Lets face it he'll prob get to a 'world title' without having a proper fight... I can see him fighting for a vacant wbu title in about 18 months against someone 30+ who is naturally a division below him... all in all its a joke really.... I personally dont view him as a serious boxer anymore... this sort of thing is going to kill boxing imo...

In my opinion he would have been starting from a far better base.
I dont think he would get either Gold or Silver at the European Championships on at the moment.
If you replace Frankie Gavin with Amir Khan and see what Gavin will have to face in the tournament.

Khan had a good draw in the Olympics, say that Khan had drawn Kindelan in the first round, what would Khan be to the World?

He would have not been pressured by the british press into turning pro by the british press and been in a far better position in terms of his potencial futour

I agree with you, but Khan and his team are afraid of failure. The reason they pulled out of the ABA's, the reason he is no longer an Amateur.

You can not pick your opponent if the major tournaments. You can face the best in the world in the first round and they will be your weight. I can name atleast 6 amateurs at Khans weight that would destroy him, and he cant afford to risk his ££££. So he will try to fool the World by fighting FW picked fighters.
I so hope it does not end up the same way as Audley Harrison.

Its the damn british press when it comes down to it Kahn realy could have done without having to be afraid of loosing. He should have been allowed to be what he was a promising ametre.

I didn't see his last fight (was in france) but from a lot of the other fights Iv seen I have noticed he is failing on some of his basics for example when he gets over enthusiastic with opening up he leaves his chin up rather than tucked down. A bit of time in the ametres mite have sorted that out. Anyone notice if he is still doing that.

He still fights as an Amateur boxer, Darren Barker f#c#ed up in the week against Conroy McIntosh, he came out a winner in the end but the Amateur Champion was lucky to make it past the 2nd round!

There have been some rave reviews about him... He was fighting a fairly aggressive style in the Commonwealths and was getting quite badly outboxed untill the opponent badly ran out of Gas. He scraped the win, but Neily and Woodhall were quite disgusted with the ref cause the opponent was so out of gas he was holding for dear life. The ref didn't even dock a point but IMO should have thrown him out.

Neilly comments that the opponent should never be allowed to step into a boxing ring again was a bit much... he did win the Silver FFS.

I didn't see that much of the Commonwealth Games boxing, to be honest. But Anderson was one of the few I did see a bit of. And my first thought was 'Here's a guy who can fight like a pro'.

I regard Amateur boxing as having only the merest relation to actual boxing these days, which is probably why Anderson is one of the few fighters I saw who stick in my memory. Can't possibly make any prediction as to what he'll do as a pro, but he looked pretty heavy-handed, and full of heart. And he now has both Collins and Benn offering advice. I look forward to seeing him in the paid ranks.

Is that not a bit harsh? You probably know more than me, but didn't Khan beat the European Champ (the Bulgarian whose name escapes me) in the second round, and then stopped the Korean fella (Quarter-finalist in the worlds?) after that?

Not saying the bloke is perfect, far from it. And no doubt he'd have lost to Kindelan in the first round, had the draw panned out that way. But I was under the impression he beat some decent amateurs on his way to the final.

Bear in mind I know next to nothing about the amateur scene, so please don't shoot me down too badly if I'm wrong.

Kinderlin did score more against kahn than anyone else. I think the point that ABA was making though was that Kahn's carrer would have panned out differently and he is being somewhat over rated in part cos he was in the right half of the draw.

Ah yes, I see your point there. Still, right half of the draw or not, you can't deny he had some good wins in Athens. But yes, it could have been very different with a different first round draw.

as a non-brit, i am amazed how many of amir's countrymen have turned on him so quickly, for a somewhat arrogant but very realistic assessment of what his chances would be in 2008 OG!! in my humble opinion as an outsider, is it really that FAR-FETCHED for a guy who won silver at 17 and avenged the loss to the veteran gold medalist before turning pro to be the betting favorite for 2008?!? :o

i feel bad for the guy...i daresay, if he was american, mexican or latin american...he wouldnt be getting pilloried like this by his OWN COUNTRYMEN for a somewhat boastful but in NO WAY unrealistic statement!

his arrogance pales in comparison to that of a young cassius clay/muhammad ali...who, to my understanding, historically has had & continues to have demigod status in the UK!!

Ali was and still is a god to most british fans, simply because he talked the talk and walked the walk. He did'nt turn pro and fight middleweights he fought guys his own size.

Khan is just a bigheaded little plonker, and the unfortunate thing is he will win a WBU title inside two years,

Its the arrogance i dont like, if he was to just get on with it and perform then great.
Saying he would have got Gold is a statement that he can not prove & kind of insulting to the boxer that does get Gold. Audley Harrison talked rubbish and see what happend, he thought he was to good for Brittish titles and such.
Eubank, Ali, Hammed all talked it up, but they all followed it up by performing in the ring.

We know Khan has a gift but being to big for your boots makes everyone want you to trip over!

All Khan is doing is putting pressure on himself. Time will tell :TU:

I think everyone needs to cut Khan a little slack. As has already been said he's a unbeaten boxer being fed apponents for the most part just to provide good looking stoppages, a celeb, plenty of money and feted by the media - he's also 19. If thats not going to change even the most down to earth kid into a bit of an arsehole nothing will. Remember what arrogant twats most of us were at that age (i know i was).
I say try and show a little patience and understanding withhold judgement for now. Let's hope the level of competition is raised so that things steadily get tougher for him so he becomes sensible beyond his years before he trips up. If he's acting like this in his mid 20's let rip.

you dont think he is capable of winning a legit world title?!? :o

even if he settles for a pseudo-title like wbu in early career like hatton did, he will DEFINITELY capture a major belt (wbc, wbc, ibf) by age 22 or 23 if not before!!

i wouldnt say its much of a stretch...name me even one guy under age 20 who has a BETTER chance of winning a major world belt than amir khan?!? he is most likely the best young prospect in the game right now & i am just saying he is not getting enuf respect from his countrymen at this forum!! at least not in THIS thread!!

I don't think there is a case of people not respecting his talent or his chances on this thread. I like the kid. The issue hear is (1) is he going about this in the right way (2) is he being over arrogant? I infact don't think he is over arogent I think thats sports network press team however I do think he would have done better having stayed ametre for which I blame the british press as much as I blaim him as anytime he lost or was even KDed as an ametre it hit his marketablity.

To be fair, shoutout2u, there are a lot of people who are very impressed with Khan. I'm one of them: Whilst I recognise that he has faults, I also think that, even at 19, he has world-class handspeed and accuracy.

The trouble is, he's being showcased as top of the bill, on prime-time T.V., and there are press releases that are portraying him in a negative light. It doesn't matter if these press releases are actually Khan's words, they're being released in his name. And they're turning a lot of people off.

It may not be fair, but the shadow of Audley Harrison looms large in these matters. Hopefully Amir can concentrate on fighting, because if he does that, he really can achieve something. He has that God-given talent, it's his to waste.
