Brandon Figueroa-Stephen Fulton Fight Rescheduled For November 27 On Showtime

Brandon Figueroa and Stephen Fulton have received a new date for their 122-pound title unification fight.

BS.com has learned that Figueroa and Fulton will headline a rescheduled “Showtime Championship Boxing” tripleheader November 27, the Saturday night after Thanksgiving Day. The site for the card headlined by Figueroa-Fulton, which was supposed to take place this Saturday night at Park MGM’s Park Theater in Las Vegas, will remain the same.

Figueroa contracted COVID-19 earlier this month. The unbeaten WBC super bantamweight champion withdrew from their bout early last week.

The postponement was announced September 7. Figueroa has already returned to the gym, which enabled Al Haymon’s PBC and Showtime to rearrange this three-bout broadcast rather quickly.

Philadelphia’s Fulton (19-0, 8 KOs) and Figueroa (22-0-1, 17 KOs), of Weslaco, Texas, will fight for Fulton’s WBO junior featherweight title and Figueroa’s WBC crown.

The rest of this postponed tripleheader will remain intact as well.

In the 10-round, co-featured fight, Ra’eese Aleem (18-0, 12 KOs), of Muskegon, Michigan, will meet Mexico’s Eduardo Baez (19-1-2, 6 KOs). The Aleem-Baez bout initially was planned as a 12-rounder for Aleem’s WBA interim super bantamweight championship, but the WBA eliminated all of its interim titles late last month in response to intense criticism initiated by the outcome of a controversial 12-round WBA interim welterweight championship match in which unbeaten Venezuelan Gabriel Maestre scored a suspicious, split-decision victory over American Mykal Fox on August 7 at The Armory in Minneapolis.

Showtime’s telecast will begin November 27 with another 10-round bout between top bantamweight contender Gary Antonio Russell (18-0, 12 KOs, 1 NC), of Capitol Heights, Maryland, and Mexican veteran Alexandro Santiago (24-2-5, 13 KOs).

This tripleheader will mark Showtime’s second COVID-related, rescheduled show in November.

The premium cable network first will air a three-fight telecast November 13 from Footprint Center, which will feature former WBC super middleweight champ David Benavidez at the home venue of the NBA’s Phoenix Suns. Phoenix’s Benavidez (24-0, 21 KOs) is set to oppose Venezuela’s Jose Uzcategui (31-4, 26 KOs) in the 12-round main event, a WBC elimination match.

Benavidez and Uzcategui were scheduled to fight August 28 at the same venue. That card was postponed August 11 because Benavidez tested positive for COVID-19.

Benavidez’s older brother, Jose Benavidez Jr., will compete in Showtime’s co-feature November 13. Jose Benavidez Jr. (27-1, 18 KOs) will square off against Argentina’s Francisco Torres (17-3, 5 KOs) in a 10-round junior middleweight match.

Jose Benavidez Jr. hasn’t fought since WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford (37-0, 28 KOs) stopped him in the 12th round of their October 2018 bout at CHI Health Center in Omaha, Nebraska, Crawford’s hometown.

Press Release

Undefeated 122-pound world champions will go toe-to-toe as WBC champion Brandon “Heartbreaker” Figueroa and WBO champion Stephen “Cool Boy Steph” Fulton Jr. meet in the SHOWTIME main event Saturday, September 18 in a Premier Boxing Champions event from Park Theater at Park MGM in Las Vegas.

SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING will begin at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and will include undefeated super bantamweight contender Ra’eese Aleem battling Mexico’s Eduardo Baez in the 10-round co-main event. Opening the telecast, unbeaten rising bantamweight contender Gary Antonio Russell takes on Mexico’s Alejandro Barrios in a 10-round showdown.

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by TGB Promotions, are on sale now and can be purchased at ticketmaster.com.

“This night of high-stakes action is headlined by two undefeated young stars in one of the most anticipated fights of the year.” said Tom Brown, President of TGB Promotions. “The winner of this fight will not only hold the mantle as the division’s best but will have a case as one of the top pound-for-pound rising stars in the sport. With Ra’eese Aleem and Gary Antonio Russell also on the card, the future of the sport takes centerstage on September 18.”

The three-fight boxing event will open SHOWTIME’s combat sports doubleheader on September 18. Immediately following the main event from Las Vegas, BELLATOR MMA will air live from San Jose, Calif., with a three-fight event headlined by light heavyweight contenders Phil Davis and Yoel Romero.

Figueroa vs. Fulton has loomed as a potential showdown for several years prior to the two unbeaten fighters joining the world championship ranks with career-best performances in 2021. Fulton struck first, dominating then-unbeaten Angelo Leo to capture the WBO title in January, while Figueroa made his own statement in stopping two-division champion Luis Nery to capture the WBC strap in May.

The 24-year-old Figueroa (22-0-1, 17 KOs) used his youth and relentless pressure to become the first person to defeat Nery in their championship clash on SHOWTIME. Figueroa’s body attack was the difference, as he was able to stand up against Nery’s offense and eventually overwhelm him to earn the knockout. A native of Weslaco, Texas, Figueroa added to his family’s legacy in capturing the world title, joining his brother Omar Figueroa who previously held the lightweight world championship. Figueroa took down a slew of veteran contenders on his way to championship status, knocking out Moises Flores, Oscar Escandon and Damien Vazquez on his ascent.

“We train hard for every fight and make sure we go 110% come fight night,” said Figueroa. “I expect Fulton to be flashy and slick with his movements, and perhaps he’ll want to mix it up a little as well, so we’re ready for anything. People know I always come to fight and with this being my second back-to-back fight against another undefeated world champion it makes this an exciting fight on paper and it should be even more exciting to see it live on September 18.”

Born and raised in West Philadelphia, Pa., Fulton (19-0, 8 KOs) faced impressive competition while rising up the 122-pound rankings to earn the opportunity that eventually saw him become world champion on SHOWTIME by besting Leo. In his last 13 professional fights, the 27-year-old has beaten eight previously undefeated fighters, including Leo, Josh Greer, Arnold Khegai, Adam Lopez and Luis Saul Rosario. Trained in his hometown by coach Wahid Rahim, Fulton has displayed sublime boxing skills that have allowed him to dominate opponents of varying styles and control fights from start to finish.

“We will have a new king of the division on a historic day,” said Fulton. “Training camp has been great, rough and dirty. I know where I need to be for this fight and I’m right there not running away from it. History will be made September 18 on Mexican Independence Day weekend in Las Vegas. Let’s celebrate with a bang!”

Owning a top-10 ranking at 122-pounds from multiple sanctioning bodies, Aleem (18-0, 12 KOs) put on the most impressive performance of his career in January to capture the interim WBA title on SHOWTIME. Aleem dominated in a battle of unbeatens, dropping Victor Pasillas four times before eventually stopping him in round 11. Raised in Michigan and training out of Las Vegas, Nev., Aleem, 31, has stopped his past seven opponents inside the distance.

“It’s great to be back fighting on SHOWTIME,” said Aleem. “I’ve been waiting patiently, working hard in the gym, and now it’s go time. Eduardo Baez is a good fighter who is trying to make a name for himself, but he’s standing in my way of becoming world champion, and I’m going to take him out. I’m on a mission to prove I’m the king of the super bantamweight division, and the journey continues on September 18.”

The 26-year-old Baez (19-1-2, 6 KOs) will look to earn a career-best victory and build on back-to-back triumphs over previously unbeaten fighters when he takes on Aleem on September 18. Originally from Baja California, Mexico, Baez now fights out of Calexico, California as he nears his second stateside outing. Baez most recently won a decision over Abimael Ortiz in March, after his U.S. debut saw him defeat Narek Abgaryan in his U.S. debut in December 2020.

“I can’t wait for this opportunity against Ra’eese Aleem,” said Baez. “Success is the most precious treasure, the more you are willing to pay, the more valuable the prize will be. I will win this fight and we will all scream ‘viva Mexico!’”

The middle brother between WBC Featherweight Champion Gary Jr. and 2016 U.S. Olympian Gary Antuanne, Antonio Russell (18-0, 12 KOs) announced his arrival amongst the bantamweight division contenders with a technical decision over former world champion Juan Carlos Payano in December 2020 on SHOWTIME. The 28-year-old from Capitol Heights, Md. turned pro in 2015 after an impressive amateur career. After four wins in 2019, Russell kicked off 2020 defeating Jesus Martinez in February. Russell returns to action after his August 14 fight against former champion Emmanuel Rodriguez ended in a no-decision in round one due to a clash of heads.

“I’m excited to be back after I trained so hard for my last fight before it ended early,” said Russell. “Now, I’m just taking that same fight energy that I had for Emmanuel Rodriguez and bringing it on September 18 for my new opponent.”

The 25-year-old Barrios (24-2-5, 13 KOs) has not been beaten since 2014, a streak spanning 20 fights. Representing his native Tijuana, Mexico, Barrios has won his last eight contests since a 2018 draw against Jerwin Ancajas in a 115-pound title bout. After defeating Erick Hernandez and Willibaldo Garcia in 2020, Barrios knocked out Juan Gabriel Medina to begin his 2021. In addition to the draw against Ancajas, Barrios has fought then unbeaten Jose Martinez-Mercado to a draw twice while also earning the same result against then undefeated Antonio Nieves.

“I want to thank my whole team and everyone else who made this fight possible,” said Barrios. “It has been a long road for me. I’ve been looking for another title fight or a rematch with Ancajas, ever since our draw. We decided to move up to 118-pounds and I’ve just remained focused and worked hard for the next opportunity. Now I get to share the ring with a great and talented fighter in Gary Antonio Russell. On September 18, I will leave everything in that ring, put on a great fight for all boxing fans and leave victorious.”

Stephen Fulton To Face Nery-Figueroa Winner In Sept. 11 Title Unification Bout On Showtime

Stephen Fulton will be among the sport’s most interested observers when Luis Nery and Brandon Figueroa collide next month.

The unbeaten reigning WBO junior featherweight titlist from Philadelphia will have the chance to add two more titles to his collection in his next fight. Fulton will face the winner of the May 15 clash between WBC champ Luis Nery and secondary WBA titleholder Brandon Figueroa, with the unified title clash due to headline a September 11 Showtime Championship Boxing telecast from a location to be determined.

Fulton (19-0, 8 KOs) made the most of his rescheduled title fight with Albuquerque’s Angelo Leo (20-1, 9 KOs), scoring a landslide unanimous decision this past January at Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut. The bout came five months after they were due to meet last August 1st, only for Fulton to have to withdraw after testing positive for COVID-19. Leo wound up facing unbeaten Tramaine Williams whom he outpointed to claim the vacant WBO title.

Next up for the supremely talented 26-year-old will be his fourth consecutive undefeated opponent, no matter the winner on May 15. All four current major title claimants at junior featherweight boast unbeaten records, with Fulton joined by Tijuana’s Nery (31-0, 24 KOs), Weslaco, Texas’ Figueroa (21-0-1, 16 KOs) and Uzbekistan’s Murodjon Akhmadaliev (9-0. 7 KOs) who holds the WBA “Super” and IBF titles.

Nery and Figueroa will collide in a rare unification bout allowing a secondary title to be at stake along with another sanctioning body’s belt. The fight along with the winner facing Fulton serve among four title unification championships gracing Showtime’s upcoming stretch. The pair of junior featherweight unification bouts bookend a nine-event spring and summer schedule formally announced Thursday by Showtime.

No other details were yet revealed for the September 11 Showtime Championship Boxing telecast.

Should be a great fight.

Fulton Jr has looked good. He definitely has the superior boxing skills, speed/quickness. He also has the ability to go inside and trade. He has great desire to succeed.

B Fig appears to be raw/crude, slow, taking too many shots. But, Figueroa enters the ring ready to throw 100 punches a round. He has a solid chin. He has decent power. He has huge heart. He has the height and reach advantage, although he tends not to take advantage of them.

I think that the key question is whether Fulton Jr can get Figueroa’s respect, early, with his pop. If he can, he should be able to win on the cards. If not, Fig will chop on him all night long. Then the secondary question becomes, can Fulton Jr survive and do just enough to get the decision.

50/50.

Fulton doesn’t knock a lot of guys out, but Fig gets hit by way too many shots. Predicting that Fulton stops him in a competitive fight.

Figueroa fights like his older bro while staying too much put. It has worked against the little Nery (who has lost his weight cheat as a super bantam) but Cool Boy could punish him for good with his timing and counters.

Yes, Fulton Jr could do what many thought the undefeated Mexican would do, and Figs could chop him down like the Nery tree if he does not have the pop (early) to get Brandon’s respect. While Figs gets hit, he has not shown signs of being stopped.

I have a feeling they might slap this on the Canelo-Plant, if that goes place on FOX PPV.

The way Eddie Hearn is going he’s pushing Canelo-Plant for DAZN.

PBC, Showtime Move Fulton-Figueroa Telecast From September 11 To September 18

Stephen Fulton and Brandon Figueroa will have to wait an additional week for their 122-pound title unification fight.

Boxing Scene has learned that Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions and Showtime have agreed to move the telecast topped by the Fulton-Figueroa fight from September 11 to September 18. The card headlined by Philadelphia’s Fulton (19-0, 8 KOs) and Figueroa (22-0-1, 17 KOs), of Weslaco, Texas, likely will be held at Park Theater at Park MGM in Las Vegas.

The initial date for Fulton to fight the winner of the Figueroa-Luis Nery match May 15 was announced as part of Showtime’s four-month schedule of fights late in April. Delaying the Fulton-Figueroa show one week made more sense, though, once it became clear Canelo Alvarez and Caleb Plant would not fight September 18.

PBC planned for Alvarez-Plant to headline a FOX Sports Pay-Per-View show September 18. Mexico’s Alvarez (56-1-2, 38 KOs) and Plant (21-0, 12 KOs) might meet later this year in the super middleweight title unification fight Alvarez wants, but the night of September 18 became a completely open date for televised boxing in the United States once they couldn’t come to an agreement to fight that night.

Had PBC and Showtime kept Fulton-Figueroa on September 11, the telecast would’ve competed at least for some viewers with Triller Fight Club’s pay-per-view show. Long-retired legend Oscar De La Hoya and former UFC star Vitor Belfort will fight in Triller’s main event September 11 at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Fulton-Figueroa is undoubtedly a lower-profile fight than De La Hoya-Belfort. They’re undefeated world champions, however, entering one of the best bouts that can be made within the 122-pound division.

They’ll fight for Fulton’s WBO junior featherweight title and the WBC super bantamweight championship Figueroa won when he stopped a favored Nery (31-1, 24 KOs) in the seventh round nearly four months ago at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. Fulton won the WBO 122-pound crown in his last fight – a decisive, 12-round, unanimous points victory over Angelo Leo (21-1, 9 KOs) on January 23 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Stephen Fulton vs. Brandon Figueroa Lands at Park MGM, September 18

The stage is now set as undefeated 122-pound world champions are set to square off when WBC champion Brandon “Heartbreaker” Figueroa and WBO champion Stephen “Cool Boy Steph” Fulton Jr. will meet in a title unification.

As BS.com previously reported, the fight date was going to be moved off September 11 and is now taking taking place on Saturday, September 18.

The event will be televised live on Showtime in a Premier Boxing Champions event from the Park Theater at Park MGM in Las Vegas.

Tickets for the live event go on sale today at 10 a.m. PT and can be purchased at ticketmaster.com. The event is promoted by TGB Promotions.

Figueroa vs. Fulton has been a much-discussed potential showdown for several years prior to the two unbeaten fighters joining the world championship ranks with career-best performances in 2021.

Fulton struck first, dominating then-unbeaten Angelo Leo to capture the WBO title in January, while Figueroa made his own statement in stopping two-division champion Luis Nery to capture the WBC strap in May.

WBA To Strip Brandon Figueroa Of Secondary Title Ahead of WBC/WBO Unification With Stephen Fulton

Brandon Figueroa is one win away from unifying two titles in the 122-pound division.

He will have to give up one belt in the moments leading to his physically pursuing that goal.

In its continued efforts to consolidate the number of current titlists within its organization, the World Boxing Association (WBA) informed Figueroa (22-0-1, 17KOs) of its intention to strip the unbeaten Texan of the WBA “World” junior featherweight belt heading into his next bout. Figueroa is due to face Philadelphia’s Stephen Fulton (19-0, 8KOs) in a WBC/WBO title unification bout on September 18, live on Showtime from Park MGM in Las Vegas.

Uzbekistan’s Murodjon Akhmadaliev (9-0, 7KOs) is the current WBA “Super” 122-pound champion in addition to holding the IBF title. Akhmadaliev is the only recognized WBA title claimant at the weight according to other sanctioning bodies. Other sanctioning bodies do not recognize secondary titles as part of the unification process, leaving Figueroa to put his WBC title on the line while aiming for Fulton’s WBO title.

Figueroa won the WBC belt in a seventh-round knockout of unbeaten Luis Nery on May 15, with his WBA “World” title not at stake for that contest despite previous suggestions of the fight serving as a title unification clash. Retaining the secondary title is a luxury the 23-year-old Weslaco, Texas native is no longer afforded, as is the case with any other secondary WBA beltholder pursuing other title fights.

“The World Boxing Association (WBA) Championships Committee sent a communication to the team of the super bantamweight champion, Brandon Figueroa, to inform them that his title WBA Super Bantamweight will be vacated once he steps into the ring on September 18 in a unification fight against Stephan Fulton, as reported by the press,” the sanctioning body announced on Tuesday.

Because the upcoming fight with Fulton is not sanctioned by the WBA, Figueroa will be deemed in violation of rule C. 10 (10) covering non-sanctioned bouts as it relates to recognized WBA champions: “An Association Champion or officially recognized contender who participates in a fight without approval or sanction from the Championships Committee, may have his title or recognized status removed.”

With that, Figueroa’s two-plus year stay as a WBA title claimant will soon come to an end.

“Figueroa’s [WBA 122-pound] title will be vacant as of September 18,” confirmed the WBA.

Figueroa won an interim title in April 2019, making one defense before receiving an upgrade to “World” titlist in advance of his November 2019 draw with Julio Ceja who missed weight and was ineligible to win the title. Figueroa defended the secondary version of the title in a seventh-round stoppage of Damien Vazquez last September. The win over Nery did not have the WBA belt at stake, nor will Figueroa any longer have that option the moment he enters the ring to face Fulton in September.

Ra’eese Aleem currently holds the WBA interim junior featherweight title and is due to next face former unified titlist Danny Roman, who lost to Akhamadaliev by narrow split decision last January. Their bout is rumored to take place on the undercard of Figueroa-Fulton. Also potentially discussed for that night on a separate show is Akhmadaliev’s ordered mandatory title defense versus Ronny Rios, likely to take place in California.

The winners of Akhmadaliev-Rios and Aleem-Roman will likely be ordered to next face one another, given the WBA’s current promise to reduce its number of recognized titlists while phasing out interim and secondary titles. The movement comes in the aftermath of the controversial August 7 WBA interim welterweight title fight, where Gabriel Maestre won a highly questionable split decision over Mykal Fox in a fight that has caught worldwide attention for all of the wrong reasons.

Ra'eese Aleem-Eduardo Baez Showtime’s Co-Feature For Figueroa-Fulton Card September 18

Ra’esse Aleem will fight on the Brandon Figueroa-Stephen Fulton undercard, but not against the opponent many boxing fans expected.

Boxing Scene has learned that Aleem will defend a version of the WBA’s super bantamweight championship against Eduardo Baez on September 18. Showtime will televise the Aleem-Baez bout as the 12-round opener of a doubleheader from Park Theater at Park MGM in Las Vegas.

Numerous outlets reported that Aleem (18-0, 12 KOs) would face former IBF and WBA champ Daniel Roman (29-3-1, 10 KOs) in this “Showtime Championship Boxing” doubleheader, but that fight didn’t materialize. Showtime will televise only two boxing matches that night, rather than offering its customary three-bout broadcast, because the network will televise a mixed martial arts show, “Bellator MMA 266,” from SAP Center in San Jose, California, immediately following a boxing telecast scheduled to start at 9 p.m. EDT.

The 31-year-old Aleem, a Las Vegas resident raised in Muskegon, Michigan, won the WBA interim 122-pound championship by stopping Vic Pasillas (16-1, 9 KOs) in the 11th round of his last fight. Aleem dropped Pasillas four times during that scheduled 12-rounder January 23 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

The WBA might promote Aleem to the status of world champion because it stripped that title from Figueroa (22-0-1, 17 KOs). Figueroa still will defend his WBC super bantamweight title when he faces Philadelphia’s Fulton (19-0, 8 KOs), the WBO junior featherweight champ.

The Mexican-born Baez, 26, has won eight straight bouts, but he’ll take a step up in class against Aleem. In his most recent action, the 5-feet-9 Baez (19-1-2, 6 KOs), of Calexico, California, unanimously out-pointed Puerto Rico’s Abimael Ortiz (9-1-1, 5 KOs) in an eight-rounder NBC Sports Network aired as part of its “Ring City USA” series March 25 from San Juan.

Baez has lost only a six-round unanimous decision to fellow Mexican Mauricio Lara (22-2, 15 KOs). Mexico City’s Lara upset former IBF featherweight champ Josh Warrington (30-1, 7 KOs) by ninth-round technical knockout February 13 at Wembley Arena in London.
