James Toney vs Prince Charles Williams



Toney KOs Williams in the 12th to retain his World Super Middleweight title, the first 6 rounds were the definition of a phone box fight, Toney just laid on the ropes while Williams got his head on his chest and pounded away, the quality lay with Toney, the slipping and countering etc but Williams was outhustling him at times and landing enough to make it close, it actually got a bit boring and repetitive, you knew Toney could make things easier for himself if he got off the ropes, gave himself some room to get his straight shots off but he was content to just lay on ropes and let Williams bang away


The second half things changed slightly bit still a lot of infighting, Toney's quality, defence and punch picking was pulling him away but Williams was still going strong, in the 12 however Toney came out jabbing and landing sharp right hand then with seconds left a top drawer 1/2 had Williams falling down in slow motion for a first class KO

That's one of the fights on my list to watch. I remember watching it at the time on terrestrial channel ITV in the UK, I think they showed it on World of Sport a week later. Jim Watt was co-commentating and suggested that they could've held the fight in a phone box.

- Thankyou, Antonio. Had forgotten what a slugfest Chavez/Rosario was, a slow melting beatdown. Steele's bald spot kept distracting me, but he also did a great job.

As to Toney/Barkley, don't know what you boys are exulting when Iran had won a light hvy title vs Hearns he never defends to drop down to 168 vs Toney. Enters the ring with a busted eye not fit to fight. See first Chavez vs Oscar where he enters the Ring with wicked 1 Inch oozing gash, the same preordained outcome, I mean c'mon!

Iran jumps 40 Lb for his next two fights and never returned to 168 again.

Duran beat a younger Barkley coming off his Epic Hearns KO and would've done the same to Toney had they fought then and enjoyed it even more. The Field that Toney beat was the one who stupidly turned down a Roy Jones offer to instead fight Toney for peanuts, an embarrasing downward spiral that never ended.

Overall, it's like Barkleys mgr was on crack as there is no rhyme or reason to to his career. Tragic end for kid who gave boxing his all only to be exploited to an ignoble end. Our Chauncey in one of his promotions boxed an exhibition with Iran to give him a payday before he passed, a class act that deserves a shout

This fight was a revelation. Having watched Chavez against Pratchett, LaPorte and Lockridge, I didn’t expect this absolute mugging.

I saw the Toney-Barkley fight thinking Iran could pull it..he had beaten Hearns after all....and I enjoy thinking that in boxing, everyone has a chance...but Toney dominated him...

TBH I did...Chapo lived 30 minutes by car from me (then again in Puerto Rico so does everyone else lol) and people kept saying he was gonna win but I kept saying "no te vistas, que no vas!" ("Don;'t get dressed cause you are not going" in other words "it ain't happening") because I just saw something in Chavez that I hadn't seen in anyone else since Wilfredo Gomez in 1981-82 (when I started to pay attention to boxing at age 10) Chavez had that look of intensity, even in his lesser performances like the ones you mentioned.

Sadly, I have to say, I was right...this was one moment where I wished I had been wrong!

Leotis Martin V Sonny Liston.

Liston was old and heavy, but he looked pretty good.

His vaunted jab was in full effect and he seemed really powerful.

Martin moved quite well and jabbed fairly well and looked like he was trying to copy the Ali blueprint for beating Liston, but without Muhammad's talent, but he never really troubled Liston until about the 7th when Sonny's face was bloodied.

Suddenly in the 9th, it was as if Liston's stamina said, "right, that's it, I'm out of here" and Liston had all the fight punched out of him by a Left hook then Martin followed up with a pulverising Joe Louis style short Right that poleaxed Sonny.

No-one smoked Liston like that, not even Ali.

It's a shame Martin had to retire after the fight because it was a tremendous win.

Camacho dominates but Williams put on a hard effort! Having beaten Rafael Limon, Rafael Solis and Rafael Williams back to back to back, it seems Camacho wanted to beat every Rafael in the world at the time! (Nadal, lucky for him, was not born yet if I am correct!)

Montell Griffin vs James Toney 1+2



Griffin beats Toney by close MD in a non title Light Heavyweight fight, not a classic, both guys making each other miss with most punches thrown, Toney made Griffin do a funny dance after walking him on to a short right hand in the 3rd and Griffin had Toney falling back into the ropes after catching him with a left in round 7, apart from that there wasnt else that happened, Griffin's most effective shot was the left hook upstairs and Toney's was left downstairs, 2 skilled boxers and i think they just cancelled each other out



Griffin wins the rematch as well, this time by UD, it was another boring technical fight, i thought Toney done more than enough to win, pretty much all the eye catching shots that landed came from him although not many in all fairness, one judge gave Toney 1 round which was a travesty, I struggle to sympathize with Toney as his inability to work 3 minutes of every round let him down again, Griffin never landed much clean at all, boring fight same as first one, nearly every round a pick em

Jessie Magdaleno- Isaac Dogboe

I know it’s quite recent but I’d forgot what a good fight it was.
I’m a fan of Dogboe but thought Magdaleno would of out-boxed him.

Dogboe overcame a knockdown to slowly wear Magdaleno down and hurt him. Great performance from Dogboe which I think will end up being his career defining fight.

Utterly magnificent slugfest.

Round 1 alone was blistering and it never let up right up until the fifth when it ended.

Just watching this. Dogboe really stiffened Magdaleno’s legs with the right hand at the end of the first. Jessie had very stiff knees walking back to the corner.

His fight with Holyfield was also a barnstormer.

Toney beats Ruiz by UD to become World Heavyweight champion (later changed to NC because Toney pissed hot) crap fight played out exactly how id expect a fight between these 2, messy, not a lot of clean action, Ruiz stwrred off trying to use his jab, keep things at range, Toney done a great job of making him miss but didnt always make him pay, Toney would shoot out the right hand, that was his best shot, he had Ruiz down in 7th from a right ,there wasnt a lot of work from either man, Ruiz probably showed more effort than usual but didnt land much clean, Toney was happy to counter occasionally and steal a decision
