The only guys I’ve heard refer to it as that are Mayweather Jr and Eubank Snr. I agree though that it’s annoying!
Re: The sport of boxing
I remember hearing a lot more recently, especially Hearn. I seem to to remember it being used a bit in America as posted above .maverick23 wrote: ↑16 May 2021, 16:13Does everyone say that?mickey1975 wrote: ↑16 May 2021, 16:09 Why does everyone say this. Mayweather was the first person I noticed saying it regularly. Really annoying phrase.
Re: The sport of boxing
I hardly ever hear that, You play sports, you don't play boxing.

see, now these yoga ladies gonna be thinking they bad asses, cuz 'you dont play yoga'
Re: The sport of boxing
Yes to be grammatically correct it is go boxing, but it always sounded a bit strange.
More realistically you GO TO a place, so I usually would say I am going to the gym, or maybe going down the gym.
Or even I am going training.

Re: The sport of boxing
Eubank Sr doesn’t refer to boxing as a sport. He doesn’t consider it a sport.
‘Dirty blood-business’ were his words back in the day.
That’s been replaced by ‘art and craft’ today.

Re: The sport of boxing
I don't think he did. I think it's more of a general Americanism the likes of Lampley, Kellerman, Merchant and their predecessors used in order to sound dramatic. It's definitely been picked up in the UK too in recent times though (maybe in part because of Mayweather using it a lot).Steveh583 wrote: ↑16 May 2021, 16:35it is so so so so annoying. mayweather started it and i wanted to twat him every single time.mickey1975 wrote: ↑16 May 2021, 16:09 Why does everyone say this. Re: The sport of boxing
Boxing has always had an air of pretentiousness about it
