Most shots at a world title

Post by Foggy »

Let’s see if anyone can beat Manuel Medina, he had 11 shots to win a world championship (some he won, some he lost) - only counted wbc/o/a and ibf

Any others who had multiple attempts at winning world titles?

I know it's not the most shots, but when George Groves finally got a world title, wasn't it great? :yay:
Especially after he got knocked out at Wembley in front of at least 80 Frotch fans...

Jorge Arce must’ve had about 10 or 11 shots, can’t be arsed to check though.

Assume you are talking about unsuccessful title shots without winning. I know Yaqui Lopez and Leonel Hernandez had five unsuccessful shots back in the day when there were only two titles per weight class. Carlos Buitrago might have had six, I'd have to check. Martin Murray, I think, had five

Rocky Juarez had 5 I think. I actually saw the one he came closest to winning in person. His draw with Chris John, I stopped of in Houston that night to watch JMM vs Juan Diaz in the Ring magazine fight of the year.

Life was so simple back then.

I remember him being supremely confident against Badou Jack.

Then he got put down in the first and the confidence kind of waned.

I checked. If you include ‘interim’ titles he had 12 title shots.

orlando salido had 10

a very mexicany thing it appears to get a bunch of shots. for 1 thing they are more active than most and aren't really arsed my a loss, for another the lower divisions have more title shots going around (smaller pool of fighters usually). they are diverse in being able to play a-side and b-side at world level too, whereas a lot of good fightrs from other north american/central american places have less promotional back and will always be brought in as opponents rather than being able to set up their own shots

Pacman must be up there, if not #1 (not including defenses).
