Great shout. Norton was undoubtedly the best heavyweight in the world after his win over Jimmy Young in November 1977. Unfortunately for him, Larry Holmes was breathing down his neck.

I don't think Henry Armstrong ever defended his lightweight title. Not sure about featherweight, think he had a series of non-title fights after winning it.

Surely this question only makes sense if you stick to fighters with not defences at all? Rather than fighters who have not defended one particular belt out of loads of others they've held.

Lavender Johnson win the vacant title then fought Chavez and ended up dying after complications, makes you wonder if he ever should have got the shot in the first place, just wasn’t at that level

Mexico’s Gregorio Vargas looked a million dollars taking out Paul Hogkinson, then ran into Kevin Kelley.

ya, otherwise it widens things too much , as there have been loads of champ in abc era to not defend one specific belt but do so for others

Fair enough, sorry, I had in mind that when Armstrong was around there was one title per division, but probably better not to widen the field!
