Jake Paul vs Tyron Woodley to be Paul’s first Showtime fight, set to be announced before Mayweather-Paul

Jake Paul’s boxing career will continue on at Showtime as he faces another ex-UFC fighter.

Social media celebrity Jake Paul’s boxing career is looking set to continue, as Mike Coppinger reports that Paul will face UFC veteran Tyron Woodley in his next outing, with the fight set to be announced officially on Friday, two days before Jake’s brother Logan headlines a pay-per-view with Floyd Mayweather.

This will be the first fight for Paul (3-0, 3 KO) as part of his new deal with Showtime, making the jump from Triller, who broadcast his first two pay-per-view bouts. The 24-year-old Jake, the younger of the Paul brothers, last fought on April 17, beating Ben Askren via first round TKO in Atlanta.

But while the 39-year-old Woodley comes from the same sport as Askren, they’re very different fighters. Nobody is going to confuse Woodley (19-7 in mixed martial arts) with a world class boxer, but nobody should be confusing Jake Paul with one, either, and Woodley is certainly a better boxer than Askren, who was always really bad at boxing even by MMA standards, where Georges St-Pierre became lauded as a genius boxer because he figured out you can jab people.

Woodley has lost his last four fights, all in UFC, and hasn’t actually won a fight since 2018. He is also notable for a small role in the movie Cut Throat City, where — spoiler alert — his character gets his penis bitten by a raccoon.

The matchup is not a surprise, as Woodley was part of Askren’s team in April, and had some beef in the locker room with Paul’s crew, including (ex?) boxer J’Leon Love, as Woodley was the one overseeing Paul getting his hands wrapped. It’s certainly the most threatening fight Paul has signed to date, if indeed it goes through, which brings with it a chance for Jake to gain a bit more credibility with “his haters” or doubters, and also the glimmer of hope for said “haters”/doubters that Woodley might be enough to expose him.

Like this. Seems pretty even, at least Woodley has shown good hands befor (not good boxing though)...

People keep complaining about him not fighting a boxer. he is selling ppv fights, he can’t take the normal opponent path...let’s not pretend Woodley is worse than the journeymen prospects fight in there first few fights anyway, it’s just those fights generate a few thousand not a few million.... Jake Paul isn’t great but he could obviously go out there an beat 10 rankkk journeymen like most boxers do, But would people pay to see it?

I if he wins would like to see him go after McGregor next. if he were to win that then he has kinda finnished the side show and is left with either a mayweather cash grab, or my preferred path of Marcelo wilder, John Parker and tommy fury...

Look forward to seeing grumpy people hate this...

His opponents HAVE improved.

Fellow Youtuber
Former NBA Star
MMA fighter (who was more of a wrestler)
Former UFC world champion (on a bad run)

But's he's fighting pro's now, just not actual boxers.

That’s as good a progression as

0-12 boxer
0-15 boxer
1-24-1 boxer
2-17 boxer

Hell Woodley is probably better than a couple of guys with paper thin winning records... I mean lovejoy got to 20-0 20kos...

Ali Abdelaziz Claims [url=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chael_Sonnen]Chael Sonnen Will Fight Jake Paul Next [/url]

“The rumors are not true in fact Jake Paul’s next fight is going to be against @ChaelSonnen and the winner is going to take on iron Mike Tyson,” Abdelaziz wrote. “Nobody has better knowledge of these negotiations than me and I’m telling you everything.”

Sonnen responded to Abdelaziz’s claim by saying he is down to fight all three men.

“I’ll beat Iron Mike, Jake Paul and T wood all in the same night with any rules they want. I’m in Ali,” Sonnen wrote. “My only condition is they MUST guarantee Mike.”

Looks like Abdelaziz is talking crap!

The pair will meet in a 190-pound catchweight bout on Aug. 28 from a location to be announced.

Sky Sports have published an article.

Guessing they're gonna have it on PPV.

The problem is that he needs big-ish names for his PPVs and any top real boxers would kill him.

He almost had to fight these MMA guys… if he was really interested in how good he really is or could be….he’d fight guys like this

https://boxrec.com/en/proboxer/42021

But there is no market for that.

I hope that’s true….but will they really go for him fighting a no name local clubfighter guy who is like 15-12.

If they want him to fight a top 50 guy in his weight division, he’d get smoked.

An old wrestler on the losing streak in MMA, but at least he can bang. It can become competetive, but still looks more like another cherry.

If Woodley gets KO’d will that be the single worst decline of an athlete?

Woodley was 170lb world champ, top 5 p4p. He has now lost 4/4 in rough fashion, but at least they were all top levle and his chin has held up.

I personally think if he loses bad it will be the worst decline (not from health issues) i can recall, it would be like if usain bolt had turned up to rio olympics injury free and ran a 12.5 second 100m....

Michael Bisping was offered $500k to fight Jake Paul. He turned it down.

“I’m happy for him,” Bisping said Sunday on his podcast “Believe You Me.”

“I don’t know what [Woodley is] going to get paid, but I’ll tell you right now. I was offered $500,000 to fight Jake Paul, so I would assume it’s probably more since the fight’s happening. So good for him. He might go out there and might be getting $1 million, and I couldn’t be happier for Tyron, because he really deserves it.”

Mayweather Contacts Woodley, Wants To Help Prepare Him For Jake Paul

Five division world champion Floyd Mayweather is willing to train MMA veteran Tyron Woodley for his August pro boxing debut against Youtube star Jake Paul.

This coming Sunday night in Miami, the 44-year-old Mayweather will return to the ring in an exhibition fight with Jake's older brother, 26-year-old Logan Paul, on Showtime pay-per-view.

Paul vs. Woodley will also be carried by Showtime Pay-Per-View.

Back in April, Jake Paul stopped Woodley's close friend, MMA veteran Ben Askren, in a single round.

Woodley, a former five time UFC champion, is viewed as the toughest fight of Paul's career.

Mayweather wants Woodley to come to Las Vegas to get properly prepared at the Mayweather Boxing Club.

“Well, give me Tyron Woodley. I make sure I get in camp and train him for this fight,” Mayweather said. “I want Tyron Woodley to come to Las Vegas and work with us.”

Woodley would later confirm that he was indeed approached by Mayweather and his team - who expressed their interest in helping him get ready for Paul.

“[Mayweather and his team] just texted me, let’s do it,” Woodley said. “I just talked to him today so for sure, why would I not train with the greatest boxer of all time? He’s already my dog and we’ve been talking about training anyway, so for sure. I’m definitely going to take him up on that.”

Last month, Mayweather and Jake Paul were involved in a wild scuffle - when Paul snatched Mayweather's cap off his head and attempted to run away with it. Both teams got involved and some punches were exchanged, with Paul suffering a black eye.

He’s a celebrity boxer making money from fighting other celebrities. It’s completely understandable the opponents he’s had. However seeing the fights, seeing him sparring and training which are at a high level, if this guy walked into your amateur gym after 3 fights you’d be well chuffed. He can punch, and has good accuracy. He’s sharp for a guy who’s been boxing for only 3 years.

Trainer: Woodley is Excellent Challenge For Jake Paul's Fourth Fight

Last month, it was announced that YouTube star/influencer Jake Paul (3-0) will return to the ring against former UFC champion Tyron Woodley in the summer. The bout will be Paul’s first under his new agreement with Showtime.

The fight will be contested in a 20’ x 20’ ring and will be distributed by Showtime’s pay-per-view arm Fans are expected to be in attendance at the time of the writing of this article.

This will be Paul’s fourth professional boxing match while it will be Woodley’s first foray in the square circle. Flores feels that this is the perfect fight for Paul at this stage in his career.

“This is an excellent challenge for a kid going into his fourth professional fight,” said Paul’s trainer, former cruiserweight world title contender BJ Flores.

Woodley’s UFC career ended on a sour note but in his prime was one of the top fighters in the sport with good power in both hands.

Meanwhile the 24-year-old Paul takes the sport very seriously and has dedicated himself to his craft for over a year and a half and has won all of his fights by stoppage.

Flores said that they respect Woodley and what he brings to the table but believe that Paul’s abilities and work ethic will lead him to victory.

“He's a decent striker. He is very capable and definitely somebody that we are taking very serious. Jake likes to talk but nobody knows the kind of dog he is in the gym. We will not be outworked,” Flores told Boxing Scene.

BJ Flores: As Soon as Jake Paul Touches Woodley, The Fight is Over

It was recently announced that YouTube star Jake Paul (3-0) and former top MMA fighter Tyron Woodley will face each other this summer. August 28th has been mentioned as a possible date for the Showtime pay-per-view.

Woodley is very confident. So confident in fact that he doesn’t believe Paul will make it to the final bell.

“I think [round] three. First round sounds cocky, sounds dope, but I just know that if I’m fighting Tyron Woodley, everyone is going to tell him to cover up, weather the storm, clinch him, grab him, keep him away from you, stay at distance, watch out for the right hand," Woodley recently told Michael Bisping.

However, Paul’s trainer BJ Flores didn’t find Woodley’s comments to be assuming. He believes that Woodley’s mouth is writing a check that he won’t be able to cash when they meet in the ring.

“Tyron keeps talking about, ‘everyone is gonna tell Jake to hold on, cover up, stay away’ and earlier made comments about ‘Jake better not bitch out when he sees me training.’ These comments show exactly what will be Tyron’s downfall. His giant ego,” Flores told Boxing Scene.

“First of all, nobody is intimidated or scared of Tyron. We will be coming straight to him in the very first round and his right hand or any ‘traps’ he plans on setting aren't gonna save him. I'm telling you, as soon as Jake touches him with a clean shot, this fight will be over.”

Flores, who is a former world title challenger, feels that Woodley’s is tailor made for Paul. The 24-year-old has devoted himself to the sweet science for the past 24 months and has sparred with several top boxers.

“Look, I’m the one who told Jake’s manager to take this fight. Jake will fight anyone and we all agreed within 5 minutes so it was just a matter of getting Tyron to agree. He did and now we got a fight on our hands.

“If Tyron thinks he punches harder than Jake in 10 ounce gloves, he is badly mistaken. Tyron’s ego will be a huge advantage for us with him thinking we are worried about his power.

“Jake will be the aggressor in this fight 100%. The second Tyron feels some of those straight shots in the opening seconds of the first round, he will realize he is in a real fight,”
Flores said.
