what if bruce lee was a boxer instead of a martial artist?
ok guys. imagine if bruce lee had trained to be a boxer instead of getting into martial arts. with his devotion to training, speed and power, i say that he would have been an all time great.
my guess is that at age twenty, he would have started out as at 122# and by age 30 topped out at 135-140. consider the era and the boxers from that time.
born in 1940, he would have started out in 1959-60. his height was about 5-7 and his reach was around 69". kick it around a little bit and let me know pro or con what you think?

Let me in here. Bruce Lee was a movie star not a fighter.
trained as a youth in wing Chung under Yip Man who didnt even consider Lee one of his top students.
Lee never fought anyone of note. He was a master showman and the creator of his own fighting style called Jeet Kune Do.
His popularity also stemmed from the fact that his one with the universe new age "Eastern style philosophy was a big hit in the late 60s early 70s.
He had I believe very good athleticism and probably could have been a decent boxer but it takes alot more then just speed.

Thank you expug.
Over the years I'v asked many Bruce Lee fans either face to face or over the Internet "Who did Bruce Lee ever beat?" and I have never got a reasonable answer.
The only documented 'fight' I've heard Lee getting into was when Gene Labelle smacked him silly backstage during the filming of I think The Green Hornet.
Yep, I guess that was part of the begining of his legend. The Kung -Fu expert was pissed Lee was teaching non Chinese the ancient secrets and what not.
The challenge was thrown down that if Lee loses to this expert ,then he can no longer teach.
Lee beat him but was dissapointed in his own performance and rededicated himself to his training and started Jeet kune Do. Who knows if any of this is true.
Ive been teaching Martial Arts for a decade now and I have heard so many stories its ridiculous. Not just about Lee but lots of other experts as well. All I know is , like they say in rodeo, "there never was a horse that couldnt be rode and there never was a rider that couldnt be throwed".

Yeah , all I got with my account there is what I read somewhere and heard.
It was a strange period in the history of Martial Arts. Here in Chicago we had the green or black dragon society wars in which dojos were going at it . A guy by the name of John Keehan better known as Count Dante led an attack on another dojo somebody was killed with a spear someone was maimed it was a wild time.
Read up if you can Decagon on this Count Dante carachter . My guess is you have heard of him.
wild wild stuff.

I read that article . I found Wongs account very interesting. I must have read Linda Lees story of the fight somewhere because that is pretty much what I posted.
I lean strongly towards Wongs version largely because Lee refused to meet him publicly in a rematch. Wong would probably have smoked him.
I know Lebell would have clowned him . I think he did but Lebell says he just picked him up and ran around with him like a doll.
Gene is not a guy to go running people down as far as I know.

Movies my friend movies. Yes he had speed, but against what. He was never teseted in an environment like a pro boxer. He had speed, until you put him against a Ray Leonard, Robinson etc. They had tested and proved speed. Lee had pitter patter fits!!!!!!.AndreWardFan2006 wrote:Bruce Lee is an absolute savage. Nobody can compete with his speed, everyone knows it. It's legendary.
Lee had he started in boxing may have been very good, may have been very poor. Hard to tell, but to say he was a savage and had speed faster than top boxers is stretching it a bit too far.
Bruce Lee was an actor, Could he take a punch, Would he have the heart to fight through adversary.
I don't believe any of the hype around this guy he looked good in Movies but so does Van Dam, Jackie Chan Chuck Norris etc.
BRUCE LEE NEVER FOUGHT IN THE RING AND NEVER EVEN BEAT ANYONE IN A KICK BOXING FIGHT SO HOW THE FUCCK CAN HE BE COMPARED WITH MAYWEATHER, IT IS A JOKE.

Which well know martial artists elbows did Bruce Lee snap in fights?Crease wrote:Yep, Bruce Lee as "an actor"...
BTW, I don't believe that Lee would have been a great boxer, I think he would get frustrated when a decent fighter smacked him hard across the jaw and start snapping elbows all around him...
Then he would just get disqualified...
Pity.
Are there any films of this?
Bruce Lee was an actor ...

I find the thread amusing,I was talking , over a cup of tea to a former World Karate champ, and a World bronze medalist. The idea was to wind them up by telling them Lee would not have made it at Boxing. They looked at each other and gave me a strange look, scrap Lee never competed He was an actor, Its all bollocks. I thanked them for the information.

That’s complete Bs! Bruce had 3 amateur boxing matches becoming Hong Kong Schoolboy champion. He had many wing Chun fights and also fought many challenges in America. He beat black belts and was a tutor to Chuck Norris, Joe Lewis, Mike Stone and Louis Delgado.
Yip man rated Bruce as around the fifth best in wing Chun when he left for the states aged 18. He travelled back to Hong Kong on a number of occasions and each time was better and would spar with those rated above him. The last time he went back to spar he sparred the best in the kwoon and from the look on Yip mans face he knew he had gotten the better of the guy. He surpassed the wing Chun guys cos JKD is far superior.

Re:
Lee was extremely fast. But I've seen him on a heavy bag, his power with boxing gloves was rather ordinary. Could have made a good light weight. His arms were rather long. Not sure how durable he was our how far he could keep up the pace at 100% though.AndreWardFan2006 wrote: ↑07 Jul 2006, 20:39 Bruce Lee had the fastes hands i've ever seen. I don't think Floyd Mayweather Jr. could even match his jab.

Lee is and always will be the biggest myth of the 20th century.
