Errol Christie
Herol Graham
Rod Douglas

Huge wastes of severe talents. I can only imagine their torment seeing Nigel Benn headlining Vegas and Chris Eubank become Chris Eubank, signing £10M deals. Or the whole public rallying behind Michael Watson after the supposed bad dec at Earls Court.

He's earned a lot and had numerous world title shots though, so you could argue he's been well managed in the long run.

I was looking at the comments and thinking "kell Brook? Why are people saying him?" But then I thought about it and putting him in with a killer in GGG and then arguably the p4p no.1 Erroll spence then putting him in with Crawford, all 3 are modern day greats and are good to have on your record but Eddie Hearn sold kell down the river in the GGG fight and he wasn't the same after that.

What happened there?

He was WBC light-heavyweight champion and earning good money but then made the mistake of trying to handle his own affairs (with family members) and it all went tits up. Firstly, he arranged a non-title fight in the States for himself against Willie Taylor and broke his right hand on the way to a 10-round decision. That cost him 14 months of his reign and when he came back he earned just £1,000 (net) after outscoring Yaqui Lopez in defence of his title in a bruising 15-rounder in Denmark. Worst of all, Conteh was later stripped of the WBC title when he pulled out of a defence against Argentina's Miguel Cuello, a man he would have beaten with ease, just three days beforehand. Conteh was unhappy with TV money. By now, Conteh was beginning to see the light and reunited with manager and trainer George Francis and promoter Mickey Duff but he never won back his old world title, in three attempts, and his right hand proved a problem for the remainder of his career.
Thanks. I think fighters are more clued up today about management but in those days was a closed shop.

On an aside - Alex Garcia not taking the Foreman fight for half a million stands out.

X2
Plus he got way more TV coverage early on, way more than he or his opposition deserved, a lot like Connor Benn actually.
He took time out after the WBSS loss, that's understandable as he gave it everything and came up short- crushingly because it was eventually against a one armed Groves.

Not really, Groves did his arm in the last round.

He's only fought for a legitimate world title once hasn't he? I take your point about the dough though, although I still think that he could have had a lot more meaningful fights to this point, despite his shortcomings skillset wise.

Yes, you're right. For some reason I though Degale was for a proper belt. And I wasn't sure of Saunders had the WBO at the time.

Ah thanks, I was trying to remember who that fighter was the other day… Alex Garcia. I recall he took a warmup instead and got flattened - same thing happened with Tommy Morrison warming up for the Lennox Lewis mega fight: knocked out in one round, that was bad management...

Olympic gold medallist James degale fighting in shopping centres looked bad for a while.

And triple G in the early days - everybody knew this was a potential superstar, but he was defending his world title in real backwaters and no TV...

Garcia looked intimidating with his San Quentin tattoos (in those days tattoos were fairly rare.) Mike Dixon flattened him. He had a decent tache too.

Controversial but I’d say AJ. since the wlad fight he’s done f all. Almost at calzaghe level of boring matches.

Always thought Gary Mason was badly managed, took forever to step up, and was still fighting the likes of Terry Armstrong after nearly thirty fights,

Carl Froch was expertly managed prior to f*cking off to Hearn. That's why Froch has one of the best reputations and legacies in British boxing.

All the guys mentioned are successful. surely that's a sign of good management ?

The Hearn's had a diamond with Richard Williams and managed to f*ck his career right up.

I always thought Nathan King deserved better management.

Really valid point (your opening paragraph) and yes surely a managers role is also to try and prevent eff ups in and out of the ring.

So with that in mind, surely the winner is Mike Tyson once Jimmy Jacobs closed his eyes... From biggest sports star by far globally to jail in 3years, losing his title and ALL connections that brought him success in the interim.

That’s an odd one, mate. To me, he’s fought the best that’s been available at the time (Parker was unbeaten and had belt, Povetkin was to 5, Ruiz and Takam were late replacements).

Outside of Fury/Wilder, who do you think he should have fought instead?

it's not just if you're succesful.........it's what you did vs what you could've done. you can still get succesful underachievers, or successful fighters who didnt earn nearly as well as they coulve

Yes whilst I agree that his fights have had huge dull moments since Klitchsko (aside from him getting caught vs Ruiz)...you cant really fault the opponents.....with the possible exception of Whyte remstch instead of Miller
