Paul Miles ID# 024859
Just a minor correction, and apologies for complete lack of links or evidence, but I knew Paul and he was actually from Walton-on-Thames in Surrey, not Essex. Thanks
Paul Miles
Re: Paul Miles
Decent amateur too, boxed for Foley ABC in Claygate and was def from Walton on Thames in Surrey.
England International and NABC champ too
Re: Paul Miles
Miles was better than his pro record suggests. I think he had about 80 amateur contests.
I sparred with him a few times and it felt like he had bricks in his gloves !
Went to his fights with Danny Quacoe, Paul Knights, Adrian Chase, Adrian Riley and Harry Dhami.
The 6 rounder with Knights was an absolute belter and I thought Miles nicked it. The draw with Riley was a travesty. Miles won it clearly IMO.
Dhami was too good though.
Paul went self-managed as soon as permissible and took on some very demanding contests. The guy had some balls on him

Re: Paul Miles
Are you from Claygate way? The Foley had a great gym in the pub of the same name! Small place but there was a decent field/park nearby too.THEBUTCH wrote: ↑07 Jun 2021, 21:31 Miles was better than his pro record suggests. I think he had about 80 amateur contests.

I think they have a much better equipped gym in Thames Ditton now, but I have never been.
Re: Paul Miles
No mate, but i was living in Epsom for a while and Paul & his trainer Dennis (who you probably knew) would use the amateur gym sometimes. Miles absolutely flattened my club mate (who was a good amateur himself) in a spar once and think he felt quite bad about it. I used to have my hands up for every second against Miles
I never actually knew that's where Foley ABC was based, but they had a good reputation at the time. Glad to hear they are still going
If you ever get a chance to see Miles' fight with Knights.....see it ! It was a gripping encounter and both of them hit the canvas. Miles was very disappointed not to get the decision, but the next time I saw him he said it could have gone either way.

Re: Paul Miles
I followed his career as we had met a few times and done some light sparring. I was surprised he didn't do better in the pro's as he was dedicated and not short of talent, but it demonstrates how good you have to be to do something.THEBUTCH wrote: ↑08 Jun 2021, 12:53 No mate, but i was living in Epsom for a while and Paul & his trainer Dennis (who you probably knew) would use the amateur gym sometimes. I guess because of his amateur success and that he was used to winning he didn't have the mentality, or capability, to tuck up and be negative when hurt. He was very much kill or be killed! He reminds me of another local boy, Matthew Barr in that way.
Re: Paul Miles
It absolutely does demonstrate how good you have to be to succeed in pro boxing and also have good backing....and some luck too !
I think going self-managed ASAP and not getting looked after made things tough for him, but I'm not sure he'd have had it any other way. Miles was very motivated and I believe he went for the win each and every time. He had ring smarts too, but wasn't one for backing down.
That's not a bad comparison with Barr. I would say Miles was more measured in his approach and Barr a bit more Kamikaze !
It's a shame Paul ran into Harry Dhami for the Southern Area Welterweight title. Dhami was in such good form. A lesser opponent and it's not beyond the realms of possibility that Miles could have won that title. When you look at the names on his record and when he boxed them it wasn't a surprise that Claude Abrams used to refer to Miles as a "good pro".
