how do you rate a trainer

with all the talk of trainer quality lately, how do you even rate the trainer and seperate them from what the boxer has already? basically, how do you say that one trainer can take a fighter to levels others wouldnt if they had the fighter?

the results their fighters get?

comparing how the fighter performed with other trainers?

how big their stable is?

etc

basically how is it that we decide who to praise and who to not rate so highly

A big part of it is the improvements they make. For example I gave Dave Coldwell much more credit for the improvements he made with Gavin McDonnell than any of Jamie McDonnell’s wins under him as Jamie was pretty much the finished article already where as the Gavin McDonnell that got a gift against Josh Wale would never have beaten Gamal Yafai & earned a world title shot.

It’s like Shane McGuigan at the minute. I give him loads of credit for what he’s doing with Okolie because he’s made huge improvements.

It's the promoters/managers job to make the matches, very important in a fighters development, keeping them busy too.

Both are way beyond that and are proved at all weights.

I take the general point, but Gallagher arguably cost Quigg the biggest fight of his life. Far too negative and got it all wrong trying to overthink it.
