Stoppages are rarely because of gloves. In 1984 and 1988 Olympics were loads of fighters getting banged out….and they had head guards. Todd Foster even banged out the same Korean twice in one day LOL
Also the pure red or blue outfits really remove character from the fighters. I understand the red / blue logic, but surely they could allow the countries to have an individual strip, just keep the gloves red and blue.
Olympic boxing is so dry last few Olympics I can barely watch it.

Agree with everything you say. And it's a disgrace that the men have lost 4 weight divisions to let in the women. I mean no problem they added women, but they didn't have to remove 4 men's divisons. The AIBA are clueless. They've changed the game so many times over the recent years. Tried this, tried that..... none of which made the sport any better viewing or safer. The decision they make are as if they've never been involved in boxing. Remember when they took away the super heavyweight division? lol luckily this was brief and never affected the Olympics but WTF?JMac wrote: ↑25 Jul 2021, 15:00 In the old days before there was a cap on the total # of athletes, any country could enter a boxer in every weight class once they made their own Olympic team without going through the continental qualifiers. Some countries had boxers that were really inexperienced going against top boxers with way more experience hence the many stoppages. The continental qualifiers help to allow the better boxers to make it to the Olympics. Way back in 1990, I spent a month in the west African country of Niger preparing them for a dual match with Burkina Faso. Niger had 4 boxers that boxed in the '88 Olympics and they were all terrible and probably got blasted out in their first fight in Seoul.
As for the red and blue uniform....that was originally put in for the computer scoring. It helped the judges push the right button. Now they are back to 10 point must system and they don't need the red and blue uniforms anymore. They have the gloves and headgear. I agree that they should be able to go back to their country colors for their uniforms.
Overall, the Olympics are / have become a joke with all of these BS sports. Not that they are not hard to do but they don't belong in the Olympics. The IOC says they want to attract the younger crowd with these new sports. When I was young, I liked the old traditional sports just fine. I don't think they are attracting the younger crowd like they want and putting off the older crowd who can't watch boxing and wrestling without going online.
I get what you mean about the lower ability fighters but even in Seoul top guys were getting stopped. 4 out of 12 finals were won by stoppage. In the competition Bowe almost got stopped by Miroshnichenko, then did get stopped by Lewis. Mercer blasted everyone out. Golota got stopped. Lauren Boudouani got banged out. Giovanni Parisi stopped guys. As I said Todd Foster stopped the same guy twice in the same day I think. Lennox banged out decent Uli Kaden in a round... Andrew Maynard banged out some fighters. This is just off the top of my head.
Unfortunately the corrupt judges ruined everything by robbing Roy Jones and it caused such a stink it led to the awful computer scoring.

I get it - and good point - but they also must have changed the amateur gloves because in the old days used to be way more stoppages at every level in the amateurs. I think they must've changes the kind of gloves they use in amateurs. Great point.Cent0089 wrote: ↑25 Jul 2021, 16:19Stoppages are rarely because of gloves. Re: Tokyo olympics
The IOC is corrupt as is AIBA who the IOC said can not run these Olympics. They have a task force running it which is kind of a joke since it's still mostly the same people running things. The most obvious corruption started in '88 with Roy Jones so they went with the computer system which was a joke. There was just as much corruption in every Olympics since. I was a R/J in Beijing and in my after action report, I wrote that they need to get rid of the computer scoring system or take boxing out of the Olympics. As for removing men's weight classes, I agree that it sucks. I'm all for the women but what has happened is that the Olympics got so big and costly for a country to run so they put a cap on the # of athletes at 10,500. If a new sport is added, they are supposed to remove another one. So to add the women, they had to remove some of the men which sucks. I don't know the answer to that but watching some of these new sports like skate boarding and surfing.... wtf Watching the skate boarding is driving me crazy. Everybody is falling and they are like oh well no big deal...not looking like they are in the fregging Olympics. Surfing is depended on the waves and they are pretty small. Next week there is supposed to be a typhoon....maybe they'll get some real big ones then.JamesPhilips wrote: ↑25 Jul 2021, 18:55Agree with everything you say. Re: Tokyo olympics
As for the gloves, they have changed somewhat over the years. They used to use 8 oz and 10 oz and now it's 10 and 12 oz and the material in the glove is safer. I think the first foam gloves came around '92. Before that the material was horse hair which the old Reyes gloves were filed with that pros loved. They called them punchers gloves but both fighters were getting hit with them. The first gloves filled with foam was a 4 layer foam that was pretty safe but now it is a one layer foam that is a different kind of foam and much safer and helps eliminate KO's. Watching these Olympics, the ref's are not taking points and there is a lot of holding and punching in the back of the head which should not be allowed. Most of the boxing is in tight so that leads to the holding and wrestling. When boxers are moving and fighting from the outside is when they can land a long cross or a good hook off of a combo that puts the hurting on their opponent.

Great posts JMac and v interesting you were so involved in Beijing. I agree with the skateboard and surfing. Just a joke. And no need for Tennis or football as these are extensively covered in the normal deporting calendar. Don’t get me started on Sybchronised swimming or the number of swimming events - I mean all the strokes etc. It’s not like there are 4 different running styles are there? Just get from A to B as fast as poss (except that awful walking which needs to go too.)JMac wrote: ↑25 Jul 2021, 22:13 As for the gloves, they have changed somewhat over the years. Taekwondo needs to go too. A minority sport with little importance or following that was just added to the Seoul Olympics as it was a Korean sport.
But getting rid of 4 weights in one of the historical and most loved Olympic sports that was in the ORIGINAL Greek Olympics? Come on! BOILS MY BLOOD!
Re: Tokyo olympics
Actually i like adding new sports. They became more popular and level of competition will rise. I watch boxing, swimming, gymnastics, athletics and weighlifting. It is beauty of olympics, you can enjoy sports you like. But i also dont like reducing weightclasses in boxing. Is it true that AIBA added more classes again? Noticed 71, 75, 82 and 86 kilos division on some tournament. Also what im missing in olympics and world championships is bronze medal fight.

We’ve had our first big shock in the boxing at the Olympics.
Surging pro Ramla Ali lost every round and a unanimous decision to an aggressive Romanian opponent.

aiden walsh got an awesome draw, beating a cameroonian and now fighting a mauritius guy for a guaranteed medal
Re: Tokyo olympics
The Mauritius guy got a disputable dec over the Jordan one, whose aggressive style could have been more troublesome for Walsh.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑26 Jul 2021, 23:04 aiden walsh got an awesome draw, beating a cameroonian and now fighting a mauritius guy for a guaranteed medal

he looked decent, the other guy seemed pretty bad tbh. african boxers are generally pretty weak when it comes to the amateurs
id expect him to win his next fight too, he's in a good position for a medal

The majority of the Brits have tough draws though. A few Cubans in the way of medals.
Caroline Dubois had a good win earlier but is on the wrong side of the bracket. Faces a pretty good American next and has the prospect of the Irish lady that beat her in the European final in the semis.
Re: Tokyo olympics
Lol i have no problem score that fight for african. Walsh ran all 3 rounds, hugging and missing shots. Cameroonian got 2 points deducted but irishmen should lost points for holding.watsupdoc87 wrote: ↑27 Jul 2021, 00:43 Missed the Walsh fight by a few minutes unfortunately. Did he look good ?![]()

Pat McCormack looked pretty good in making the last 8. One more win needed for a medal but he’ll need to improve if he’s to get the gold.
Cheavon Clarke fighting at about 10.15am today - will be interesting to see how he gets on.

No - he is better. Plus the depth in competition isn’t as strong in his division. Luke McCormack is fighting the Cuban who we rarely beat in the Olympics and Keyshawn Davis is in his category too.Cent0089 wrote: ↑27 Jul 2021, 04:34Pat Mccormack is my favorite at 69. Cheavon Clarke just lost a close one against a good Brazilian. Clarke landed well to the body but the more conventional long range shots were being landed more by his opponent.
