The last time a Rocky movie came out was when I was 5yrs old...it's like seeing your child hood hero come back from the grave.
I hope that this movie will be alot better than the last one, though I didn't think it was too bad a film, though was retarded in some places.
The whole concept of the computer fight, and Balboa wanting to start off on a small tank town comeback, to being offered a shot at the reigning champion because of the huge talk surrounding the computer fight, makes it really sound like a modern type of film and gives the whole Balboa storyline some backbone---because this is more or less a WHAT IF? circumstance than in the last movies where Rocky defies the odds and everybody has a heart felt experience as Rocky fights back, because the odds in this film are so against Rocky, it is almost the same odds if not more than it would have been in the very first movie when he went up against Apollo Creed.

Agreed. I think this movie is more or less like a follow up, though fictional, of what could have been between Ali and Marciano.
The whole thing with the actual computer fight thing, that I don't get myself, is how Ali could be so offended by the outcome, yet when he was asked by several people of Marciano he talked up his abilities like he was invincible---I still remember to this day that Ali did a show with Howard Cosell and asked Ali how he believed he would have faired against former champions, and when it came to Marciano all Ali could say was "I wont't talk about him. He was my friend, I won't talk of the dead."
Is weird though, how in 1965 Cosell, Ali, Patterson, Chuvalo and Marciano was all viewing Chuvalo's fight with Patterson, and all Ali could do was sing the praises of Marciano, that if Marciano wanted to he could beat both Patterson and Chuvalo all in the same day. Makes no sense to me.
I would like to do another Marciano thread, but seeing the heat from everybody, quoting from one individual they all seemed "concerned by the Marciano frequency" in this forum...so when it dies down a bit, I'll make another one, more or less in light of this particular circumstance.

Gotta say, I saw the trailer and....
Sure, the workut montage looks cool. Almost as good as the sequence from Rocky 4.
However, I must say that Antonio Tarver has to be the worst antagonist of all of the former five Rocky movies.
He is not intimidating at all.
Rocky and Rocky II - Carl Weathers looked like an athlete years ahead of the '70s. He looked strong, fast, and extreamly athletic. Looked like a decathlete.
Rocky III - Mr. T. He was a beast back then.
Rocky IV - Dolf Lungren. Doesn't look too dissimilar to either of the Klitschkos now.
Rocky V - They used an actual tough-man/green professional heaveyweight. Looked raw and strong...convincing for the part.
Rocky VI - has the antagonist devolved that much? Tarver looks like a small college point guard. He simply does not look like a threat to a 60 year old Rocky (the character, not Stallone playing him). I have only seen the trailer, but I can't notice the 40 pounds of muscle that are rumored that he put on for the movie.

I think Tarver isn't really being an antagonist in this part...from what I understand he is just a Heavyweight champion in a era that is at it's weakest who is undervalued and under-appreciated, he is cocky in his abilities, but he isn't really a bad guy. He is just looking for respect, and the computer fight bruised his ego even further, and the whole "rematch of the computer fight" is just his own way to prove he is a genuine fighter.
I think this will be an entirely different Rocky movie than any of the previous five, and I think that's a good thing, because using the same old formulas over and over get harder and harder to sell.

IRM, you nailed this one on the head, that is exactly the senario I was picturing.IrishRufusMurphy wrote:I think Tarver isn't really being an antagonist in this part...from what I understand he is just a Heavyweight champion in a era that is at it's weakest who is undervalued and under-appreciated, he is cocky in his abilities, but he isn't really a bad guy. I heard that they will be replaying it in a month or so. When they finish the series of about 8 or so they will re play them.IrishRufusMurphy wrote:speaking of Marciano...anyone know when the fawk are they gonna re-play that RINGSIDE special on him again? I missed it the first time and can't ever find a schedule that mentions it.

Yeah, Carl Weathers looked a natural when he was training in Rocky 2. Just the way he hit the bag, skipped, things like that, he did it well, and he had a good physique to with all of that!
Mr T training session in Rocky 3 is great. See him when he doing pull-ups; man, he had some back muscles, and he was training in a proper shitty, dingy, stinking gym. Rocky 3 is my favourite of the Rocky movies.
Rocky 6 looks better than I thought it would do, and I'll be going to see it. I've seen the rest, and I gotta say: Rocky 5 was one of the worst movies I've seen!

Mason "The Line" Dixon is, more or less, like any of the Heavyweight champions currently in the division. He's a man who is the 'best' of the Heavyweights in an era dry in talent and on the decline in popularity, much like how the Heavyweight division is in real life as well.
That is what Stallone was banking on in this film, to have a champion who is unappreciated and is scoffed by writers and fans, due to lack of quality opposition, and to 'spark' back interest to the division ESPN runs a computer tournament, where Rocky Balboa faces Mason Dixon in the end, and "wins" by knock-out.
This visibly bruises Dixon's ego and his pride, as he is far more dismissed as just another 'notch' on the Balboa legend. Rocky on the other hand, sees the fight and makes him wonder if he still could beat some fighters, so he tries to have a come-back, but not against quality opposition, just merely local fighters.
Word manages to catch the ears of Dixon's promoters, and since the general public tuned in by vast numbers to see the computer-fight on ESPN and has them curious as to who would really win, offers Rocky a fight with Dixon (a 12 round exhibition from what I understand), to which Rocky agrees and the whole scenario of the "Rematch of the Computer Fight" goes under-way.
Dixon isn't a heel or a bad guy or an antagonist in my opinion for this film, he's just trying to prove he has a rightful place in history.
