Sergio Garcia Vacates EBU Title
Sergio Garcia Vacates EBU Title
Undefeated Spanish super welterweight Sergio "El Nino" Garcia (33-0) has relinquished the EBU title. Over the last few months there's been a lot of talks back and forth and Garcia turned down a chance to appear on the big Matchroom/DAZN show in Barcelona on April 23.
There was also a defense against mandatory challenger Frenchman Dylan Charrat (20-0-1) coming up with a good payday but the now ex-champ turned that down as well.
As previously reported by Boxing Scene, Garcia and his promoter MGZ have a deal for a fight in the US against "The Towering Inferno" Sebastian Fundora (17-0-1) in the summer.
Dylan Charrat is now to fight the highest ranked available challenger for the vacant title. One of the fighters in play for that fight is Spaniard Kerman Lejarraga (32-2), who now is in line for a showdown against Italian Orlando Fiordigiglio (32-3) for the vacant EU crown. There were purse bids set to take place on Wednesday in Rome but the parties involved reached an agreement and MGZ will promote the fight in Spain with date and site to be announced.

Hope he gets a good payday vs Fundora, who is going to make him look like a midget even though El Nino isn't short for a junior middleweight. Garcia is ranked #2 by the WBC so somewhat surprising he is taking the big risk, but maybe he is tired of waiting around for a title shot

That’s a really weird fight but I’m looking forward to it already. I really rate Garcia but Fondura creates all sorts of problems.

Sergio Garcia is a very good boxer from what I've seen but lacks power.

Does that mean he has a path to or near a better belt? Why vacate euro unless you got worlds coming it basicaly garentee a you will be able to get some decent fights.

Yeh, that’s usually the reason to vacate a belt..gregregegg wrote: ↑20 May 2021, 21:06 Does that mean he has a path to or near a better belt? Why vacate euro unless you got worlds coming it basicaly garentee a you will be able to get some decent fights.

The European title can only be fought for in Europe, and continuing to defend the title infinitely doesn't seem to get him anywhere closer to becoming the WBC mandatory.gregregegg wrote: ↑20 May 2021, 21:06 Does that mean he has a path to or near a better belt? Thus, there is not so much more to be gained from defending that title in Spain, and even if he could get a nice little bag if he fought against one of Matchroom's boxers in the UK, there is always the risk he'd get robbed. Just look at what happened to Kiko Martinnez recently (and vice versa for the UK fighters at the Spanish Matchroom card recently held in Barcelona).
Going to the US seems to be the way forward. More money than in Spain, and a chance to finally get a world title fight. And win or lose against Fundora, I think he wants to know his level and what he can get out of boxing. He was very close to giving up on boxing and had a long pause a few years back, and I therefore think Garcia is a person who either does something with perfection and lots of motivation, and then he wants to get his chances too, or he'd rather do something else for a living.

Re: Sergio Garcia Vacates EBU Title
And as I posted here in another post yesterday - Kerman Lejarraga, who is now Garcia's stablemate (they both live in northern Spain and have been sparring against one another for years), will box for the vacant EBU title against the Frenchman who originally won the purse bid to fight Garcia in France. New purse bid set for 9 June. Giving up on the EBU title thus gave his stablemate a chance to fight for the title, and now that events can be arranged with spectators again, that is just what their promotor MGZ needs. Hopefully we'll see events with 1000s of ticket buyers soon again in Bilbao.

See that makes sense knew there had to be something otherwise you don’t drop the title till they make you in his position.nidaros997 wrote: ↑21 May 2021, 08:31 And as I posted here in another post yesterday - Kerman Lejarraga, who is now Garcia's stablemate (they both live in northern Spain and have been sparring against one another for years), will box for the vacant EBU title against the Frenchman who originally won the purse bid to fight Garcia in France. Excellent boxer is Nino, lacking power but still giving Fundora a lot of problems.

despite fundoras height i think moving in and out is a better strategy than fighting him inside
