Demetrius Andrade labels Canelo a “Coward” for avoiding him

Post by Enlightened-One »

"Demetrius Andrade labels Canelo a “Coward” for avoiding him"

Unbeaten Demetrius Andrade went into a long rant last week during an interview with DAZN, letting them know how he views superstar Canelo Alvarez as a “cowardly” fighter who has been avoiding a fight with him and taking on lesser opposition lately.

Most boxing fans would vehemently disagree with Andrade, 33, about his label of Canelo as a “coward” for not facing him and other fighters like David Benavidez, Artur Beterbiev, Dimitry Bivol, and Jermall Charlo.

The fans view Canelo as being more of a calculated fighter when choosing his opponents. As we’ve seen with Canelo’s decision to face Avni Yildirim, Billy Joe Saunders, and Rocky Fielding, he’s careful in his opponent selection.

The WBO middleweight champion Andrade (30-0, 18 KOs) was lambasted publically by Canelo when he showed up at his post-fight press conference on May 8th to ask him for a fight after his victory over Billy Joe Saunders.

Canelo took a harsh approach to turn down Andrade’s request by letting him know that he doesn’t view him as a good fighter and that he hasn’t fought anyone.

After giving Andrade a quick taste of what he thought of him, Canelo ordered him to be removed from the press conference in a Kingly way.

Andrade has been trying to get a fight with Canelo for the last three years, and he’s watched him during that time take fights these less than talented fighters:

• Avni Yildirim
• Billy Joe Saunders
• Rocky Fielding
• Callum Smith
• Daniel Jacobs
• Sergey Kovalev

Jacobs and Kovalev were good fighters many years ago, but not at the time Canelo fought them. They were well past their primes, especially Kovalev.

“He’s a coward, a coward. That’s some coward s—,” said Andrade to the DAZN Boxing show about ducking him to face the weak champions at 168. “I gave him respect: ‘Canelo, good job, now when can we make it happen?’

“You can’t give people the opportunity to fight, about money or not about money. Give people the opportunity to make a name for themselves, but I can’t do that. That’s cowardly,” said an upset Demetrius.

Canelo has been taking advantage of the less than stellar champions at 168. Unlike the 160-lb division, which has excellent fighters holding titles, the 168-lb division had average fighters holding belts. Canelo obviously saw an opportunity to win some easy belts from this group of title-holders:

• Rocky Fielding
• Billy Joe Saunders
• Callum Smith

You can’t blame Canelo for being an opportunist to take advantage of a weak group of champions at 168. Still, at the same time, Andrade wonders why he didn’t attempt to become the undisputed champion at 160.

Canelo held the IBF, WBA, and WBC middleweight titles, and he was only one belt away from becoming the undisputed champion. For Canelo to get that title, he would have had to beat WBO champ, Andrade.

Instead of doing that, Canelo vacated his 160-lb titles and went up to 168 to go after WBA champ Rocky Fielding, who was seen as the weakest link among the champions in the division.

“Callum Smith, he fought a load of old guys in Europe, and all of a sudden he’s getting the fight,” said Andrade. “What did Billy Joe do to get that fight?

“He went 12 rounds with Martin Murray,” said Andrade in pointing out that Canelo’s recent opposition did nothing to earn a shot against him.

Callum Smith’s captured his WBA title beating George Groves after he’d come off of shoulder surgery. This wasn’t the same Groves that we’d seen for years. Groves had injured his shoulder in his previous fight with Chris Eubank Jr.

The author of the above article has made many claims that are factually inaccurate. But I won't dwell on those, instead I'll list some pertinent facts that cannot be refuted.

Andrade rejected opportunities to face Jermell Charlo, Sergiy Derevyanchenko, Matt Korobov and Erislandy Lara. And at one point, Demetrius previously conceded that he wasn't ready to face Billy Joe Saunders.

It’s also important to note that DAZN’s talent pool of 160lbs and 168lbs fighters is pretty deep, but Andrade’s own promoter (Eddie Hearn) refuses to orchestrate in-house bouts between Boo Boo and any his fellow big-name network stablemates.

Demetrius Andrade initially made the jump to 160lbs 3½ years ago. He has never officially weighed more than 160lbs for any of his fights.

Canelo’s only middleweight fights within the last 56 months were against GGG (twice) and Daniel Jacobs. His other six bouts were at 168lbs or 175lbs.

Demetrius Andrade has been competing in the pro ranks for 12½ years, but the only notable names on his resume are Maciej Sulecki and Vanes Martirosyan! :o

Andrade has spent an entire career avoiding risk in pursuit of the pot at the end of the under achievers rainbow. Now he accuses the number 1 brand in boxing of being a coward.

Fight Charlo, Andrade. Fight anyone who is a challenge.

11 fights in 8 years? You are 33 years old and you have done squat with your talent. Sounds like someone is getting desperate.

You have nothing of value for Canelo. How are you going to change that?

Same goes for Charlo.

Here's a comparison between Canelo's and Andrade's opponents within the last five years:

Canelo (11 fights):
• Billy Joe Saunders
• Avni Yildirim
• Callum Smith
• Sergey Kovalev
• Daniel Jacobs
• Rocky Fielding
• Gennadiy Golovkin (twice)
• Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
• Liam Smith
• Amir Khan

Andrade (8 fights):
• Liam Williams
• Luke Keeler
• Maciej Sulecki
• Artur Akavov
• Walter Kautondokwa
• Alantez Fox
• Jack Culcay
• Willie Nelson

Canelo has just engaged in three fights within four months and 19 days. His next fight will mean he’s fought four times in less than nine months.

Demetrius Andrade doesn’t currently have a fight lined-up, but by the time Canelo faces Caleb Plant in September, the American would have only engaged in four fights within 35 months.

This guy really is a bit of an embarrassment isn't he? He's not on Canelo's level, he's not even on the level below him. :OhYes:

Andrade and his team know exactly what they are doing. They understand that Canelo has faced everyone where he has faced no one. As stated above, he's doing what he can to get the big prize. He doesn't want to roll up his sleeves and earn it the right way. He's trying to talk his way into it.

Andrade is doing what David Haye did to Wladimir Klitschko by trying to goad Alvarez into fighting him.

If Canelo does eventually fall for Andrade's stunts and agrees to fight, I fear, just like the aforementioned Haye, Andrade will suffer a one sided defeat because he just isn't in Alvarez's class.

He is the WBO middleweight champ, should vacate the title and become mandatory for the super middle. Easy, there are no excuses.

Most fighters that have unified three or more titles usually end up vacating one or two of them, because their status in the sport exceeds the value of the belts they carry.

It’s also too difficult to retain ownership of all the straps, because the governing bodies deadlines to perform mandatories are too difficult to constantly achieve.

Also, often the mandatory challengers aren’t the biggest fights that can be made.

So I expect Canelo to consider vacating (most, if not all) of his 168lbs titles as soon as he’s beaten Caleb Plant, because he’ll have bigger fish to fry.

And there are lots of biggest fights out there for Canelo than Demetrius Andrade.

As bad as this may sound, Demetrius Andrade might eventually become a three-weight world champion, without ever beating any notable name throughout the entirety of his career!

I'm not so sure about that. Andrade to me is better than Lara, maybe not as elusive, but slick. 4 inches taller, over-all better skilled according to a trainer they both had. Canelo didn't want to fight him when at 154, but jumped at the chance to fight the guy in his place(Liam Smith?) after Andrade was stripped. Last year DAZN offered Charlo $7 million for a fight, so at least he is trying. He may not win, but he would give a better fight than Saunders did. Canelo is an opportunist, a little like Floyd in that regard.

It's well known Andrade's resume is weak for his age, but if he's so bad, why not use him for a tune up? After all, I think if you compare some other guys Canelo fought, like Amir Khan, and at least half a dozen guys with big names but way over the hill, he should get a shot.

Demetrius Andrade was stripped of his WBO world 154lbs title for failing to defend it within a nine-month period, immediately after rejecting a career-high payday to face Jermell Charlo.

Had he taken the Charlo bout, he would have also commenced a three-fight deal with Showtime. But for some reason he decided to duck Jermell Charlo and also walk away from a lucrative network deal.

So we know for certain that Andrade ducked Charlo, was also stripped of his WBO world title, became inactive and ended up facing the following anonymous names for his next three bouts: Dario Fabian Pucheta, Willie Nelson and Jack Culcay.

When Canelo faced Liam Smith, the Brit held the WBO's 154lbs title. And at that moment in time, Andrade was merely a challenger rated 6th by The RING.

As well as rejecting the Jermell Charlo bout, Andrade also rejected opportunities to face Sergiy Derevyanchenko, Matt Korobov and Erislandy Lara. Demetrius also previously conceded that he wasn't ready to face Billy Joe Saunders.

If you think I'm wrong, you're welcome to check the facts listed above. :TU:

Not before unification. Andrade brings nothing to the table. Furthermore, he has never fought let alone beaten anyone even on Khan’s level, leave alone 3G, Jacobs, Callum Smith, BJS, Cotto, FMJ, Lara, Trout, Kovalev...WAIT A MINUTE...that’s right, Andrade fought Vanes TO A SPLIT DECISION.

he was gifted a draw in a bout he clearly lost to save his dubious streak since floyd.

and in the rematch which could have been a draw if scored overly generous (but still wrongly) towards canelo they robbed ggg of all the middleweight marbles in his 20th fornicating defence.

His team and management obviously don't think so, otherwise he would have more than the one belt he holds in a death grip.
33 is getting to the age when guys can experience a slide in speed. Andrade relies on speed a lot.
Its reeks of cashout doesn't it?

I agree. There is no way to confirm Canelo would demolish Andrade the Giant (in his own mind), without them getting in the ring. Dude definitely has skills that he has never authentically tested. The sand in his hourglass is heading south fast though.

Of course, the case can be made that he is younger than his years based on mileage.

I would have no problem with Canelo getting in with him after Plant, although I would rather see him in with Benavides, if they both get by their next opponents.

Canelo will quite rightly prefer to face prestigious opposition that optimises his paydays, than face the underachieving anonymous unproven Andrade.
