Keith Thurman vs. Shawn Porter - Fall 2021?

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Sources: A rematch between former welterweight champions Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter is being discussed for the fall. Their 2016 meeting was an excellent fight, one of the best of the year. Thurman retained his 147-pound title with a close decision victory. Both with PBC,” said @MikeCoppinger.

Former WBA/WBC 147-lb champion Thurman (29-1, 22 KOs) defeated Porter (31-3-1, 17 KOs) by a narrow 12 round unanimous decision in June 2016, winning by a 115-113 x 3 score.

Porter wanted a rematch with Thurman after the defeat, but he wasn’t interested until now. This is a 50-50 fight right now, as both guys have been dealing with inactivity due to the pandemic.

Thurman vs. Porter II isn’t quite as big as the August 21 fight between Errol Spence and Manny Pacquiao, but it’s still an excellent match-up for 2021.

So I assume Errol Spence Jr. faces Yordenis Ugas (and fellow PBC stablemate) immediately after Pacquiao, followed by a unified title defence against the winner of Thurman-Porter (probably rematching Shawn, since Keith might be shot)?

In the meantime, what's Terence Crawford going to do whilst all these PBC guys are fighting each other?

Porter will fornicate him up now I think. Thurman isn’t old in years but he is 5 years past prime.

i wouldnt say im a purist, i usually enjoy lots of action and kos, and am not one of the hipsters who go on about who beautiful watching some dude hit and run with flicking jabs for 12 is

maybe because he falls a lot, gets involved in smothering, and often his fights lack ongoing flow/ rhythm

I don't get real into his fights either. He always strikes me as a slightly lesser version of Tim Bradley, and I never got all that excited for Tim Bradley's fights either.

He's a good fighter, I respect the guy, but he's pretty much a guarantee not to win by KO or get KO'ed in a major fight so that sucks a lot of the potential excitement out of it.

Also let me point out for the record that I voted Thurman by Decision in the Poll, but I had a f*cking brain fart moment there, and meant to vote Porter by Decision. So subtract 1 from Thurman, and add 1 for Porter in your minds

Of course everyone seems to think Thurman is washed up now because of his inactivity and the Pac loss, but I think he may be a live dog in this one. Mainly due to the way Spence wanted to slug it out with Porter, which was a stupid strategy imo, but I think Thurman beat Porter by a more clear margin. He's a smart fighter, and unless you are a huge body puncher, I actually think Thurman has a good chance of winning.

He has the ability. I just don't think his heart is in the game anymore.

I know exactly what you mean. I don't get too excited about Porter either, but I will say that when I DO actually watch his fights, I am continually surprised at how engaging and fun his fights often are. Yes, he has kind of a rough, physical style, but I don't think it's overly awkward or boring, personally.
