buster, i can definitely remember the kid fighting down here in melbourne a few times in the early nineties and thought he was great. pushing my memory a little but i'm sure Keefy Ellis had him for a while. I remember he had a great fight with Darren Miller.

I saw two of fights in Melbourne, one was against Danny Bellert and to this day he stands out in my memory as the best I've ever seen live. His handspeed was phenomenal and I'm still convinced he could have gone all the way if he had chosen.

Have been told on another forum hes still winning toughman contests in Qld somewhere. If anyone has any of his fights I'll trade or buy in a heartbeat.

I started that thread out of curiosity. One of his friends said he was stiffed by people who were supposed to be looking after him.

Shame he did not go on. He will remain one of the great mysteries of Australian boxing.

I sparred with him in the gym in 1990 or 1991. A few years ago I asked his trainer Keith Ellis Jr about him. He told me he lost interest put on lots of weight and went interstate.

Of interest, Danny Bellert (mentioned above) in his 2nd last fight, back on 1st October 2004, was stopped by a young bloke making his debut - Daniel Geale.

Based on his record, Cliff Samardin could have gone just as far as Daniel Geale.

One of my gym mates lost to him at the 87 state titles. They were about 38kg but even then you could see Samardin had the goods. Probably should have lost to Lovemore Ndou on the Tszyu v Mayweather undercard. But could have been anything if he stuck to it.

If its the same person who threatened an elderly artist, that he would put a contract on his life.... it certainly wouldnt surprise me....

He didn't like the artist's work ey? Still, a death threat is a bit harsh :o

All class, he was living in Cairns very humble man. There is a good utube video about him.
I have told this story before - i had some boxers at the PCYC Cairns sparring and Cliff had come in to help out and do a few rounds. Lovemore had just won a world title and i mentioned it in passing to the other trainers and boxers present. I think most people would have said hey yeah i beat him, but Cliff didnt say a word just smiled at me. No one else there realized what had happened as known of them really knew who he was. When he left i told hem!

Love to hear it when fighters aren't braggart smartarses, as most seem to think they need to be to get noticed :TU:
