Bust eye sockets

Post by Noxy »

I'm watching a few IFL interviews. It just occurred to me, broken eye sockets seem to be occurring more now - Brook twice, Dubois, BJS now. You never used to hear about them. At least it seems that way to me. I wonder if that means people are hitting harder now, or maybe I'm reading too much into it.

They aren’t common but damaged eyes in boxing has been around for ages. Whether it be a fractured orbital bone or a detached retina. The latter is game over the former can be repaired but you’re always susceptible after.

Tiny he is being ironic. He's taking the piss out of all the A-holes who believe a fighter should risk blindness or even death rather than concede defeat because of a bad injury.

What is it with us Brits and our orbital weakness? Must be all our roundabouts :D

I know a bit about head injury, so I'll speak to this. It's not likely to cause a brain concussion.....and that about the best that can be said about a busted orbital. And during some of the post fight closeups, it clearly appeared to be broken....there was a distinct valley below his right eye. If BJS would have chosen to continue, those bones could well have worked their way out of the skin so you could get a nice closed circuit view at just what bits of a broken skull look like....... And I think Canelo would have been happy to oblige. BJS corner made the right decision.

Also...IF he could have dealt with the rather excruciating pain....the eye itself would be very vulnerable as that area continued to absorb incoming, with the freshly compromised structural support around the eye and the adjoining ligaments and tissues. You really couldn't rule out the possibility of a career ending moment in the following round or two....all the while his vision becoming more and more compromised, allowing Canelo to just continue his rather brutal and precise engineering.

It was clear the very second of the 8th? round where it was broken, BJS whole body language shifted.
Funny how something broken inside your skull can up your anxiety level...especially when what did it has a license to continue pounding on your skull until you make a voluntary decision to abort the incoming.

BJS will live to fight another day.....with healing as good as new quite likely. BUT if that area would have taken additional trauma and the compromised area become more and more complexly broken down over the next 3 minutes of Canelo's handywork....yeah...nah.....could be a career ender.....

I do see that we have at least one fan of an old Roman Coliseum style Lion Feast....... Which is exactly what would have been on the menu over the next few rounds had Alvarez been allowed out of the gates to pursue BJS for another round or two.

For the record, no one here wants to see anyone, including BJS get permanently hurt in the ring. We are ridiculing him for exactly what he was ridiculing DDD about when his orbital bone was damaged. If you can't see that, well, that's too bad.

I wonder about the statistics -- whether it is occurring more now, or we're just hearing about it more than in the past.

From what I see, it is a pretty common injury in boxing though. Happens in other sports -- like baseball -- too.

Exactly. I don't know what it is with these people. Whether it's machismo, sociopathic tendencies leading to lack of empathy, or good honest dumb-fuckery leading to lack of imagination, but they all sing a different song when it happens to them - BJS being a prime example. It really came back to bite him only not on the arse.

Of course most of the critics wouldn't dream of getting punched in the face for a living. Neither would I for that matter but at least I respect those who have what it takes, and would never accuse a damaged fighter of cowardice for choosing to live to fight another day.

Fair enough. You reap what you sow and Billy Joe deserves to be made to look a dick for what he said. A decent showing from him in the ring though.

It was entirety predictable though. He and Canelo might be comparable for pure boxing skill, but in terms of relative power, one carries a Deringer and the other, an elephant-gun.

Great post. We've seen it with Brook and Dubois previously. Extremely tough men breaking down as their body goes into shock.

Anyone who has not experienced this can count themselves fortunate. In these times of physical trauma it's virtually impossible to remain responsible for your actions as your subconscious shuts you down for your own protection.

I'm guessing it will be mainly those who may suffer a toilet malfunction under FAR less physical provocation that will be the loudest to decry Saunders - as they did Brook and Dubois previously.

Saunders himself will now know better.

For sure Canelo can hit hard but it looked as if Saunders accidentally ducked into the blow. A real shame as I thought he was getting on top of the rapidly tiring beef lover.

Yes fine post BoxBuzz. I wouldn't mind so much Thomas if were only the types you so eloquently describe who are doing the decrying, but quite often it's other boxers ffs who frankly I would have expected to have a far greater understanding and empathy.

The point you made about Billy Joe ducking into the uppercut is right, but I think it was anticipated by Canelo after watching and learning where his opponent 's head was likely to be. It was a terrific shot anyway magnified by Billy Joe's head travelling in the opposite direction. A head on collision half literally.

you can't continue to fight with a broken/cracked orbital bone/severly damaged eye socket... whatever it was.

if your jaw is dislocated/broken and you're crazy you can try to protect it by moving, punching covering up like ali or arthur abraham did.

with a fucked up eye like that there is just no going on. period.

props to canelo for his precision and power. one punch ended the fight.

This should end any talk of BJS quitting.

Now it remains to be seen if he can come back from this.

Well done Mark Tibbs, but it's high time referees were trained to recognise these types of injuries and stop the fights before something horrific happens and the entire sport becomes under threat.
