You don't have to like him, I don't particularly, but that is a ridiculously one sided assessment of an excellent career. Nigel Benn openly tells people he quit against Collins and didn't even train for that bout and gets laughs and applause! Billy has lost to the P4P no 1. He didn't get hit once in his career and quit immediately. He qualified for the Olympics at 17. All these things still happened whether people like him or not.

The major difference is that Benn proved himself many times prior to the Collins defeat; I am pretty sure everyone knew that was a washed up Benn around then.
Where as BJS has never demonstrated that never-say-die attitude; even though he promised us he would if required ... well it was required in that round Canelo landed that uppercut ... and BJS panicked and quit immediately.

He didn't. He saw the round out. There's no point discussing it on here because everyone hates Billy. But if that's the worst 'quit' you've ever seen in your life you clearly haven't seen much boxing. Tyson biting Holyfields ear was a quit, AJ certainly was, Benn definitely, Eubank tried to get himself disqualified against Sherry because he knew he was getting beat, although saved by bent ref and judges. Oscar, Hatton, loads of others have question marks against defeats.

If you were shown footage of the 8th rd with no prior knowledge or opinion of the fighters involved or comments they had made and it was explained to you that his eye socket was smashed by that punch then would you still have the same opinion of him ? Can it not be argued that he showed a fair degree of bravery to get to the end of the round with a bloodthirsty Canelo trying to seriously hurt and humiliate him ? Admittedly not as much bravery as Bill himself claimed to have but still an admirable amount of bravery.

Hell of a surgeon to get Saunders patched up, flown back to the Uk and ferrying his little angels round in about 2 weeks flat, with his eye looking remarkably good.

I personally think if he retires it won't help his legacy at all when it come to the fight against Alvarez and how it ended. Trouble is, he's lost his aura now and regardless. I think a lot of fighters would fancy their chances against him now if he was to carry on.

There are guys on here much better qualified than me to comment so I’m prepared to be corrected but I’m guessing that the amount of pain one is in from a smashed eye socket might well cause the victim to need to call upon far greater reserves of bravery than if he were merely concussed
