Re: Bust eye sockets
quitting, and whether a quit was justified are 2 different things
Re: Bust eye sockets
True tearns, the doctor / ref should have stopped it.
They do seem a bit common lately - 4 high profile ones.
Didn't Brook get a plate in after Golovkin, and then got the other one busted v Spence.
You can't say they don't earn their money in there. And on world stage, it sure must be humbling.

Re: Bust eye sockets
I'd just rather people use a less pejorative term. "Quit", "Quitter", or "Quitting" just sounds so feeble, so inadequate even if it is accurate by definition. A fighter who suffers serious damage which threatens to end their career, their ability to ever recover should they elect to continue, even threatens to end their life in the worst cases, doesn't deserve to have their reputation tarnished with a miserable, derogatory word like"quit". It's a shitty word.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑11 May 2021, 13:47 quitting, and whether a quit was justified are 2 different things

Settle down Oogie, I already agreed with you on the point that BJS deserved stick, but lets not pretend there aren't people who would have called him a quitter anyway, look at the sh*t that Dubois got after the Joyce fight after suffering a similar injury.
If I still haven't made it clear yet, I was not having a pop at you, I fully understand your reasoning.

Didn't Inoue suffer the injury in his fight with Donaire? He boxed on, some fighters do, some fighters don't. It's a matter of choice and nobody can really say a fighter should continue.Enlightened-One wrote: ↑12 May 2021, 04:44Orbital fractures are as rare as unicorn șħĩṫ!Noxy wrote: ↑09 May 2021, 15:17 I'm watching a few IFL interviews. Clearly some boxers have boxed on with the injury that BJS suffered (or worse). He chose not to but he has the right to do that. Just wish he hadn't mouthed off about other fighters and claimed he would never quit but then actually did what he had chastised Dubois for.

Naoya Inoue did indeed suffer an orbital fracture. So we can already name about a dozen fighters that have suffered these sort of injuries.Monzon83 wrote: ↑12 May 2021, 07:30Didn't Inoue suffer the injury in his fight with Donaire? Clearly some boxers have boxed on with the injury that BJS suffered (or worse). He chose not to but he has the right to do that.
That said, I'm guessing (like every other sort of injury) there are varying degrees of severity of orbital fractures, which meant that some fighters could continue, but others couldn't.
Billy Joe's cheekbone was collapsed to the point his eyeball was no longer visible. And from a layman's perspective, Saunders injury seemed outrageously bad.
However, a lot of fight fans are thick fṹḉkḛṛș!
They ignorantly assume that all injuries are the same. "One fractured orbital bone injury cannot possibly be worse than another!"
So let's imagine a scenario where fighters A and B endure some form of trauma that results in their orbital sockets being fractured.
Therefore, if fighter A boxed on, but fighter B refused to continue, then ignorant fight fans unfairly accuse fighter B of being mentally frail and will also ridicule him to high heavens.
At the end of the day, boxing is only a sport. There's much more to life than losing a sporting event.
Re: Bust eye sockets
Not only that, but Canelo was turning up the heat in round 8. If a fully firing BJS was struggling to keep pace with this highly skilled, freakish puncher, who was chasing him down, how do his critics imagine round 9 was likely to play out with a tiring, shell-shocked, demoralised, one-eyed, fighter trying desperately to protect his stoved-in eye-socket and cheekbone?
BJS was foolish to criticize Daniel Dubois. I'd like to believe he is a wiser man who has learnt a lesson. I'd like to but I'm not sure that I do.![[icon_e_biggrin.gif] :D](./images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif)

you can't continue to fight with a broken/cracked orbital bone/severly damaged eye socket... whatever it was.
if your jaw is dislocated/broken and you're crazy you can try to protect it by moving, punching covering up like ali or arthur abraham did.
with a fucked up eye like that there is just no going on. period.
props to canelo for his precision and power. one punch ended the fight.

Re: Bust eye sockets
that was a hard jab, the knuckle not the flat front of the glove went directly in the already shut swollen eye, damaged some nerve for sure if it hopefully didn't even crack or broke something.
his delayed reaction clearly showed the pain, there's no two ways of "handling" something like that, he took the knee cause he had to.
that he got up the moment he was counted out didn't look good but it was a reflex & the next punches from joyce would've targeted that damaged eye again and he wouldn't have even seen them.
so where is the sense in fighting on, risk permanent damage just so the same idiots that now call him weak and a quitter could babble shit about him being a warrior and going out on his shield. people who's opinions he shouldn't give a flying duck anyways.

Re: Bust eye sockets
True enough but it's never good in a boxing sense is it? BJS does deserve to get abuse for a lot of the things he's said and done, but in the interest of fairplay (I was going to say 'truth and accuracy' but I didn't actually see/hear the interview) I read that what he said was along the lines of "Fair enough if Daniel Dubois had a genuine serious injury but I don't think he was badly hurt"‘skanksta wrote: ↑13 May 2021, 11:05yeah - semantics makes it such a loaded word.candyslim wrote: ↑11 May 2021, 18:39I'd just rather people use a less pejorative term. If that is roughly what he said, and I can't say one way or the other, then this would obviously have been said before the full extent of DDD's injury was known. That's still pretty disrespectful, but if correctly reported, it's not the same as saying Dubois should have continued fighting with a broken eye socket as is widely understood.

You do have to be mindful of the fact that not everybody reads the entire thread even when its only two pages long, not everybody even reads the whole post, they sort of skim-read to get the gist, and not everybody can recognize irony if it bit 'em on the arse. I don't know which category your critics fit into

You idiot. These aren’t the days where Sugar Ray Robinson couldn’t feed his family for a month after a fight if he lost. In those days, they epitomized fighting to the death because in those times, not winning almost meant death or at least not being able to provide for his family. These days, a big fight like this means that BJS’s kid’s kids are set for life. If you had 8 million dollars to spend the next morning after the fight, I guarantee your bigoted ass would crumble when you felt your eye socket break in two places. It’s a miserable injury and life changing for his future in normal life. You are just the kind of people that I’d love to smack over and over and over again. But I know you will never crawl out of your basement to make it possible. And that’s the saddest part of this dickhead.
