Perhaps there’s a logical argument that GGG should remain on the safest path, whilst waiting patiently for his Canelo mega retirement payday (
and let’s face it, who’ll blame him, we’d all do the same thing if we were in his shoes), but I really can’t help disliking cherry-picking... even when old guys pretending to be the best do it!
“Pretending to be the best” comment sealed your fate as a biased observer with his usual tired agenda. Any “fan” of the sport THIS hard up about diminishing an epic Boxer like GGG and his body of work should and probably already has lost all of his integrity to comment on the warriors of this great sport.
In order for GGG to continue claiming ownership of his status as being considered (by the mainstream masses) as the very best 160lb-er on the planet, he needs to prove it.
GGG also explained during his DAZN introduction press-conference that he wanted to compete in the "most important" and "most interesting" fights in boxing. He also said he no longer cared about the belts, partially because of "politics" and partly due to his belief that "sometimes the people with the belts aren't the best boxers."
I’ve quoted his words verbatim.
I'm not sure how you've interpreted GGG's comments, but Gennadiy's fights on DAZN against Derevyanchenko, Szeremeta and Rolls certainly don't reflect those objectives.
I understand the reasons why he’s being risk averse, but doing so also undermines his
CURRENT status in the sport.
In my mind, GGG is a dead-cert first-ballot future Hall-of-Famer, and nothing can change that, but he is no longer the best middleweight on the planet.
And nor is he attempting to fulfil the promises he made when he signed-up with DAZN, because not only is he inactive, but he now almost exclusively competes in business bouts against mediocre opposition (as per four out of five fights spanning the last four years… with his next outing not taking place for another five months).
You can’t seriously pretend that what I’ve written isn’t true.
Time doesn’t stand still.
The pre-summer 2017 version of GGG no longer exists.
