Fray Bentos wrote: 13 May 2021, 20:01 Saunders is being judged by his own words - simple as that really. When Dubois quit, I was very sympathetic and supportive and truly believe he did the right thing, I do believe that Saunders did the right thing also but I have no sympathy for him because he has been an utter arse all these years and got away with it the vast majority of the time.

If he came out and said 'I said previously that I would die in the ring than quit but now I realise that my health and my family and my future comes first and that I now realise that my previous statements about other fighters and myself were lacking in the insight I have now and I retract these words totally' then that would go a long way to redeeming himself.

But it doesn't seem he is going to do that - he is going to try and ride it out and lie through his teeth (or get his team to do it on his behalf...) if his team or Saunders are reading this, that would be a really bad idea and he might as well say goodbye to his boxing career in the UK. I think we are all sick to the back teeth of Billy Joe Saunders and his illusions and listening to them.

And what has been said on here is nothing to what Fernando Vargas has said - which I thought was a bit over the top but he has been there and has proved he has the heart of a lion so maybe he has more right to his very scathing views.

Saunders and Davison can come out and say that he wanted to continue but he never threw a punch after the injury and a lot of people looking at him walking back to the corner and sitting down have made their own judgement - he quit. Tibbs came out and did an interview with Radio Raheem in which he said he didn't see what he needed to see to send Saunders out. My understanding is that Tibbs was the main man in the corner, not Ben. Tibbs doesn't strike me as a yes-man and although he stopped short of saying Saunders quit, he kept it real and said that Saunders body language wasn't conducive to him getting sent out for another round. This contradicts what Davison is now saying.
The most important person who has yet to speak is Saunders and what he has to say will depend if he has a future in boxing. You're right that Tibbs and Saunders are contradicting themselves but until Saunders speaks then it will be up in the air for some time to come.

I just don't think Saunders is smart enough to take the high road and will basically try and lie his way out of it - not that there will be any takers outside his family and inner circle - and even then...

FFS Carlos he is not a politician looking for elected office.

He got what we politely call 'comeuppance'. Not endorsing any of his behaviour, over the years, but it got boxing social media chatting and in a frenzy. What you think of the fella as a human being seems to take prevalence and has been paid back especially with the good grace from DDD (that's class).

He got his cash in fight and went out with a genuine injury against the P4P number 1. Thought he did well up until the eye socket/cheekbone went....but I think his opponent may have did that.

As Dave Coldwell said top MMA fighters tap out rather than get an arm or leg broken. They quit and did Billy Joe did too. He got a life ahead of him with Millions in the bank. Job done retirement secured and he may well be exactly the same person or something different. Who knows.

Disagree with that Stick, what comes out of his mouth is important if he wants to put bums on seats in the UK again, what marquee value does he hold now? Nothing really, he isn't particularly exciting or interesting to watch - none of his fights are edge-of-your-seat stuff and mix that in with his unlikeable personality - then he has a hill to climb.

Even as world champion - he wasn't a true top of the bill fighter except at the Stevenage Leisure Centre or wherever he topped the bill - I mean, he can say what he likes but people don't forget easy, I personally don't give a shit but if he wants to continue fighting then him brazing it out and basically telling everyone he was ready to fight on when we all know that's a lie
is a bad idea, if he retires and wants to tell that to himself or anyone who wants to listen then fine. It won't matter - it will all depend if he wants to fight on again or retire, count his money and laugh.

I haven't read one keyboard Rambo in any of the discussions stating they would - but know of a certain self styled Rambo stating he would .. but didn't.
Well he found out he wasn't as tough as he thought he was, so what? He's still tougher than the posters on here who are slagging him for pulling out of a fight with a serious injury.

Can't see the difference between BJS pulling DDD down and the posters on here for pulling BJS down when none of us(give or take a couple of ex pros on here) would have an earthly of carrying on a fight with a facial fracture of this nature.

Pots and kettles works both ways.
In boxing there are written rules, and unwritten rules.

I, and most other posters here have not chosen boxing as a career .. so those rules don't apply to us. I it's silly to assume we would.

If Lewis Hamilton drove no faster than 80mph because he didn't feel it safe to go any faster, would it be justified because most of us don't feel safe or brave enough to drive faster?

Of course not - Hamilton is a pro driver who is expected to be brave enough to drive at 180mph.
BJS himself assumed he was brave enough to fight through injury .. he failed the unwritten rule he had for himself, and the unwritten rule we expected him to show.

MMA & boxing are very different situations. The MMA tapping out is often a slow torturous process. Lots guys are rolled over unconscious - Tony Ferguson had his elbow bent to an impossible angle previously before tapping.
As BJS demonstrated some panic and quit - some endure unbelievable pain before tapping.

I thought we were paying them tens of millions to take the risk of going blind or dying? Boxing will die if fighters keep quitting and grabbing obscene money they don’t deserve.

Yes he quit and he was right to do so. The analogy about fighters in UFC tapping is apt. It’s the smart thing to do.

Something I’ve learned over the years of posting here is that nothing is less significant to a fighters career than opinions on the Boxrec forum.

Not all do. Some fight on and it's only stopped by the ring side physician. Also it's rare to see an MMA fight stopped for an orbital/eye injury. Again the fight tends to continue until the dr stops it.

My last thing on this. I think had he fought out the last 90 seconds and been pulled out the narrative would be a little different.

He threw 1 shot in the last 90 seconds of the 8th round. Pretty much the opposite of going out on his shield.

Thats just nonsense and plain idiotic.

Nobody wants to see anybody blind or dying from their injuries.

The point that BJS was trying to make when he gave his opinion on DDD taking the knee when he quit. Was that some people have got a warrior mentality of never quitting, and swinging away until they are physically (or consciously)unable to swing anymore ... its what he at that time believed/hoped he was like; I guess its what most guys in combat sports hope they are like when that test comes too. And in such cases when a fighter does possess that warrior mentality, Its often said that the fighter needs protecting from himself ... and they most definitely should.

The chips came down and BJS was found seriously wanting; he did what us mere mortals would likely have done, and panicked and quit straight away ... which of course was the sensible thing to do; but we just expected to see the warrior mentality first; he had promised numerous times he possessed it ..

Thats my last word on BJS ... may he disappear into obscurity where he belongs.

I doubt he worried about bums on seats in the UK from here on in mate.

He got the cash in fight he wanted and I suggest he will walk away now.

Dont know or ever met the fella......but it is a good guess he will not worry too much about what any fans/antifans think.

But you are right about what comes out of one's mouth.....very important......especially if you want to follow it seriously/flippantly or anything between.

Why the fvck is Brent Davison spending fight week with Saunders when he's meant to be helping Taylor prepare for the biggest fight of his career? And why didnt Tibbs tell him to fvck off when he's whispering in Saunders ear after the 8th??

Looks a bit amateur hour to me, unless Tibbs wasnt happy with the whole situation leading up to fight night and just gave up with it all when Davison stuck his beak in

Im not a fan of chief seconds not maintaining full control of their corners

Yeah - Davison has Taylor in a monster fight and has Haney in a pretty big fight. No idea why he’s sacking that off to be ringside.

Him sticking his beak in with the corner has really annoyed me. Hopefully Mark received/receives a decent paycheque from fight and sacks off BJS as it’s a bit of a joke situation.

I’m also surprised the commission even let Ben close enough to whisper to Billy Joe.

Davison has clearly said that it was him who made the decision to stop the fight 15 seconds before the end of the round.

Also he stated the reason BJS was shaking his head in the corner as in response to Davison saying he was stopping the fight. Furthermore BJS wanted to fight on and didn't quit.

Davison wasn’t even part of the official corner team though was he? He wouldn’t even have the authority to stop the fight.
