Matchroom last show on Sky

Post by garethhop »

I understood Matchroom has one last show to conclude Sky contract. Rumours were of Ritson headlining something in June.

Nothing announced yet. Will the event happen?

Unless they are waiting for crowds to be approved.

Seems strange no announcement at this stage.

Guessing the end of the partnership and switch will be announced shortly with deal into last 4 weeks.

Eddie’s (Mayweather/Paul) comments last week / this is nothing to do with me told you everything.

How will Eddie get the casuals without Sky Sports News? Is he that arrogant he doesn't realise it was them who made him famous?

Yes.. this is true. No one subscribed to Sky sports to watch boxing. There are probably 2-3 other sports people watch BEFORE they watch boxing.

Boxing is considered a bonus.

When the Canelo fans were all shouting 'EDDIE EDDIE EDDIE' at him outside the T mobile arena. I'm curious how they got access to Sky sports news. They don't have Dixons windows in Texas I don't think.

You mean at&t stadium?

Like you said Canelo fans. And that Eddie promoted previous Canelo fights.

I think Mickey was referring more to UK fans

So, James, Eddie's profile won't massively drop in the UK when he leaves Sky? Is he concentrating on Canelo now?

Do they have Dixons where you live? I thought they'd shut down years ago. For the record, I don't blame Eddie. His UK output has been crap for years, his best fighters are women and best ticket sellers, well, one got sparked and the other (Ritson) isn't that good.

I was just fishing mate. Hope you're keeping well btw.

Yeah his UK profile will definitely drop without Sky and viewing figures and fighter profile will go through the floor. If you're a UK promoter you want Sky and anyone who says otherwise is in denial. The Dazn money will have to be bloody big for it to be worth it. And we've seen before with PBC when we were seeing Leo Santa Cruz get $750,000 dollars to box road sweepers as chief support it just isn't sustainable to throw money at it unless you get big viewing figures that people are paying for. I just don't see how uk fans paying £5 or whatever it is will balance the books.

The thing is, his uk stable isn't too great at the minute. Benn could have become a big star with Sky, I'm amazed he hasn't challenged Taylor to step up and face him to prove himself. He's even put Kugan on the back burner when he's realised he can do it himself. I bet Okolie and Buatsi get their come out fights abroad. Katie Taylor sells in America. The light middles are fun, that's about it and Hatton is shite.

So what are Sky going to do with boxing now? Without Hearn are they going to show any boxing? Warren is over with BT do they go back to him?

If it means no more Adam Smith that's fine with me but it's still good for the sport for the UK's biggest Sports network to be showing boxing. If they're not covering it all, that must be a worry.

They need to align to another promoter, in reality with the big sky contract they could give it to anyone and a success would be made as you would be able to sign the big fighters and give them work.

You can be the best promoter in the world but you are nothing without tv.

Give the contract to a mediocre promoter and he will be a success

With Sky backing, they might get the WBSS back on and produce another two undisputed champions. Smith would prefer that, I'm sure. Stick a Brit in each one. Sky would have made Groves-Eubank and Groves-Smith huge.

With Kalle as the new Hearn? That will make for some interesting press coverage.

He's a bit of a cult hero in boxing but i don't think he's got the profile of Hearn publicly. Getting the Sky contract will change that and i think he'll be good entertainment.

Tyan Booth's videos would see a shift in focus.

Instead of 'ya know that Koooogan yeah?'

it would be

'Ya know the coke sniffer Kelly Sunderland?'

You mean, apart from Joshua, Whyte, Callum Smith, Okolie, Saunders and Galahad? I'm assuming he still has Brook, Chisora, Selby, Ryder and Liam Smith.

Surely that's better than 'isn't too great'.
I'd remove half of that list. Didn't even bid for Liam in Russia, Galahad, Brook, admits he hasn't heard from Callum for months, Whyte is Crap, Chis an opponent, we don't know what BJS is doing and he probably feels a bit put out.

He has by far the best stable in British boxing. Oh, and I missed off Josh Warrington. You not a fan of Eddie or do you just focus on the negatives?
He does have by far the best stable in British boxing but it’s not as strong as it was 5 or 6 years back when he had more world champs and more guys that had the profile to headline a PPV.

Absoluely bang on. Much lower profile now.

The million dollar question is who are the fighters that will make enough people subscribe to DAZN. (I know for Eddie it's about Matchroom, Fight Camp, the Brand etc. but we're some way from that...)

Connor Benn is one. Warrington can possibly be another if he can win his rematch. Katie Taylor is the third.

The other two are Joshua and Whyte but appear to not be tied into DAZN deal.

The other UK fighters that are of value are Fury and now Josh Taylor, and both with Top Rank.

Finally, the only other one who isn't tied to a broadcaster is Chris Eubank Jnr.
