotten and on undercards like this despite widely beating him

bivol being managed like total poop. he beat smith, pascal, and stopped barrera.........yet now he's spent the last 2 years fighting lenin castillo and craig richards ...da f@ck man

Joe Calzaghe. 9 years between winning the title against Eubank to unifying against Lacy.

Eubank Jr has fought 2 rounds since February 2019 and is now coming back against Marcus Morrison, I'd say that's a pretty bad spell

I’m sure he earned fine for those 20 or so fights between Eubank and Lacy but he wouldn’t have been earning anywhere near the kind of money he did against Kessler, Hopkins, Jones Jr at the tail end of his career. Fighting Mger Mkrtchyan in your 13 defence at the Cardiff Ice Rank isn’t going to make you rich!

I just wish they’d rolled the dice earlier on with him as he was an amazing fighter with genuine power until his hand troubles.

Jack Catterall is a decent fighter but I don't think he's been matched too well in terms of preparation for a potential world title shot after the Taylor/Ramirez unification - yeah he's got the ranking with the WBO but the lack of a real testing step up fight (or two) could really cost him if he gets a shot at world level once the belts fragment/Taylor or Ramirez moves up to 147.

He was just milking title defences..

You can and can't say Hatton because he got the better fights eventually... but he was very active, defending the WBU belt 4 times a year..

Frank really milked that title to the UK fans.

Me too, but I don't think he was badly managed.

I think JC could have been good enough to be an ATG but of course that is conjecture, and the real stain on his record is that he didn't get/ want the big fights earlier to see whether he could have cleaned up or not.

Yeah - he’s not the most poorly managed fighter but I still think he was badly managed/promoted.

He wasn’t well known, didn’t sell loads of tickets (until Lacy) and hadn’t crossed over like a fighter of his quality should have done.

9 years of (mostly) fighting nobodies or guys at the tail end of their careers.

I’m going to go obscure with this one! Mario Taborda put in on his debut with a 55-3-8 Carlos Mozon the year before he won the world title. Suicidal management.

I always felt that Monzon was well-managed. It took them a long time to secure him a world title shot but he enjoyed a seven-year reign and made 14 successful defences before retiring as undefeated champion in 1977.

Monzon had 99 fights then retired, makes you wonder why he didn’t go for 1 more and reach 100 then retire

Depends what you look for really....Hatton made a ton of Money but I honestly think he wasnt quite the same fighter before he fought for the world title proper.

Joe Calazghe could likewise either be considered the worse or the best. For me I always believe that a prime JC vs a prime RJJ would have been a one sided match....fighting his "Bums" probably prolonged his championship career

This is the million dollar question, personally I think he was the real deal, but we will never know.
Even dropping a competitive decision to a prime RJJ would have enhanced his reputation compared to now. Losing in a one sided match would but him more in Hattons category

Mickey Duff had Joe in with Delaney on telly early doors. He wasn’t pampered. Eubank for the vacant wasn’t easy.

What happened there?

He was WBC light-heavyweight champion and earning good money but then made the mistake of trying to handle his own affairs (with family members) and it all went tits up. Firstly, he arranged a non-title fight in the States for himself against Willie Taylor and broke his right hand on the way to a 10-round decision. That cost him 14 months of his reign and when he came back he earned just £1,000 (net) after outscoring Yaqui Lopez in defence of his title in a bruising 15-rounder in Denmark. Worst of all, Conteh was later stripped of the WBC title when he pulled out of a defence against Argentina's Miguel Cuello, a man he would have beaten with ease, just three days beforehand. Conteh was unhappy with TV money. By now, Conteh was beginning to see the light and reunited with manager and trainer George Francis and promoter Mickey Duff but he never won back his old world title, in three attempts, and his right hand proved a problem for the remainder of his career.

Eubank JR seems the obvious current pick .
Total lack of activity and any quality , yet now gobbing off about GGG !
