Rumour Mill: Golovkin vs. Murata (December 31st)

Apparently Team GGG (including Eddie Hearn) and Teiken Promotions are in the midst of negotiating a December 31st bout between Golovkin and Murata.

The pair would co-feature on a double-header (appearing on the same card) during late August or early September, mainly due to Murata being inactive for 20 months. A tune-up would be beneficial for Gennadiy as well, because he would ave only engaged in one bout (the appalling Szeremeta mismatch) within 23 months.

Sources confirming this speculation include Eddie Hearn and and a source aligned with Murata's promoter (Akihiko Honda).

Under normal circumstances (five years ago), I would have heavily-favoured GGG to quickly demolish Murata, but Gennadiy is on the cusp of turning 40 years of age and we have to consider his inevitable physical decline whenever we make our predictions.

At this stage of his illustrious career, every single bout Golovkin engages in from this point forward should be considered a potential banana skin, because sometimes fighters seemingly grow old overnight.

I could be wrong, for all I know, Gennadiy might defy my personal expectations, by possessing Bernard Hopkins-like career longevity, but the real-world statistical likelihood is that he won’t.

I still think GGG beats Murata within eight rounds, but I won’t be surprised if he's taken the distance.

Would be surprised at a Dec 31st date, given Fuji would be the broadcaster in Japan, and they've never done an NYE show... Heard this rumor for months, and can't help but think it'll be a few days earlier... But that's just using how Fuji have done boxing I'm the past (and the dominance of NHK and TBS on NYE)
