tbh
I see matchroom just getting bigger and stronger with or without sky .
2025 at the earliest
I really think hes got to thank Tom Saunders and Tyson Fury alot for that. Also having a big uk card the week before helped. Remember Sky indirectly plugging Benn vs Eubank 2 on the Bruno vs Lewis bill.....while Kugan and Michelle were interviewing Haye about Chisora, might as well get his views on Bjs.maverick23 wrote: ↑14 May 2021, 13:37He did a good job with the Canelo vs BJS show I thought in both the US and the U.K.
I think Tom Saunders helped, as did Tyson, as did Billy Joe but I also thought Canelo came out of his shell quite a bit in the build up.stujones wrote: ↑14 May 2021, 15:55I really think hes got to thank Tom Saunders and Tyson Fury alot for that. The Callum Smith fight also helped....That didn't seem to do nearly as well but it was promoted differently....Eddie felt more on Callums side, this was as much about Canelo as it was bjs from Eddie's side. Plus Canelos dominant display against a bigger, slower guy made the experts feel a "slicker" "faster" guy was the ONLY guy to beat him....Plant will be a much harder sell irrespective of the history that beckons.
On paper at least Callum was a sterner test and should have done at least as well....I would say Callum was at least well known as Bjs in say October 2020. Tom and Tyson and the fact that Canelo beat up a polar opposite in Smith really helped the bjs hype
Yeah, whilst Matchroom deserve a lot of credit - the Canelo documentary on the BEEB - and its title was so fitting... and getting Canelo to speak in English on the Hearn podcast was a stroke of genius (and how well did Canelo speak in English!) - but there were a lot of comfounding variables not in matchroom control really that also helped it. Can't overly praise Eddie on this one, he spent most of the promotion in the UK promoting and being part of the Sky PPV.maverick23 wrote: ↑14 May 2021, 16:08I think Tom Saunders helped, as did Tyson, as did Billy Joe but I also thought Canelo came out of his shell quite a bit in the build up.stujones wrote: ↑14 May 2021, 15:55I really think hes got to thank Tom Saunders and Tyson Fury alot for that. Randomly a guy at work who doesn’t usually watch much boxing at all subscribed to DAZN for it because he’d seen the Canelo doc on the BBC, saw Billy Joe playing the fool in the build and wanted to see it. The amount of views/publicity it had on YouTube and social media was crazy.
Agreed re: the threats from Team Saunders really helping sell the fight. I think something that Matchroom have done better than anyone in the pandemic is giving loads of access to fighters to the media. I subscribe to 4 or 5 boxing YouTube channels and I can’t remember a week where’s there’s been as much content or as many views (outside of YouTube fights) as there was last week.stujones wrote: ↑14 May 2021, 17:10Yeah, whilst Matchroom deserve a lot of credit - the Canelo documentary on the BEEB - and its title was so fitting... and getting Canelo to speak in English on the Hearn podcast was a stroke of genius (and how well did Canelo speak in English!) - but there were a lot of comfounding variables not in matchroom control really that also helped it. The ring business and the threats of the pull out did amazing business - probably BJS saw how Chisora's hideous threat also drum up the social medial views and probable buys the week before. Both made big headlines on the BBC boxing page.
I will say - I think the Costello and Bunce podcast is quite possibly the biggest selling aspect for any boxing promoter - I know loads of casuals who listen to that (actually in the toilet to get some peace from the kids some of my friends say).
