Which Era of boxing is your favourite

Post by Foggy »

Bit of a tough one this for me, I remember the 90s boxing well as I would have been a teenager and have fond memories of Naz, Benn, Eubank, Lewis, even the lower guys like scrap iron Ryan, Thaxton, Piper, Crawford Ashley, robbie regan, spencer Oliver (really just watched the big fights and mainly just British boxing) but then between 2000 and 2010 I really got into boxing watching every weekend, going to shows etc when i was in my twenties.

I know every decade is different and has different talents and memories but I’ll have to go 2000-2010 not because of the fights it’s just personal to me because of how I embraced the sport.

What everyone’s favourite era?

Same. Maybe 1986 thrown in. 1987 (Leonard vs Hagler) was the year the era jumped the shark for me

The 90s. Although the 70s and the 80s are close.

I enjoy reading about the guys from the early 20th Century to the early 60's. Ketchel; Johnson; Grebb; Langford; Walker; Graziano; Robinson; Charles; Liston etc.

But from what era I have watched - it's got to be late 80's and 90's .. boxing was on TV back then, and some great British fights. The newly reintroduced British super-featherweight title provided superb action .. for a while nobody could keep hold of it.
So many fantastic small hall shows - and of course the big Friday/Saturday night fights.

Probably 1977 to about 1989, when the WBO made it four world titles in one world and I began to switch off.

Same and for the same reasons. I started to properly get into boxing in the early 2000s (when my dad got Sky - he wouldn’t until my brother and I had finished exams!). I didn’t go to any shows when I was kid so it was the decade when I first started going to shows and training/fighting a little bit myself when I was at university.

I’ve got signed posters in my office of Moore/Macklin, Hatton/Tszyu and Haye/Maccarinelli and they’re all fights I loved and involved my 3 favourite fighters of that era. I got into a real bad mood straight after the Moore/Rhodes fight. 😂

I loved the domestic scene in the 90s and early 2000s. Every Friday night on Sky. So many classic wars.

Well. It's never as good as when you first start watching I guess. My enthusiasm couldn't have been higher than it was from 2002-2005, and with no HBO. I don't see it ever returning there.
