Gilberto Ramirez vs. Sulivan Barrera - July 9, 2021

Double-Header Announced

Months after nearly ruining one show, Joseph ‘JoJo’ Diaz has arrived to salvage another.

The former junior lightweight titlist has agreed to next face Dominican Republic’s Javier Fortuna on July 9 at a venue to be determined, two sources with knowledge of the situation informed Boxing Scene. Diaz accepted the fight in place of unbeaten lightweight contender Ryan Garcia, who withdrew due to personal reasons.

Also on the show, Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez (41-0, 27KOs) will make his Golden Boy Promotions debut. The former WBO super middleweight titlist—who now campaigns at light heavyweight—will face veteran contender Sullivan Barrera, with the fight having been in development for nearly two months.

The Athletic’s Mike Coppinger was the first to reveal the development, via social media.

Diaz (31-1-1, 15KOs) went on record in late April of his intentions to next face Fortuna (36-2-1, 25KOs) once the opportunity and date became available. The 2012 U.S. Olympian and former IBF junior lightweight has remained in the gym in the weeks following his latest fight, a 12-round draw with Tajikistan’s Shavkat Rakhimov in a fight that cost him the title one day prior after badly missing weight for their February 13 DAZN headliner.

The show moved forward, with Rakhimov accepting an undisclosed financial compensation package in agreeing to the new terms. Rakhimov was unable to claim the title that night, though will have a second shot when he faces Japan’s Kenichi Ogawa also in July on a separate show.

Meanwhile, Diaz will test the 135-pound waters against a dangerous foe.

Fortuna is a former junior lightweight titlist who has waited more than a year for a shot at the WBC lightweight strap, watching at least one title fight and two interim title bouts fall through all during and since the pandemic. The lone ring appearance for the Dominican southpaw in that time came last November, scoring a 6th round stoppage of Antonio Lozada last November, three months after plans for an August showdown with Jorge Linares fell through after the former three-division titlist tested positive for COVID-19.

Ramirez now has a new home for his first fight with Golden Boy, which was originally targeted for June. The Mexican southpaw—who turns 30 on June 19—was initially slated to appear on the Triller Fight Club Pay-Per-View featuring lineal lightweight champion and WBA/IBF/WBO titlist Teofimo Lopez (16-0, 12KOs), but was pulled to instead enhance the July 9 show.

Miami’s Barrera (22-3, 14KOs)—originally from Guantanamo, Cuba—has not fought since a 10-round points loss to Jesse Hart in their June 2019 crossroads bout.

A location has yet to be finalized for the event. The card was originally due to take place at a venue in the greater Los Angeles area when Garcia was due to headline. Such plans remain in discussion as this goes to publish.

If it actually comes off, this should be a decent show.

Right. There're already some rumors of Bivol fighting Bolotnics next. Hopefully that won't happen. Bivol hasn't faced any of note in a couple of years.

Sullivan Barrera is 39½ years of age and only boasts one victory within the last 3½ years over a journeyman. He’s also been inactive for two years.

For sure, the Cuban might have been a decent fighter four years ago, but his time has come and gone. Barrera is now only a has-been… and at his best, he was probably only a fringe contender. But that’s ancient history.

I would have hoped the calibre of Zurdo’s opposition would have dramatically improved since his departure from Top Rank, but I was clearly wrong.

When he was with Bob Arum, I considered Gilberto Ramirez to be the super-middleweight equivalent of Terence Crawford.

Even though he was previously regarded as the top-dog at 168lbs (by The RING), Top Rank wouldn’t (or couldn’t) orchestrate any meaningful fights for him.

In fact, Bob Arum wouldn’t even allow him to compete in the WBSS.

And it’s sad to say that Zurdo’s victories over Jesse Hart and Arthur Abraham are the only highlights of a particularly weak resume.

Don’t get me wrong, Sullivan Barrera would normally be considered a moderately decent stay-busy type opponent for any of today’s top-ten world-rated 175lb-ers, but how many of those type of fights does Gilberto Ramirez really need until he finally steps up to the plate and faces elite-level opposition?

Gilberto Ramirez is with Golden Boy, isn’t he? So he’s aligned with DAZN, which means fights against the likes of Callum Smith, Dmitry Bivol and Joshua Buatsi should be easy to make, since they’re broadcaster stablemates, but instead he’s being spoon-fed an over-the-hill inactive has-been.

Announced

“There are a lot of major players in the light heavyweight division right now, and Gilberto Ramirez is ready to demonstrate that he is very much among them,” said Oscar De La Hoya, chairman and CEO of Golden Boy. “Sullivan Barrera possesses a decorated amateur background and has a lot of experience in this weight class, but Ramirez is totally committed to becoming a two-division champion.

“Zurdo’s world title campaign and his journey to 50-0 will start on July 9.”

“I'm excited to be headlining this show in Los Angeles with Golden Boy Promotions,” said Ramirez, who reigned as a WBO super middleweight titlist from 2016-2019 before moving up to light heavyweight. “It's going to be a great night of boxing with fans back in the stands. I've always enjoyed fighting here, and I can't wait to put on a show to continue my hunt for the light heavyweight championship.

“I appreciate Oscar and the Golden Boy family for their love and support, and I look will forward to a great night of boxing.”

““I’m excited to have the opportunity to headline such a big card against Gilberto Ramirez,” said Barrera, who owns a July 2017 win over current WBO light heavyweight titlist Joe Smith Jr. “I know that my opponent is a former world champion with a lot of experience and that he will come very much prepared.

“However, I feel that I have faced much better opposition. I’ve also spent my entire career in the light heavyweight division, something that will be totally new for him. It will be a difficult fight, but I will walk away with my hands raised in victory.”

As previously announced, the co-main event will feature Joseph “Jo Jo” Diaz Jr. (31-1-1, 15 KOs) of South El Monte, California taking on Javier “El Abejon” Fortuna (36-2-1, 25 KOs) of La Romana, Dominican Republic in a 12-round lightweight bout.

A full undercard of action will be announced shortly.

Zurdo vs. Barrera, presented by Golden Boy Promotions, will be streamed exclusively on DAZN, live from Banc of California Stadium, home of the Los Angeles Football Club (pro soccer), located in downtown Los Angeles.

“I’m very excited to make my debut with Golden Boy,” Ramirez said. “LA’s the home to many Latinos and I can’t wait to share the moment with my people.

“Every fight is the most important fight of my career. Obviously, the goal is to dominate the division and become world champ, and I do believe this match-up versus Barrera is a step in the right direction.”

“Barrera is a tough Cuban veteran with world-class experience,” Ramirez added. He’s fought the best in the past and shown why he’s been in many title fights against them. He even had a one-sided victory over the current WBO champions, Joe Smith, Jr.”

Right. There're already some rumors of Bivol fighting Bolotnics next. Hopefully that won't happen. Bivol hasn't faced any of note in a couple of years.
Zurdo hasn't fought anyone of note ever, in 40 flippin fights!
Barrera got beat by Hart who got beat (twice) by Zurdo
Now that Aduckus Chickenson has retired, and Wilder finally fought and lost (twice) to a decent opponent, this leaves Zurdo as the #1 motherducker in boxing

Shouldent Ramirez of been mandatory for the WBO belt and therefor being the one that fought for the vacant title with joe smith? he had defended the WBO 168 belt a bunch, so i thought they got mando when they stepped up. Like craw vs horn and Usyk vs AJ.

Interestingly he already has a win against Maxim Vlasov, who in my opinion beat jo smith for the vacant WBO 175 belt couple of months ago.

That seems very unlikely to me. You are mandatory for arguably the weakest champion, which would pay very well. And if you win your inline for absolutely mental canelo cash in one of the biggest Mex vs Mex fights of all time.
I cant think of anything worth passing that up for unless he just wants to fade into obscurity and keep his unblemished record.

this is zurdo youre talking about, he's been specializing in being irrelevant lately. kov is a cherry pick, joe smith ya he's limited but he bring the f@cking heat :box:

here's something from couple months ago about him talking about kov. also, zurdo signed with golden boy. kov's last fight (before failing ped test) was going to be vs golden boy fighter bek

Ah shit he is golden boy now. I guess steering for the canelo fight doesn't really matter anymore. i guess do as you wish then. fighting smith for the WBO belt loses a ton of apeall if you cant sell that belt to canelo...

A Lucian Bute type unproven hype job beats an unaccomplished Dereck Chisora styled has-been.

There’s nothing here to be of any interest to anyone.

In terms of the world stage, it’s a meaningless fight

Good fight this, i know Ramirez deserves a lot of stick because of how his career has panned out lately, dont think ive seen him since the Hart rematch which is who i seen Barrera fight and lose to last, Barrera is a bonafide Light Heavyweight and he's a test for Ramirez no doubt but i still really rate Zurdo and fancy him in a 116-112 type of fight
