Guillermo Rigondeaux-John Riel Casimero Set For August 14 On Showtime

John Riel Casimero will have to get through “The Jackal” to remain in position to fight “The Monster.”

Premier Boxing Champions and Showtime announced Thursday that Casimero will square off against Guillermo Rigondeaux in a bantamweight championship fight August 14. The Rigondeaux-Casimero clash, one of seven title fights PBC and Showtime revealed Thursday, will be the main event of a “Showtime Championship Boxing” broadcast from a venue to be determined.

The Philippines’ Casimero, 32, and Cuba’s Rigondeaux, 40, will fight for Casimero’s WBO 118-pound championship and Rigondeaux’s secondary WBA belt.

Casimero calls out Japanese star Naoya Inoue every chance he gets, but their fight has not been rescheduled. They were supposed to meet last April 25 at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, but that card was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Inoue (20-0, 17 KOs) is expected to make a mandatory defense of his IBF bantamweight title against another Filipino fighter, Michael Dasmarinas (30-2-1, 20 KOs), on June 19, probably in Las Vegas. The 28-year-old Inoue is recognized as the WBA’s legitimate champion in the 118-pound division as well.

Inoue is the WBA’s “super” champion, whereas Rigondeaux is that sanctioning organization’s “world” champion.

In Rigondeaux, the hard-hitting Casimero will encounter a highly skilled but aged champion who has lost only to three-division champion Vasiliy Lomachenko.

The left-handed Rigondeaux (20-1, 13 KOs, 1 NC) will end an 18-month layoff when he encounters Casimero (30-4, 21 KOs). Rigondeaux out-pointed Panama’s Liborio Solis (30-6-1, 14 KOs, 1 NC) by split decision in his most recent appearance, a 12-round title fight in February 2020 at PPL Center in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Casimero dominated Duke Micah in his most recent bout.

He dropped Ghana’s Micah (24-1, 19 KOs) in the second round on his way to a third-round technical knockout September 26 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. His victory over Micah marked Casimero’s first defense of the WBO bantamweight title he won by stopping South Africa’s Zolani Tete (28-4, 21 KOs) in the third round of their November 2019 bout in Birmingham, England.

Casimero, a three-division champion, has won six straight bouts by knockout since fellow Filipino Jonas Sultan (16-5, 10 KOs) defeated him by unanimous decision in their 12-rounder in September 2017 in Cebu City, Philippines.

Good fight this. Nice clash of styles..

Rigo may be shot, and the way he’s been fighting recently, more aggressive type approach, it may just be a good one.

John Riel Casimero is back to the opponent he planned on facing all along.

The August 14 edition of Showtime Championship Boxing has reset back to its originally announced headliner, as Casimero will defend his WBO bantamweight title versus former lineal junior featherweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. News of the bout was confirmed to BS.com by Sean Gibbons, president of Manny Pacquiao’s MP Promotions who handles Casimero’s career.

Rigondeaux (20-1, 13KOs) re-entered the mix after initially being replaced by four-division and reigning WBC bantamweight titlist Nonito Donaire, who has since withdrawn from the fight.

The development comes on the heels of allegations from Donaire and wife/manager/trainer Rachel Donaire of Casimero (30-4, 21KOs) not responding in time to alleged repeated requests to submit paperwork to enroll in random drug testing as conducted by Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA). The claims came days after it was reported that Donaire (41-6, 27KOs) would replace Miami’s Rigondeaux to create a true unification bout on August 14, marking Showtime’s first boxing telecast on the other side of the upcoming Tokyo Olympics.

Donaire officially entered the mix on June 19, three weeks after returning to the title stage following a fourth-round knockout of unbeaten WBC bantamweight titlist Nordine Oubaali (17-1, 12KOs). Just six days later, however, Donaire went public insisting that he was no longer going through with the fight. The declaration came following a recorded dispute with a member of Team Casimero over a series of misogynistic remarks directed at Rachel Donaire.

VADA confirmed that Casimero’s team was officially contacted by its office on the morning June 25, with paperwork for enrollment received early afternoon June 26. A little more than three hours after receipt of paperwork, VADA publicly acknowledged that both boxers were enrolled in the program.

Testing was suspended on June 27 upon the discovery that the bout was no longer officially scheduled.

Hope was held out for the WBC/WBO unification bout to proceed, only for Donaire issue a public statement to unequivocally state that he was not moving forward with the fight. The future Hall of Famer also spoke to changing the culture in the sport, taking a stand against misogyny and other level of disrespect that blatantly crossed the line of general trash talk.

The good news was that Rigondeaux was always on board to take the fight and is once again back on the schedule rather than settling for an undercard spot. The Cuban southpaw brings to the table a secondary version of the WBA title which he claimed in a 12-round win over Liborio Solis last February in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Casimero attempts the second defense of the title he claimed in a third-round knockout of Zolani Tete in November 2019. His lone ring appearance since then came last September, when he stopped previously unbeaten Duke Micah inside of three rounds as part of a Showtime Pay-Per-View event.

The title defense versus Micah came five months after he saw a three-belt unification versus WBA/IBF titlist Naoya Inoue (21-0, 18KOs) fall through. The two were due to collide last April, only for the coronavirus pandemic to cancel those plans.

Very intriguing fight. Rigo may have a couple good ones left in him and looks to play spoiler. Great clash of styles. I’ll be getting excited for this one. :box:

What a lineup for PBC on showtime. Well done. Fulton vs Figueroa has fight of the year potential. So does Charlo vs Castano.

Casimero Promoter: Rigondeaux is The Tougher Fight, He Beat Donaire

Manny Pacquiao Promotions President Sean Gibbons, who promotes WBO bantamweight world champion John Riel Casimero, believes his fighter is taking on a tougher task when he faces two-time Olympic gold medal winner Guillermo Rigondeaux.

The two boxers will collide on August 14 in a Showtime televised main event from the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.

Casimero was originally scheduled to face Rigondeaux on the August date - but the contest was later shelved in favor of an all-Filipino unification between Casimero and WBC world champion Nonito Donaire.

However, there was an unexpected falling out between Casimero and Donaire - as the boxers and their respective team members were trading plenty of words on social media.

Eventually, Donaire announced his withdrawal after several insults were directed at his wife, who also doubles as the boxer's business manager.

“We jump on the sword and say there were some things that shouldn’t have been said. That’s boxing. We’re not in ballet, we’re in boxing," Gibbons told ESPN.

Once Donaire was officially out - the Cuban veteran was back in the fight.

Rigondeaux, although older at 40, has one defeat on his record - which took place in 2017 when he made a dangerous decision to move up by two full weight divisions to challenge Vasiliy Lomachenko at 130-pounds.

Among his notable wins, the Cuban stylist outboxed Donaire over twelve rounds in 2013 - when they collided in a super bantamweight unification.

Gibbons views the style of Rigondeaux as being the more difficult to overcome when compared to Donaire.

“I think we’re fighting the tougher fight, we’re fighting the guy who beat Donaire,” Gibbons said. “He’s only had one bad fight in his life and that was fighting a guy two divisions bigger than him, Vasiliy Lomachenko. Guillermo Rigondeaux … dude has a lot of life left in him. We’re taking on a very difficult challenge."

Press Release | Undercard Information

Two-division world champion Guillermo Rigondeaux will face bantamweight world champion John Riel Casimero for his WBO belt on Saturday, August 14, live on SHOWTIME, headlining a Premier Boxing Champions event from Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.

The SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast begins at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT and will also see rising unbeaten contender Antonio Russell face the toughest test of his career in former world champion Emmanuel Rodríguez as they vie for the WBA Interim Bantamweight Title in the co-main event.

Kicking off the telecast, former world champion Rau’shee Warren duels Damien Vázquez in a 10-round bantamweight bout.

TGB Promotions promote the event. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at AXS.com.

“Guillermo Rigondeaux is one of the most skilled fighters in all of boxing, and he will seek to add to his resume against the exciting three-division champion and reigning 118-pound titlist John Riel Casimero,” said Tom Brown, President of TGB Promotions.

“These are two fighters who have accomplished a lot in the sport, but each can elevate themselves to new heights with a victory on August 14. In the co-main event, Antonio Russell looks to announce himself as the next Russell brother in line for a world title, against the sturdiest test of his career in Emmanuel Rodríguez.

Opening up the night of bantamweight duels, Rau’shee Warren can step closer to regaining a bantamweight championship when he faces Damien Vázquez. These three fights will have huge implications on the future of the bantamweight division, which always provides great action for the fans.”

A longtime champion of the 122-pound division, Rigondeaux (20-1, 13 KOs) moved down in weight and captured a WBA bantamweight title against Liborio Solis in February 2020 SHOWTIME. Since turning professional in 2009 after one of the best amateur careers in history, Rigondeaux has showcased masterful technical skills that made him a unified super bantamweight world champion and a perennial member of the pound-for-pound list. A two-time Olympic gold medalist for his native Cuba, Rigondeaux made his name with victories over Nonito Donaire, Rico Ramos, and Joseph Agbeko.

“This is a big fight for my team and me because we have a chance to win that WBO title,” said Rigondeaux. “Fighting on SHOWTIME once again is going to be fun, and I’m grateful for the opportunity. Although I’ve been out of the ring for well over a year, I’m still in great shape and have plans to ruin Casimero’s dreams. I know he has much power, but he’s fighting a man with excellent boxing skills and a high ring IQ. I’m going to box circles around Casimero and show him what ‘El Chacal’ is all about. My trainer Ronnie Shields and I have been working on some new tricks, so don’t be surprised if I knock him out.”

The 32-year-old Casimero (30-4, 21 KOs) of Ormoc City, Leyte, Philippines, will make his second title defense this August 14 matchup. He has successfully defended it for the first time by knocking out Duke Micah in September 2020. Casimero trains in Las Vegas and originally won the title with an impressive third-round stoppage of Zolani Tete in November 2019. The three-division champion had previously captured titles at flyweight and light flyweight in a career that dates back to 2007. This will be his third career fight in the U.S. and his second at Dignity Health Sports Park.

“I am very excited to be back on SHOWTIME and fighting in Southern California where a lot of Filipino fans can come see me fight,” said Casimero. “I look forward to defending my title against Guillermo Rigondeaux. Rigondeaux is known to a lot of Filipino fans for beating my fellow countryman Nonito Donaire. I will show the boxing world how to beat Rigondeaux and send him into retirement once and for all.”

The middle brother between WBC Featherweight Champion Gary Jr. and 2016 U.S. Olympian Gary Antuanne, Antonio Russell (18-0, 12 KOs), announced his arrival amongst the bantamweight division contenders with a technical decision over former world champion Juan Carlos Payano in December 2020 on SHOWTIME. The 28-year-old from Capitol Heights, Md., turned pro in 2015 after an impressive amateur career. After four wins in 2019, Russell kicked off 2020, defeating Jesus Martinez in February.

“I’m very excited for this fight on August 14 on SHOWTIME,” said Russell. “I’ve put in the work, and I’m always ready to fight, no matter when the call comes. I’m so focused right now. Rodriguez is the only thing on my mind, and I’m ready to put on a show.”

The 28-year-old Rodríguez (19-2, 12 KOs) returns after dropping a controversial split decision to Reymart Gaballo last December on SHOWTIME. Fighting out of Manati, Puerto Rico, Rodríguez won the IBF Bantamweight World Title with a unanimous decision victory over Paul Butler in 2018 and successfully defended it against then-unbeaten Jason Moloney. Rodríguez went on to lose the title to unbeaten champion Naoya Inoue in their May 2019 title bout.

“I can’t wait to get back in the ring for this fight,” said Rodríguez. “Everyone knows what happened in my last fight against Gaballo. This time, I’m not leaving it up to the judges. I’m going for the knockout and a statement victory.”

Warren (18-3, 4 KOs) bounced back from a close decision loss in a world title fight against then-unbeaten former champion Nordine Oubaali in January 2019 by earning decisions over Gilberto Mendoza and Sharone Carter. A southpaw from Cincinnati, Ohio, Warren won the WBA Bantamweight World Championship with a majority decision over Juan Carlos Payano in 2016 and lost the title to Zhanat Zhakiyanov by the next year split-decision. The 34-year-old became the first three-time Olympic boxer from the U.S. when he qualified for consecutive Olympic teams in 2004, 2008, and 2012.

“Vázquez is not the type of fighter that can compete with me,” said Warren. “When they sent me the name, I looked at one of his fights, and 10 seconds was all I needed to see. I really want to face Rigondeaux, but I’m going to handle this, and I’m going to wait until I get who I want to get. I’ve been sparring with a lot of top amateurs, and that’s been keeping me sharp. They throw punches in bunches, and they’re keeping me on my toes heading into August 14.”

The 24-year-old southpaw Vázquez (15-2-1, 7 KOs) was born in Thornton, Colo. and now fights out of Las Vegas. The younger brother of former two-time champion Israel Vázquez most recently lost to super bantamweight champion Brandon Figueroa last September after scoring a stoppage win over Alejandro Moreno in February of 2020. Vázquez turned pro in 2013 and reeled off 14 consecutive wins to begin his career in the paid ranks.

“This is a great opportunity for me,” said Vázquez. “I turned pro at sixteen years old, so I took a much-needed break after the Brandon Figueroa fight. Now I’m back and more ready than ever. I’m back fighting at bantamweight, and that’s for sure the best weight for me going forward. I’m ready to show the world what I’m capable of. This is going to be a war. Warren is a world-class fighter, but if he thinks this is an easy fight, then he is totally mistaken, and I’ll prove it on August 14.”

Rigondeaux: I Plan To Ruin Casimero's Dreams, Don't Be Surprised if I Knock Him Out!

Two-division world champion Guillermo Rigondeaux has promised to put on a showcase when he challenges WBO bantamweight world champion John Riel Casimero.

The fight will take place on Saturday, August 14, from Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.

Last year, Rigondeaux (20-1, 13 KOs) moved down in weight and captured a WBA "regular" bantamweight title when faced Liborio Solis.

A two-time Olympic gold medal winner, Rigondeaux is looking to secure more gold in his new weight class.

A few weeks ago, Casimero was all set to face WBC champion Nonito Donaire in a unification clash.

But the fight fell apart when the fighters and their respective teams began to trade harsh words on social media.

Rigondeaux, who was originally scheduled to face Casimero, was very quick to reclaim his position in the Showtime televised main event.

He's very confident in his ability to outbox Casimero - and the Cuban stylist is not ruling out the possibility of a knockout win.

“This is a big fight for me and my team because we have a chance to win that WBO title,” said Rigondeaux.

“Fighting on Showtime once again is going to be fun and I’m grateful for the opportunity. Although I’ve been out of the ring for well over a year, I’m still in great shape and have plans to ruin Casimero’s dreams. I know he has a lot of power, but he’s fighting a man with excellent boxing skills and a high ring IQ.

WBO Won't Recognize Secondary WBA Title in Fight

The upcoming fight between John Riel Casimero and Guillermo Rigondeaux remains one of the most anticipated matchups of the summer.

What it won’t be, however, is a sanctioned unification match.

Casimero (30-4, 21KOs) and Rigondeaux (20-1, 13KOs) are due to collide August 14, live on Showtime from Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. The bout has been appropriately billed as a WBO bantamweight title fight, a belt which Casimero has held dating back to his third-round knockout of Zolani Tete in November 2019.

Rigondeaux—a Cuban southpaw based out of Miami—holds a secondary version of the WBA bantamweight title, which he claimed in a twelve-round win over Liborio Solis last February just prior to the pandemic. The belt has not been referenced in any press releases, although he is mentioned in those same distributions as a two-division champion.

That status has come into question, as three-division champion Naoya Inoue (21-0, 18KOs) currently holds the WBA “Super” bantamweight title. Sanctioning bodies generally do not recognize secondary titles from other organizations, a reminder the WBO has issued to all parties involved in Casimero-Rigondeaux.

“Please be advised that the WBO only recognizes Naoya Inoue as WBA Bantamweight Champion,” Francisco ‘Paco’ Valcarcel, longtime president of the WBO declared Wednesday evening. “WBO will never unify with Regular, Interim nor In Recess.”

Rigondeaux was originally announced to face Casimero this summer, only for those plans to change in the aftermath of Nonito Donaire (41-6, 27KOs) claiming the WBC bantamweight title in a fourth-round knockout of unbeaten titlist Nordine Oubaali. Three weeks later came an announcement that Casimero and Donaire were set to collide in a WBO/WBC title unification clash, one that both sanctioning bodies were ready to embrace.

No sooner were such plans revealed did the fight fall apart due to a variety of concerns from the Donaire side. Casimero revisited the original script, with Rigondeaux back on board for the fight.

The WBO is fine with the fight, as long as it is agreed that the only way Rigondeaux truly becomes a two-division titlist is by dethroning Casimero next month.

“We ONLY acknowledge [one] World Champion per weight division,” Valcarcel notes. “Waiting on Rigondeaux’ request to be classified accordingly.”

Despite the WBO’s hard stance on what should be a widely accepted rule, there have been past exceptions.

Ironically, Inoue was permitted to keep his WBA “World” bantamweight title entering his May 2019 showdown with Puerto Rico’s Emmanuel Rodriguez, who was an unbeaten IBF champ at the time. The bout came as part of the World Boxing Super Series (WBSS), with Inoue scoring a second-round knockout to win the IBF title while retain his secondary WBA title status. The unbeaten pound-for-pound entrant from Japan upgraded to WBA “Super” champion following a twelve-round decision over Donaire, who held the main title preceding their November 2019 WBSS final.

Most recently, Brandon Figueroa entered as the WBA “World” junior featherweight titlist ahead of his May 15 clash with WBC titlist Luis Nery. Figueroa won by seventh-round knockout and oddly claims unified title status in a division where Murodjon Akhmadaliev not only holds the WBA “Super” title but is also a true unified titlist as he also owns the IBF strap.

Figueroa’s WBA status could come into play in September, when he challenges WBO junior featherweight titlist Stephen Fulton. The bout can just as easily move forward as a WBC/WBO unification bout and allow for the situation to be the WBA’s problem.

“Rigondeaux, fight me,” Casimero said. “Don’t run. I want a fight. You know, because Rigondeaux runs. People who are watching are sleeping. All of the fights of Rigondeaux are no good. Always run, run, and all the fans are asleep. They’re tired of watching. This fight August 14th, maybe no run. You box, always you run.”

A stone-faced Rigondeaux never responded.

“It’s simple and plain,” Rigondeaux stated through a translator. “You do your job, I’ll do my thing. You do you, I’ll do me, and then we’ll see each other in the ring.”

it aint 2012 anymore
I thought you were quoting odds, although i should of relised that 12-2 ould be written as 6-1... but i was about to bet the house on ringo if he was paying 6-1....

But yes im also suprised how one sided the voting is, however voting can be like that sometimes, if 12 people think its a 60-40 fight rigos way, its the same as if 12 people think its a 90-10 rigos way...
