What really is the biggest upset in boxing?
What really is the biggest upset in boxing?
Tyson - Douglas always get mentioned, and I understand why but what else if any would you put number 1?
Re: What really is the biggest upset in boxing?
Without looking i thought Tyson v Douglas. Honeyghan v Curry was also a massive upset. Lewis v Rahman also.

I think as SRR is generally considered the greatest fighter ever, Randy Turpin beating him was a massive upset. Turpin had never been past 8 rounds and SRR was undefeated in 90 fights.

Tyson v Williams something different to what’s been said. As past it Mike Tyson was everyone still had him to bang out Williams.

Re: What really is the biggest upset in boxing?
Us Brits have had some great huge ones for a tiny island; Turpin-Robinson, Laing-Duran, McGuigan-Pedroza, Honeyghan-Curry, Benn-McClellan, Hatton-Tszyu, and Fury-Klitschko.
Re: What really is the biggest upset in boxing?
In a world title fight Tyson v Douglas has to be right there but during a world title fight when it certainly was going one way you have to say Graham v Jackson was an effing shock
Re: What really is the biggest upset in boxing?
I would also like to say Benn v Watson was quite a shock until you explored each boxers record at the time and difference in quality of wins.
Re: What really is the biggest upset in boxing?
I think the heavyweight always get priority over subjects like this so my question was kinda like a lb for lb thing if that makes sense.
I’m liking the Foreman Ali one at the minute
great call

Ruiz - AJ was quite a shock
Re: What really is the biggest upset in boxing?
I don't think anyone expected Oliver McCall knocking out Lennox
Re: What really is the biggest upset in boxing?
Prescott/Khan.

Re: What really is the biggest upset in boxing?
in terms of profile and historical significance, tyson-douglas must surely be right up there and strong case for number 1
in terms of betting odds, im sure that rando journeymen have upset 100-1 type faves before

Maybe so… but no one expected Prescott to do that to Khan.Boxerbeetle wrote: ↑02 Jul 2021, 16:37Nah, Khan was an accident waiting to happen from the get-go, the only surprise to me was that it took so long.
I remember the promotors before hand getting stick for putting Khan in with an unknown.
He was a 20/1 on at least.
It’s not the biggest upset of all time, definitely… but those that are have already been mentioned so I came up with something different.
Khan was that much of a favourite that I didn’t even watch the fight and I’m from Bolton, and was in the same class as Khan at school.
Re: What really is the biggest upset in boxing?
I'll have to check it out. Minor fights like British titles never made it down here back then. I saw Eubank vs Benn because it was for a world title, that was a goodie.
Re: What really is the biggest upset in boxing?
Benn v Watson was a phenomenal fight. Very few gave Watson a chance. Fair play to Benn for learning from this fight and going on to be a better fighter.
