All criticism of Tank is justified. He's Broner all over again, or at least only slightly better. He'll only win titles at 140 and 147 if they're careful as all hell who they match him with. He may not get by Barrios, and he won't dare fight Taylor.

The hype around him vs who he fights is absurd.

I get that his career has followed the cherry-pick for profits blueprint best executed by FMJ, but this is a huge jump up v a legit 140 contender who is big, strong, skilled and packs pop.

This is a legit risk.

That's kinda what's funny here. Even trying to take the safest route to a title at 140 I think he probably still gets beat here.

Gervonta Davis Unsure Of How Weight Will Feel 'Until I'm In There With A Full Blown 140'

The heaviest that Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis has weighed for a pro fight was 135 ½ pounds, though in a situation where he was the much bigger man in the ring.

No such advantage will be enjoyed by the reigning WBA junior lightweight titlist in his upcoming challenge of unbeaten secondary WBA junior welterweight titlist Mario Barrios. The two-division jump for Baltimore’s Davis is uncharted territory in his career, with Barrios likely to weigh 140 pounds only long enough to make weight and for the unbeaten San Antonio native to come in much bigger on fight night.

“I won’t know,” Davis admitted to assembled media when asked about handling the heavier weight during an open workout at Mayweather Boxing Club in Las Vegas. “I won’t know until I’m in there with a full-blown 140.”

Baltimore’s Davis (24-0, 23 KOs) has primarily fought at junior lightweight during his eight-plus year pro career, enjoying two title reigns at the weight while also claiming a secondary title at lightweight in a one-off move up in weight. That occasion came in December 2019, when Davis stopped Yuriorkis Gamboa in the 12th round of their Showtime headliner at State Farm Arena in Atlanta.

Davis will return to the same venue for literally the biggest challenge of his career, giving away more than four inches in height to the 5’10” Barrios, who has campaigned at junior welterweight since 2017. The 26-year-old was even pondering a move to welterweight earlier this year before landing the lucrative assignment versus Davis, who has made the necessary adjustments during training camp as he looks to test the junior welterweight waters.

“We’ve been sparring bigger guys and… I just want to say that I’m crackin’,” quipped Davis, who has stopped his last 15 opponents.

“Tank” is the best and most accurate nickname in boxing today.

Barrios is a major test for Tank. If he gets by him, there is no going back to mediocre fights. The marking time is over. It is primetime, big fights with big names.

Same thing for Barrios. If he can dismantle Tank, next stop is Ramirez/Prograis level.

The PPV price is set at $69.99. The last pay-per-view show Davis headlined cost $74.99.

He’s gonna keep averaging around 200k buys, he may have gotten lucky with the LSC fight, cus LSC has a decent following.

Until Tank fights an actual name, he ain’t making big bucks.

It doesn’t help anyone long term if it does only 100k buys or so. Davis should be fighting regularly on Fox/Showtime in front of loads of people. Everyone involved is just too greedy and short sighted.

There are 4 televised shows in the US next Saturday with one being PPV yet none this weekend. None of this is helping the sport over there.

Me too!
PPV my arse. You know, I was hot on Davis about two years ago, thought he could be the one to unify some belts. Boy was I wrong. Skips from one weight to another cherry picking soft targets, and now he is PPV?
No way, no how.

This is by far the best/most interesting fight of the weekend.. But would i pay for it with so much other free boxing around it? probably not. At least it has a trash UFC card thats morning time, so no competition there. I dont know if this will do 50,000 or 500,000 buys but it sure is an interesting fight.

Julian Williams Injured, Out Of Brian Mendoza Fight On Tank Davis-Mario Barrios Undercard

Julian Williams will have to wait yet a little longer for his comeback bout.

Boxing Scene has learned that Williams has suffered an injury to his left elbow while training that has forced him to withdraw from his upcoming fight against Brian Mendoza. Philadelphia’s Williams (27-2-1, 16 KOs, 1 NC) and Albuquerque’s Mendoza (19-1, 13 KOs) were supposed to meet in a 10-round junior middleweight match Saturday night on the Showtime Pay-Per-View undercard of the Gervonta Davis-Mario Barrios bout at State Farm Arena in Atlanta.

Williams, 31, hasn’t fought since he suffered a surprising fifth-round, technical-knockout defeat to Jeison Rosario in January 2020 at Temple University’s Liacouras Center in Philadelphia. The former IBF/IBO/WBA 154-pound champion was consistently listed as a 30-1 favorite to defeat the Dominican Republic’s Rosario in that optional title defense.

Williams changed trainers after that defeat, from BS.com contributor Stephen “Breadman” Edwards to Javan “Sugar Hill” Steward. He has been training with Steward since November in Las Vegas.

Williams was supposed to fight Mendoza in a FOX Sports main event December 26 in Los Angeles, but Williams contracted COVID-19 and his return to the ring was delayed.

It was unclear at the time this story was posted Sunday afternoon if a suitable substitute could be found for Mendoza on such short notice for the pay-per-view portion of Saturday’s card (9 p.m. EDT; $74.99).

In addition to Baltimore’s Davis (24-0, 23 KOs) moving up two weight classes to challenge San Antonio’s Barrios (26-0, 17 KOs) for his secondary WBA 140-pound championship in the 12-round main event, Showtime’s pay-per-view show will include an intriguing 12-round, 154-pound battle between Erickson Lubin (23-1, 16 KOs), of Orlando, Florida, and Rosario (20-2-1, 14 KOs).

Rosario will try to bounce back from losing the titles he won from Williams to Jermell Charlo (34-1, 18 KOs). Houston’s Charlo knocked out Rosario in the eighth round of Rosario’s last fight, which took place September 26 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Batyr Akhmedov (8-1, 7 KOs), a southpaw from Uzbekistan, also is scheduled to square off against Argenis Mendez (25-6-3, 12 KOs, 1 NC), of Yonkers, New York, in a 12-round, 140-pound WBA elimination match that’ll be part of this pay-per-view broadcast.

It's an interesting fight but I wonder if Regis Prograis had that wba strap, what Davis would've done? Fight Ismael Barroso for the wba gold strap?

Davis has hardly defended or even looked at unifications.
There's a reason for that. His opponents have to be very carefully picked or the bubble will burst. He's very popular on the internet, and amongst Twitter Boxing fans, but his flaws and shortcomings are obvious to me.

They must be obvious to his handlers to, who avoid any real challenges for him.

Even trying to be careful here they might've picked the wrong guy.
yeah hes got an 'air' about him now. However hes a huge puncher and very athletic, so i dont see people troubling him either way

I can’t overlook that Barrios is trained by Virgil hunter. I’ve watched some clips and he moved unnaturally. Hunter makes a fighter unnatural in my opinion.
