Tugstsogt Nyambayar Replaces Gamboa As Colbert’s Opponent July 3 On Showtime

Chris Colbert has a much younger, fresher opponent for his upcoming title defense than Yuriorkis Gamboa.

Boxing Scene has learned that featherweight contender Tugstsogt Nyambayar has agreed to move up to the junior lightweight division on short notice to challenge Colbert on July 3. Nyambayar will fight for Colbert’s WBA interim 130-pound championship in the 12-round main event of a Showtime Championship Boxing broadcast from Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.

Nyambayar is a featherweight, but the 28-year-old Mongolian is 11 years younger than Gamboa. The Cuban born-Gamboa suffered rib and heel injuries while training in Las Vegas recently and withdrew from his scheduled fight with Colbert late last week.

In his most recent appearance, Nyambayar (12-1, 9 KOs) beat Cobia Breedy (15-1, 5 KOs) by split decision in a 12-round featherweight fight September 19 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. The 2012 Olympian’s lone loss as a professional came against WBC featherweight champion Gary Russell Jr. (31-1, 18 KOs), who beat Nyambayar by unanimous decision in their 12-rounder in February 2020 at PPL Center in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

The 39-year-old Gamboa has won world titles in three weight classes, but the 2004 Olympic gold medalist is well past his prime.

Unbeaten WBC world lightweight champ Devin Haney (26-0, 15 KOs) dominated Gamboa in the Cuban-born boxer’s most recent fight. Gamboa lost all 12 rounds to Haney on two of three scorecards November 7 at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

Gervonta Davis (24-0, 23 KOs) stopped Gamboa in the 12th round of Gamboa’s previous fight, which took place in December 2019 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta.

Brooklyn’s Colbert, 24, produced probably his most impressive performance in his last fight. He dominated Panama’s Jaime Arboleda (16-2, 13 KOs) on his way to an 11th-round stoppage December 12 at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Showtime’s telecast July 3 will feature a 12-round WBA lightweight elimination match between the Dominican Republic’s Michel Rivera (20-0, 13 KOs) and Spain’s Jon Fernandez (21-1, 8 KOs). The Gervonta Davis-Mario Barrios bout, Showtime Pay-Per-View’s main event Saturday night at State Farm Arena, also will be replayed as part of the July 3 broadcast.

Press Release | Rivera vs. Fernandez set for July 3rd

Rivera vs. Fernandez set for Showtime on July 3rdRivera vs. Fernandez set for Showtime on July 3rd

On Saturday, July 3rd, at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, in a Premier Boxing Champions event, Showtime Championship Boxing's co-feature will see undefeated lightweight Michel Rivera battling Jon Fernández in a WBA title eliminator. The telecast will also feature highlights of undefeated 140 pounder Richardson Hitchins squaring off against Darwin Price in a ten-round duel. The event is promoted by TGB Promotions. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at AXS.com. Hitchins vs. Price is co-promoted with Mayweather Promotions.

Born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and now fighting out of Miami, Rivera (20-0, 13 KOs) burst onto the scene in 2019 making his U.S. debut with a victory over Juan Rene Tellez. The 23 year-old continued his ascent in 2020, adding a stoppage win against Fidel Maldonado Jr. and a unanimous decision triumph against LaDarius Miller. Most recently, Rivera stepped back into the ring to knock out Anthony Mercado in February of this year.

“I can’t wait to be showcasing my skills once again on July 3rd,” said Rivera. “Fernández will be bringing his A-game and that’s exactly what I want. My coach Herman Caicedo and I have been zeroing in on the best approach to this fight and I’m excited to execute it. Jon is a rough and tough fighter and probably the best fighter I’ve faced to this point and I’m looking forward to the challenge. I know that I will be fighting for a world title soon, so I’m just staying focused and disciplined until that time comes.”

The 25 year-old Fernández (21-1, 18 KOs) enters this bout on a five-fight winning streak following his only career blemish, a decision loss to O’Shaquie Foster in 2018 on ShoBox: The New Generation. A native of Bilbao, Spain, Fernández will fight in the U.S. for the fourth time on July 3. Fernández has been mentored by boxing great Sergio Martinez and will look to put himself back in position for a world title against Rivera. In his last fight, Fernández knocked out Aristides Perez in the first-round of their February 2020 clash.

“The fans are going to enjoy this fight with Rivera very much,” said Fernández. “Both of us are going to give our all in the ring for the opportunity to become a champion. This is the kind of fight that boxing is all about. Our division is full of great fighters, so you need to fight the best to be the best. My training is going very well and I believe that at this moment, I am in the prime of my career.”

A native of Brooklyn, Hitchins (12-0, 5 KOs) turned pro in 2017 after representing Haiti at the 2016 Olympics. The 23-year-old has flashed impressive skills as he’s amassed an unbeaten record in the pro ranks, which is the product of an extensive amateur career. In his last outing, Hitchins scored a career-best victory, as he earned a decision over former world champion Argenis Mendez. Hitchins has increased his competition in winning 10-round decisions in his last three fights.

"After my last fight in December, I got right back in the ring and have been training and tweaking things to help me really get to that star level,” said Hitchins. “I’ve always had the tools, but people are just now recognizing my talents. Each opponent has brought something different out of me, and I plan to keep rising to the occasion and putting on a show for the fans.”

Price (17-1, 10 KOs) returned to the ring in April to knock out Saul Corral in the fifth round. His previous outing had come in December 2019 when he suffered a knee injury that forced him to take a TKO loss against Malik Hawkins in a fight Price led on the scorecards. Originally from St. Louis and now fighting out of Houston, Price was a standout track and field runner at Grambling State University before turning pro and winning his first 16 fights.

“Every dream has a process and a price tag,” said Price. “Those who embrace the process and pay the price, live the dream. Those who don’t, just dream. I can’t wait to get back in the ring on July 3 and put on a great performance.”

“This lineup on July 3 features highly-touted rising stars in tough matchups against opponents looking to make statements of their own,”
said Tom Brown, President of TGB Promotions. “Chris Colbert has been impressive fight after fight, and he will have a big test against the always-tough Tugstsogt Nyambayar. Also facing perhaps the toughest test of his career, Michel Rivera will enter the ring in an exciting matchup against contender Jon Fernández. This is a card that is lined up to deliver drama all night long.”

Rooting for Nayambar but cant see him winning. Colbert should win a fairly comfortable decision. Not taking anything away from Nayambar but I just dont see anything he does that Colbert doesn't do better. Especially that Tug is going to be the smaller man his strength will be neutralized and hes also going to be slower.

Chris Colbert - Upgrades and Opportunities

We may look back one day and have a good laugh at what we didn’t know.

It wouldn’t be the first time.

In the last year or so, the idea of a possible new fabulous foursome around lightweight fired up plenty of imaginations. It may play out to early expectations. Teofimo Lopez, Gervonta Davis, Devin Haney, and Ryan Garcia have all held up their end so far.

The 23-year old Lopez (16-0, 12 KO) has the best credentials in the ring so far, capturing the lineal lightweight crown from Vasyl Lomachenko last year. Davis (26-0, 25 KO) has emerged as the biggest star of the bunch so far, winning three major titles at Jr. lightweight and, following a knockout of Mario Barrios last week, staking a claim to be regarded in the top ten of all three divisions from 130-140 pounds. Haney (26-0, 15 KO) recently overcame late adversity to defeat former lightweight titlist Jorge Linares and Garcia (21-0, 18 KO) came off the floor to stop sturdy Luke Campbell.

It’s a nice start.

One day, the four of them will even start fighting each other.

Time is on their side. Davis, at 26, is the oldest of the bunch. Garcia and Haney, at 22, are just past drinking age.

So what might there be to laugh about in retrospect?

The laugh might be in not seeing what was right in front of us. The future four might not be the right four at all.

Certainly some of them will be, but are we sure about all four? 24-year old Shakur Stevenson (16-0, 8 KO), a 2016 Olympic Silver medalist competing at Jr. lightweight with a featherweight belt already on the shelf, has the frame to compete at least as high as Jr. welterweight. Does anyone feel sure a foursome can develop near Stevenson’s weight that doesn’t include him?

Another candidate goes to scratch this Saturday (Showtime, 9 PM EST).

24-year old Chris Colbert (15-0, 6 KO) enters the ring this weekend off one of the better performances of his young career. Colbert battled past a game Jaime Arboleda for an eleventh round stoppage in a crowd pleasing affair. Colbert doesn’t have the knockout numbers some of his peers do but he’s got plenty of everything else.

Colbert has fast hands and feet, excellent reflexes, and the height and length to compete with any of his peers. Colbert also has the gift of gab.

Colbert caused a bit of a stir on social media this week when he commented on and took shots at heavyweight Deontay Wilder in a video interview at Fight Hype with Nestor Gibbs of Tha Boxing Voice. Regardless whether one agreed or disagreed with Colbert’s sentiments, one thing was abundantly clear.

Colbert can talk.

Eventually, that will mean talking about someone notable within 100 pounds of him for the sake of putting butts in seats. Along with physical tools, it’s not a bad attribute to have. Long term, Colbert may have as much star potential as anyone near his weight.

This weekend, Colbert also has a dance partner to tell us more about his fistic substance.

Colbert was originally slated for one of boxing’s more mundane rituals, a comparison shopping match with a faded veteran in the form of Yuriorkis Gamboa. The 39-year old Gamboa hasn’t had a truly notable win in years and wasn’t expected to win here. The assumed point, viscerally, was for viewers to be able to compare Colbert’s performance to the outings Davis and Haney had against Gamboa.

Gamboa went rounds with both, leaving neither with a banner night. If Colbert had outperformed them, stylistically or in terms of the length of the contest, Colbert would have had something to talk about while looking for bigger game. It’s all quite predictable but part of the process everyone goes through.

A Gamboa training injury appears to have resulted in an upgrade. It’s still comparison shopping, but of a more dangerous variety.

Two fights ago, 29-year old Tugstogy Nyambayar (12-1, 9 KO) lost a clear but respectable decision to the excellent WBC featherweight titlist Gary Russell Jr. The 2012 Olympic Silver Medalist is tough, experienced, and has enough pop to be a real threat this weekend. If Colbert can follow his performance against Arboleda with a similar night against Nyambayar, the intrigue around his weight class, give or take a division or two, only increases.

This is an opportunity for Colbert to remind everyone that this new generation has yet to truly unfold. It hasn’t really even started yet.

The desire to think we’re seeing history unfold, to lend hasty significance to stories still being told, might be more intense in this constant content era than ever. Boxing has had several notable multi-man rivalries but they developed in real time. The best of the last decade has occurred in a (to-date) ten-fight rivalry between Juan Francisco Estrada, Roman Gonzalez, Sriksaket Sor Rungvisai, and Carlos Cuadras.

The first fight between them, Gonzalez-Estrada, took place in 2012. Eight of them have taken place since September 2016 and it wasn’t really a fully realized foursome until 2018. When the first fight took place at Jr. flyweight, it would have been impossible to predict what would happen two divisions higher half a decade later.

It’s not impossible to pick out the brightest shining young lights around lightweight right now, but we don’t know what we don’t know about the finish line.

Maybe everyone has the right four picked out.

Maybe Lomachenko defeats Lopez in a rematch to reset the game board for at least a little while.

Or maybe a decade from now, we will all have been treated to a sensational six.

Not knowing is part of the fun.

Chris Colbert expecting to beat up and dominate Tugstsogt Nyambayar

Image

With junior lightweight Chris Colbert set to take on the rugged Tugstsogt Nyambayar this weekend in Showtime main event airing live from Carson, CA, Colbert discussed his expectations for the bout during their final press conference. Needless to say, the ultra-confident Colbert isn’t expecting to do anything less than put on a show for the crowd en-route to what he expects to be a dominant performance. Check out some excerpts of what Colbert had to say below.

Chris Colbert

"I was going to knock [Yuriorkis] Gamboa out cold, and now ‘King Tug’ has to take the knockout.

“My hard work is finally paying off. All I have to do is stay focused, dedicated, and disciplined, and then I’ll be the face of boxing in a couple of years.

“This venue is really known for wars. Come Saturday night I’m definitely going to bring the heat.

“I’m ready for this fight. Nyambayar knows he’s in for trouble on Saturday. Nobody out there can take a fight with me on a week-and-half notice and not be in for trouble.

“Me and Michel Rivera got a lot of rounds in together during training down in Miami. We did a great job all camp and I’m just ready and excited to get in the ring.

“I’ve been knocking out everyone they put in front me. They still don’t give me the respect I deserve yet. I just have to keep doing my thing on Saturday night and embarrass him.

“I can’t tell you if he’s my toughest opponent yet. I know that he’s not beating me, and that’s a promise. There’s no way a 126-pounder will come up in weight and beat me.

“He’s a fighter with only one loss, he can come back from that. But it’s not going to matter on Saturday night. He’s supposed to be confident in himself. He can’t say he’s going to get washed Saturday, but that’s what is going to happen.

“I appreciate ‘Tug’ for taking the fight, but Saturday night I’m going to get in there, dominate and beat him up. This is a Nissan vs. a Lamborghini, and I’m the Lambo.

“I agree that ‘King Tug’ might be better opposition than Yuriorkis Gamboa would have been. But it doesn’t matter if it was Gamboa, ‘King Tug’, or Arnold Schwarzenegger in there with me, it was always going to be the same outcome on Saturday night.

“My hair is orange this week as a dedication to the cause of fighting Multiple sclerosis. One of my friends, Dave, back in New Jersey has it and he told me his story of how he was paralyzed as a kid and also had MS. Then I saw him on the Stairmaster in the gym the next day for like an hour. I saw that and realized there’s no excuses I can make for not being in the gym. I do the different hair colors to make people feel special. I want them to know that I’m fighting for them.

“Nobody in the 130-pound division can beat me. I’m going to continue to prove that every time I step into the ring. I’m going to deliver a dominating performance. Don’t be surprised when I stop him.

“I don’t think this is going past 10 rounds. I’m going to keep proving that I have power on Saturday night. I’m not discrediting his skills, but I’m just different.”

BLH Predictions

Scott Christ (40-12-2)

I would like to pick Tug here, because he’s a fighter I’ve enjoyed since he was winning silver for Mongolia at London 2012, and because it’s a good story if he wins — a guy taking a really good fight on about two weeks’ notice, and the opponent accepting a tougher matchup than he had originally.

But Tug’s inconsistency in fights makes it hard to go with him. We’ve seen it in each of his last three fights. Claudio Marrero hung around but Tug won, then Gary Russell Jr was too sharp for Tug’s lapses to overcome, then Tug let Cobia Breedy hang around and have an argument for a win. Colbert projects arrogance but doesn’t fight silly or dumb, once the bell rings he’s on, and he and his team are showing real confidence accepting this fight. I think Nyambayar can win this fight — if he has a consistent attack and doesn’t have the lulls we’ve seen him go through repeatedly now. But that’s asking Tug to be different than he’s been. Colbert can win this fight by doing what we’ve seen him do in his last couple wins. Gotta go with Colbert. Colbert UD-12

Wil Esco (43-9-2)

I’ll be the first to admit I’ve underrated the skill set of Chris Colbert even though I’ve been aware of him ever since he was featured on a Netflix documentary some years back. Colbert actually has a pretty slick style which he’s both able to effectively lead and counter from. Going against a fighter like Nyambayar I think that’s going to be a big difference maker because despite Nyambayar packing a pretty good punch, Colbert is going to be a tough target for him. More than that I don’t think Nyambayar has the dynamic footwork to really confound Colbert or keep him from scoring for any real length of time. Unless Nyambayar is able to land a fight-ending shot I think Colbert should be able to pretty comfortably outpoint him while moving backwards to take a win on the cards. Colbert UD-12

Patrick L. Stumberg (42-10-2)

I just don’t get Nyambayar. When “King Tug” pushes the pace and punishes the body, his combination of grit and technical acumen makes him a terror, but we’re now at three consecutive fights where he didn’t do that. While struggling to corral Gary Russell Jr isn’t an issue, it was bizarre to see him let Cobia Breedy back into the fight through sheer inactivity, and that’s unacceptable against a technician of Colbert’s caliber.

Two things have to happen for Nyambayar to win this: he has to actually fight to his strength and Colbert has to be as willing to chill against the ropes as he was against Jaime Arboleda, when he was seemingly trying to prove a point. If one or the other fails to materialize, Colbert’s too sharp for Nyambayar to play at being an outfighter. “Primetime” makes the most of his reach advantage, picking Nyambayar off at range to take a comfortable decision. Colbert UD-12

And the staff winner is...

Colbert: No Way I'm Losing To Nyambayar, It's Impossible

Chris Colbert didn’t take offense to a promise from his upcoming challenger, Tugstsogt 'King Tug' Nyambayar to “whoop your ass” on Saturday night.

He also doesn’t at all agree with it.

“He’s a fighter. He got one loss, that ain’t nothing. The one loss ain’t nothing. He can come back from that—but not Saturday night, that’s for sure,” Colbert promised during the final pre-fight press conference Thursday afternoon in the Hyatt Regency Ballroom in Los Angeles ahead of their fight this weekend. “What I’m saying is, he’s supposed to be confident in his self. He’s not supposed to come in here and say that he’s going to come in here and get washed, which is what’s going to happen.

“He look fat. Look at him. I’m used to seeing him look skinny. He look chubby. No way I’m losing to him. It’s impossible.”

Mongolia’s Nyambayar (12-1, 9 KOs) accepted the fight on two weeks’ notice, replacing an injured Yuriorkis Gamboa and moving up from featherweight to challenge for Colbert’s WBA interim lightweight title. The move helped salvage Saturday’s show, which airs live on Showtime from Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.

It’s just the second fight for Nyambayar since a 12-round loss to Gary Russell Jr. in his WBC featherweight title bid last February. The 2012 Olympic Silver medalist and former title challenger has since returned to the win column, scoring two knockdowns but also fighting through injuries to earn a split decision win over Cobia Breedy last September.

Brooklyn’s Colbert (15-0, 6 KOs) is a heavy betting favorite to make the second defense of his secondary version of the 130-pound crown, which he vows to do so in spectacular fashion.

“One thing for sure, two things for certain. I know damn well he ain’t beating me,” promises Colbert, who is coming off of an eleventh-round knockout of Jaime Arboleda last November. “Everyone talking about he’s a hard hitter. Michel Rivera is a hard hitter and I spar with these bigger guys.

“Ain’t no way one of these guys from 126 gonna come up and beat me. Ain’t no way I’m losing to him.”
