Sugar Ray's Golden Gloves

Post by zuru »

I thought I asked this before but didn't get a response. Does anyone remember this?
It featured amateur teams competing against each other from different States in each weight class.
Some good fighters, that a few made it semi big.
Shelton Leblanc,Roman George,Vincent Releford ,Jesse Benevidez, were a few that competed. I think it came on weekly on Friday or Saturday nights back in the 80s. I've never been able to find anything about it online.

What year where you born ?
Is it possible you may be mis-remembering it from so far back ?
I don't think I ever seen it.
if it was on tv in the late 1980's, so you think someone would have taped it off of television at least with even a rented VCR.
maybe you arer thinking of the series THE CONTENDER back in 2007 ?

I cant lie my memory is getting dodgy. But I am sure it was in the mid(?) 80's.
And im pretty sure SRL was a commentator.
I can't believe that nobody remembers it. There were many fighters on teams all over the USA. A heavyweight,Pisa Final comes to mind.A funny thing,I can't remember the commercial you posted haha.

Hopefully someone will remember.

I think whoever had written that commercial for the bags had probably originally had Mike Tyson in mind for it,
but he was probably "indisposed" then.

Sugar Ray's Golden Gloves started in 1982 or '83 by the NBC TV network. It was televised on Saturday afternoons.

Timmy Rabon vs Mickey Eskridge
Adam George vs Mark Willett
Roman George vs Davey Philpott
