How important is a fighters trainer/coach in a fight?

Post by Controversial »

Following on from the BJS thread where Ben Davidson was discussed, I thought it would be interesting to hear general thoughts on trainers/coaches.

Are good trainers/coaches more there as a mental boost for the fighter? How important is it that your trainer is experienced or is it better you have a good bond with them and they know their fighter?

As mentioned on other threads there are examples like Ronnie Davies being in the Eubank corner, did he really help Eubank with tactics, as Eubank always done his own thing, yet Eubank said he wouldn't have anyone else in his corner as he trusted him so much. Much the same with the Calzaghe's, his dad never boxed as far as I'm aware.

So if you are good enough does it really matter who is in your corner? At the end of the day there is only so much a fighter will listen to in-between rounds.

Nigel Benn kept changing trainer after a loss or when he needed a big win. Was strange. Think he went through five or six.

Graham Moughton had him jabbing and boxing. Didn’t work against a natural jabbing boxer in Malinga in that 10-rounder in 92 (iffy dec) so switched to the aggressive Tibbs.

The am trainer is most important. And they never got paid. People would be surprised how many work with their amateur guys still.

Yes Benn had quite a few trainers. Benn 'won' the first 1992 Malinga fight (close and some say lucky to get the nod over 10) but Benn was the clear loser in the rematch.

I assume we are just taking about the actual fight night here ... Depends on the fighter ... I guess some fighters are so good they don’t really need any trainer input at all during a fight ( because they have accumulated such great knowledge themselves over the years)

Someone like RJJ / Floyd ... they had been boxing for 25 years plus when they hit their peak and had great trainers etc along the way . Can’t imagine many people being able to add much during a fight as they could read things so well (especially given they were seldom in close fights)

Then there’s the fact that some fighters are not that great at quickly absorbing instructions and executing then ... which also makes the corner team fairly worthless :)

Then there are the fighters who think they know it all but don’t - who don’t listen to their corner either .. so again corner team not adding anything during the fight other than giving water :)

Difficult to argue with the results, especially with regard to his defence.

I think that post fight Canelo praised Eddy for his round by round advice, which I suspect was to play a bit of possum, at least in the 7th when he appeared to be missing a la LeMieux and appeared to be tiring, luring BJS into the decisive blow.

I would’ve made a fortune on that had Malinga not looked shit against Trevor Ambrose. Ray Webb and Andy Flute both mentioned Benn falling over his own punches (as if his laces were undone) in Tenerife before the comeback after McClellan and the Bruno undercard - basically saying he was shot to bits now post-McClellan.
