Legacies

Post by coneye »

Leaving a legacy is often spoke about ,, But has often said , a great fighter often needs another great fighter to create the interest ,, In days gone by we had the top 4 Hagler , Leonard , Duran , Hearns ,,, they left a great legacy and will go down in history forever spoken about has greats ,,,,

Unfortunatly this sort of scenario does'nt play out too much anymore , spoiled by managers , promotional companys ect ect .
But i think at the moment we have a division where once again it could go down in history IF they fight each other , thats , Lopez , Garcia , Haney . Davis ,,, a legacy to be remembered for years is there for the taking , but bet they don't grab it with both hands ,, Whats changed

and yet of those 4 lightweights, tanks already jumped to 140 for a cherry picked secondary title fight

garcia is on mental health leave

at least teo and haney are active, albeit not against each other

so i dunno, the future is bright for them, but dont get too excited expectin them to fight eacch other

part of it too is that the fear of losing an unbeaten record is at its all time great today

even hardcore fans who say losses dont matter are quick to jump on guys and write them off if they take even 1 loss

eg joshua was not even supposed to be boxing anymore. he was supposed to be ruined by the single loss of his career, and instead of avenging it straight away he was going to get ko'd again and then retire. he'd lost the plot, lost his head, didnt have it

Oogie pretty much summed it up.

If you can make Millions to fight no hopers, why are you gonna risk yourself in a big challenge when you basically wouldn't make that much more money?

Somewhere along the way stuff got ass backwards with how these guys get paid, and when, and until that sh*t gets fixed guys that take risks, and push themselves will remain a rarity. I would say it will become increasingly rare, but there's already only like 1 or 2 guys in the whole goddamn sport that test themselves now so I don't know how much worse it could get really.

Same with Wilder now who I'd wager would still KO the vast majority of the Heavyweight division.

aj and potentially wilder show one of the keys to making ppl care as much about losses------get right back in there in a good fight with a shot to redempetion.

part of the problem, is that if a fighter loses then so often they basically are totally protected the next couple years, which they cant regain nearly as much credibility with

if guys stay busy fighting good opposition afteer loses, then the losses become less costly. the ufc is great at this.

mma fans in general have a healthier attitude than boxing fans

To be fair to Lopez, he beat Lomachenko and unified the division at the age of 23.

The real legacy is leaving with your brain intact, a decent house, and some money in the bank I would suggest.

Years ago, one needed the big fights to make the big money. Today they make millions fighting less than threatening opponents. That is the issue plain and simple.

Certain sports such as boxing have become too commercially savvy.
Legacy is irrelevant to people, its all about the wonga. Boxing has also created this appeal for fans to be more interested in undefeated fighters than evenly matched good fighters. Then you have the current circus of famous non fighters fighting retired boxers.
If Legacy was important the so called Best Ever wouldn’t be fighting YouTube stars.
It’s also why fighters from yesteryear will typically get rated higher than modern era boxers.

Can’t argue with this. It’s the sane approach to life.

Wasn't it Sugar Ray Robinson who said that when he started he wanted to win trophies, then wanted to earn money. It was only once he had made enough money that he wanted to earn the trophies (accolades) again.

Money is more available to people who simply aren't that clever - increasingly there is absurd amounts of money to be made from being good at kicking a ball; boxing; riding a push bike .. even talking shlt on YouTube. And no amount of money is enough for some people who are not too clever and see it as some sort of hoarding to get as much as they can.

Most of us would be satisfied with £1 million .. retire, and have enough money to live the same lifestyle as you now enjoy and never have to worry about money ... But for some they need more

i think its human nature , that nothing is ever enough and for many people standards just keep getting higher the more we get.

you may make 20 million, but then now that dont seem all that fancy when you have it, and suddenly you feel like you need to match the 50 m guys. then once you get there, well f@ck me mate, there are some dudes with 100m, so why not you? then you get that, but you still aint a billionaire

This is it and if somebody calls you a chicken for not fighting such and such a fighter then well at least you can say "Yeah I might be a chicken but at least I'm a rich one"

Yeah boxing is so tough. Not many leave boxing with the above. There's a new book by Tris Dixon on brain damage in boxing. Seems a must read but bound to be a tough one.
