which non-combat sport would be of most benefit for boxing

Post by margaret thatcher »

randomly this question came to me

which non-combat sport, if you trained and/or competed in it, would be most helpful for boxing?

Middle distance running and tennis.

(with the middle distance running, the training should be more like a 400m runner moving to 800/1500m, than a 5000/1000m runner moving down).

Edit: the throws are also good but not in isolation. A good all round few years in an athletics club doing a bit of everything does the world of good for any youngster really.

I read 'non-combat' as 'non-contact'. That said I've never found rugby union players who've come to the gym to be any good. League players can usually do okay though.

Yes. At a competitive level, it's very similar to boxing in terms of 1:1, nowhere to hide, exposure to the crowd, pressures, etc. It's also good for timing, arm speed, controlled aggression, lateral movement, using the hips to generate power, conditioning, etc.

Ice skating. Not being funny but improves balance and relaxation of muscles

Darts. Much better nicknames and ring walks than boxers.

Not a sport, but as a naturally gangly uncoordinated specimen I always felt the years of playing drums helped when I started boxing

Would be interesting to see what sports boxers have done before/alongside boxing in the the past.

Would imagine dance would be surprisingly useful, along with distance running

Football. Woodhouse and McKenzie at a high level in both. McCallum played five a side on a Tuesday night in Chippenham.

I played tennis to a fairly decent level when I was a kid (played for my county and became a qualified coach) before I started doing any boxing when I went to university.

I think your points around movement, control and competing 1on1 are fair. However my fitness was nowhere near where it needed to be (which I was quite surprised by - obviously pros would be a lot fitter) and I was very one arm dominant.

Most sports would benefit but what makes boxing special is that you need to deal with getting hit in the head which is a deal breaker for many

We have a good am heavyweight who his coach met whilst playing basketball. He's studying at university and is a well to do black Londoner. His trainer is related to the Fury camp and he gets him regular sparring with Hughie and Rico.

I watched the most eagerly anticipated gypsy bareknuckle in years yesterday and it was worse than fencing. An hour and half and I don't think a punch got landed. And it was ppv. I got it on YouTube later on.

100 grand kicking money. Each family put up 50. Winner takes all. It was a draw so both kept their stake. To be honest, they were both too well schooled for bare knuckle. Couldn’t touch each other.
